    I can't understand why still in 2024 some people don't want to accept that the only way to gain fat/weight is via constant caloric surplus. After the Minneapolis Starvation study, in which every participant lost weight after going through an X amount of time on a caloric deficit (if not mistaken they basically only ate rice. But I could be wrong, I don't remember by heart now), it should be crystal clear that energy balance is King. But not, some people still prefer to continue believing in Santa. Thanks for the great work (as always) Layne.

      Not an expert here, but basically only available mechanism is that you were hypocaloric. So you ate less than you consumed. For many people it's easier to stay hypocaloric if they eat less carbs and more fats and protein. They feel more satiated for longer, so less cravings and less over all eating. Doesn't work for everyone, but probably worked well for you.

    • @Melesniannon
      @Melesniannon Před měsícem +1

      It was the same for me, and I always loathed counting calories. So when I heard about low-carb diets and the insulin model I thought, 'great, maybe this works'! and it did, I could eat until I was full, never felt hungry, and lost a lot of weight.
      It's a valid question to ask how this matches up with the caloric model, and the followup question also ought to be, "Well why'd I stop losing weight at some point?" I couldn't cut any more carbs realistically, so I was forced to count calories if I wanted to try to lose more weight (which I did since I was still a little heavy).
      That also gave me enough motivation to run the numbers on my previous diet and subsequent low-carb diet and I found I'd "accidentally" reduced my caloric intake by about 900-1000 calories per day. So yeah, no wonder I lost weight, and fast. If you run your own numbers you might find a similar deficit that you weren't even aware of, because it may not even feel like you're dieting.
      Also, apparently on a low-carb diet you lose quite some water that your body otherwise retains but I am unsure of the actual impact of that beyond your measurable body weight.

      @@MarcoPolo-vb1sw I'm a diabetes psychologist, not an endocrinologist, but I'll explain my understanding of it via discussions with my colleagues: In type 1 diabetes, the body doesn't produce insulin, so glucose can't enter cells to provide energy, leading to a buildup of glucose in the blood. Without insulin, the body starts breaking down fat and muscle for energy, resulting in weight loss. Additionally, because glucose can't be used for energy, the body may feel like it's starving, leading to increased hunger and further weight loss.

Build up some muscle and strength gains 6 months to a year and then when you are feeling alright with your training start a small calorie deficit. 300 to 500 reduction a day. This is only 2500kcal and within my budget but it would affect my sleep AND I wasn't getting that 'overnight' fasting affect (I'd sometimes still feel full in the morning!) because you're digestion slows right down at night. Then unfortunately de novo lipogenesis will kick in, assuming you go over expenditure. DNL is something animals like cows and pigs do very well and efficiently; and something humans, too, CAN do, but we just prefer not to. So if there is dietary fat available, that's preferred. However, if not, carbs are still not free calories, and they will be converted to body fat in this extreme scenario where there is zero fat coming. This would be quite exceptional, though.
      But yea. Calories in, calories out still can't be cheated. It's worth nothing that DNL itself does spend calories, so if your gross calories are 100 calories over your expenditure, your net calories may be less once it's all said and done.

    Your videos help us cut through the crap so well. I can't believe Diary of a CEO had this guy back on. I am done with their show, clearly they just want views at any cost.

    Gary worked in insurance years ago, so he's obviously a biochem expert. Isn't that how it works? You work in insurance so you know everything about how to the body works. Gary obviously thinks so.
    Seriously, this guy sounds like the Susan Powter of keto.

    Low carb diets still work easier and better for nearly all average people who have struggled to lose weight. Layne thinks people should give a shit about the biochemistry lesson behind everything.

    I struggle to understand why people follow Gary Brecka. How come no body he talks to asks about the studies he gets his information from? He never cites any. His followers just trust everything he says as if he’s a religious figure. Bizarre

    Meat, eggs, fruit, veggies, nuts and seeds. As much whole food as you can and shoot for at least .7 grams of protein per pound of body weight and 10% of your calories or less from saturated fats and your probably going to be the healthiest you can be... honestly though just eat real whole foods and your probably going to be good to go.
