    sir, i got a problem, i have a john deere 125a, and the last time we changed the belt, the belt that the site says i should use(gx20072) was too long, the friend who went to install it said it was too long, even with adjusting some part on the deck, is there some way to fix this?

    S107. I was raising and lowering the deck while I was washing under the deck with the hose attachment, to try and jar the grass loose. That's when my belt came off. Did this have something to do with my belt coming off? I bought the S170 new this past November. I haven't touched the covers or belts or pulleys. Thanks for your help.

      Thanks Joe! I don't recommend anything under a 130. I believe the S120 might still have the plastic transmission. If you have that, sell it! Then get a 130 or higher. As far as the decks I really dont know enough about differences of those two decks to give an informed opinion.

      @@Mechanical_Mind Thanks Troy. The S120 has the metal transmission. Seems a good machine. I converted it to regular oil system (not a fan of 30 sec oil change) and replaced front wheel bushings with bearings. I’ve just been curious if the Accel deck really cuts all that much better than the edge but can’t find much objective info. Looking forward to your future videos. Many thanks.

      @@joeholmes7622 Good deal on the transmission. They had so many of them break and had to replace them under warranty. I figured it wouldn't be long before they upgraded them. I have a E100 that has a loose belt. Found the brake spring for the pulley was rusty around the washer not allowing the tension to pull all the way back when the brake was coming off the pulley. Washer had pits and rust. Cleaner and greased and works perfect.

    The video that shows the PTO being engaged / disengaged while running.
    You can see how much extra slack the belt has when disengaged. It almost throws the belt off the engine pulley... as if the belt is too long. Mine actually does throw it. And.. like the one in the video, there is no adjustment on that cable that engages the tension pully.

    • @WalterKnox
      @WalterKnox Před rokem +1

      Yeah, I just got through putting a new belt on my friends mower. It is about 3 years old, and throws the belt off the engine pulley all the time. I have tried putting a shorter belt on, doesn't work as it is too short when engaged. The belt is the correct part #. It seems like a bad design. This mower replaced a Sabre that was from 1998, and never had any issues. I don't think it is going to last anywhere near as long.

      John Deere sells a retainer called a belt retainer for the Camshaft pulley. It mounts to the pulley its self and just makes the pulley extend higher and or lower. You can mount one on each side iof teh pulley if it comes off top and bottom. Most come off teh top. The retainer looks like a plastic bowl with a hole in it for the pulley shaft and two holes for it to mount to the actual pulley holes

    my belt keeps coming off the smaller pully with the metal black rise piece. I don't know if the pully is not being pulled enough or if the pully is too crooked it looks kind of angled on mine. Only main thing I did different is move through tougher weeds and it cause the blades to stop there was some heavy jerking. since that happened now belt keeps coming off

    • @jimjames1920

  • @sergiogomez6

    So flat side goes on the small pullys and the V side goes on the inside of the 3 larger pullies right? Also my issue is that the belt keeps coming off of the small Lillie everytime I engage the cutter’s to fast.

    • @Mechanical_Mind
      @Mechanical_Mind  Před rokem

      Other reasons could be a stretched/ worn belt, weak or damaged tensioner spring, belt guides might be loose missing or knocked out of place, bad idlers with worn bearings could be causing too much resistance also.

      Unighten nut more (25 ratchetts) and lift puley UP (off it's central support rod), squeeze belt between pulley and guide.

  • @daleedwards7940
    @daleedwards7940 Před 3 měsíci

    I don't really have either of those 2 issues. My issue (D140) is that the belt flips on the driveshaft pulley. If I catch it quickly enough I can flip it back. If I don't then it eventually flips throughout the pulley path and then frays and comes off. I probably replace the belt 3-4 times each season. This seems like poor design to me...not to mention frustrating given the cost of the mower.
    I'm going to try having my wife (yep - it's her ride) stop engaging/disengaging with the deck down and see if it helps.
    Any ideas?

    • @Mechanical_Mind
      @Mechanical_Mind  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi Dale, Im sure that is frustrating. Every time I've seen a deck belt get twisted the belt will continue to try to twist. But the question is why is the belt twisting in the first place.. What year is your D140? The models after 2022 had some repeating issues with the belts coming off. JD had several attempted "solutions" to this issue.

    • @e.s.8684
      @e.s.8684 Před měsícem +1

      Sorry to hear of your issues, but glad it's not just me. Mine constantly comes off and shreds belts the same amount. And the price of those belts with no fix/recall from JD is maddening! I have found what helps a little is to slowly disengage the mower belt and wait till it stops spinning to move forward or backward, it helps to keep the belt from slipping right away for a bit longer.

    So why is my E110 belt coming off with all the covers on?

    • @Mechanical_Mind
      @Mechanical_Mind  Před 10 měsíci +2

      First make sure the spindels and idlers can be easily turned by hand and do not feel rough from worn bearings. Also of your belt is worn and stretched its more likely to come off.
      Next check the belt guard that is around the crankshaft pulley. It needs to be very close to that pulley. Just enough gap that the belt can slip past. You may need to bend it back.
      Also check the belt guides around both idlers. There should NOT be enough room for the belt to slip past between the idlers and guides.
      Next thing is the tensioner arm could be bent too much. I will make a video on these topics soon.

  • @barryjohns1965
    @barryjohns1965 Před rokem +8

    That will not fix this mower. The belt was not put on wrong. These tractors flip the belt as is comes off. The black covers are one reason but the other reason is the poor design of that tractor, just like the E100. the only way to fix it is to buy the pully cups , or as some call them the belt retainer that mounts to the front pully using the holes in the pully its self. The price is 60.00 and you have to take the crankshaft pully off to mount it. Then and only then will the belt stay on unless you leave the deck at the highest level , Idle the motor half way down and then disengage the blades. If you leave the deck down and disengage the blades the belt will continue to come off unless you mount the pully cups on it by John Deere.

    • @Mechanical_Mind
      @Mechanical_Mind  Před rokem +2

      This video is showing just 2 common things I see. I never said "this is the only reason why the belts come off" The most common thing by far is that customers want to take the spindle covers off not realizing they are also belt guides for the spindles . The 2nd thing about the belt is only when customers try to change the belt themselves and they do not realize the belt is a V groove belt.
      There are many other reasons the belts can come off. Coming off the crank pulley is just one. JD has recently improved the crank pulley guide to the plastic parts you are talking about.
      The old ones did fine but if they got bent back or became loose the belt would come off. All it took was to secure the guide back close to the crank pulley and tighten the retainer bolt properly

    V belt and a flat pulley don't work! The pulley allows too much play and it throws the belt because it needs a flat belt. You have flat belt on modern cars and they don't have V belt pulleys. Pulleys or sheaves are way too big for the belt.
