Driver’s Eye View - Plus (Switzerland) - Part 2 - Furka Steam Railway - Furka Tunnel to Oberwald

- With the hard climb to the summit conquered, we arrived at Furka DFB station where our locomotive was serviced ready for the onward journey. Passengers had time to stretch their legs, grab a bite to eat or get something to drink before the Realp bound train pulled into the passing loop. Photographers took the opportunity to get that special photo of the two vintage trains set against the magnificent mountain scenery. We watched the Realp train depart before boarding our train to Gletsch and Oberwald. Peace and quiet descended on Furka Station after all the hustle and bustle caused by the need to service two trains. Our locomotive eased its train out of the passing loop as it headed towards the 1,858 metres (6,096 ft) long Furka Summit Tunnel. Soon we were engulfed in darkness with just the odd wisp of steam visible as we passed the occasional tunnel light. The light from the carriage windows danced on the tunnel’s rock walls, most windows had been shut to stop the smoke entering the carriage, a little over 5 minutes later, day light began to light up the tunnel walls before we burst into the bright sunshine for a short photo stop at Muttbach Belvédère. The scenery from here to Gletsch was breath taking as we passed the Rhône Glacier (Rhonegletscher) source of the Rhône River. At Gletsch our steam engine was replaced by a diesel locomotive for last leg of our journey through the deep Rhône river gorge to Oberwald.

Omigosh! When the steam turns to rain at 8:27 was incredible! Thanks for a great ride-along 😘
I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride and I'm glad they retained this part of the original Glacier Express route giving passengers the opportunity to experience Swiss narrow gauge travel as it used to be.
Hello Tim! Beautiful view of the Hotel Belvedere (Goldfinger - James Bond) and the Grimsel Pass road. This leads to Meiringen and Innertkirchen (Aaresprung). There's the next train right there. The sound of the vapor back pressure brake is unique 👍. Best regards from Hans and Cheers 🍻🇦🇹.
Hello Hans, this is one of the most fascinating railways I've ridden. The scenery is stunning and the railway's re-birth has so much in common with heritage lines in the UK. I'd love to drive the Grimsel Road Pass, all those twists and turns, it's no wonder the area was chosen for a James Bond Movie. The camera mounted on the front of the engine picks up some interesting noises. I'm glad you enjoyed the ride. Cheers 🍺. Tim.
Schönes Video - kenne das Gebiet sehr gut. Great video, all video on the Furka Railway. BRAVO & LIKE
Hello, I am pleased you enjoyed the Video. The views from the Furka Railway train are awesome 🙂
Prost. Tim.
Hi, I looked at your channel and I see that we enjoy the same things, travel and railways. It's nice to have a reason to go somewhere, I watched your Centovalli video, I really must go there one day. Cheers. Tim.
Well scenic and breath taking , a big thank you for sharing regards Trevor .
It was a railway I'd wanted to travel on for a long time and I wasn't disappointed, I'm glad you enjoyed the ride.
Both the first and second part of this journey was fantastic viewing but then the Swiss Alps seldom disappoint. Thanks Tim. 🤩👍💖
Hello Larissa, this is one of my all-time favourite journeys, awesome scenery, a beautifully turned out locomotive and friendly staff, it doesn't get any better 😊.

Thank you for your kind comment, it is really appreciated. Best wishes from Tim in the UK 😊.
@@Timsvideochannel1 You Are Welcome 🤗
Thanks For Good Response 🙏
What a beautiful view! This video shows how hard the downhill gradient is.😍
Thank you very much!
The second part of this trip from the Furka Summit Tunnel all the way to Oberwald shows how difficult the line must have been to work in winter, not only does the deep snow need to be cleared from the tracks, the locomotives also have to tackle some fierce gradients to reach the Summit, especially between Gletsch and Muttbach Belvédère 😊.
Enjoyed both parts of your video. In particular, I enjoyed the stunning and spectacular scenery of the Alps Mountains. I love your work and many thanks to your great work.
Awesome, thank you!
Running water and trains go very well together!
Wieder ein Video der Spitzenklasse! Vielen Dank!
That was awesome Tim, thankyou.
Cheers, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I've just spent a wonderful day at the Bluebell Railway's "Giants of Steam" gala and I see that the Amberley Chalk pits Museum has a narrow gauge railway event on Sunday. This is proving to be a busy weekend 😊
Another wonderful experience for your good self and viewers .
Hello Keith, train rides don't get much better than this one, awesome scenery, a beautifully turned out locomotive and friendly staff, you couldn't ask for more.
Super video , my friend
Thank you, it's good to know you enjoyed it 🙂.
Very nice video!
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.

Nothing beats a good old choo-choo. Would so love to do all the Swiss rail journeys
Switzerland is the place for unusual railways and steam ventures onto most routes with enthusiast specials.
Superb as usual, Tim. It's a pity your equipment let you down on the final leg. Not something you can just pop back and do next week!
Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I wish I could just pop back and shoot the ride again in the opposite direction away from the sun, maybe one day. The equipment doesn't often let me down, something went wrong, the files were there, sadly they were so badly corrupted, I couldn’t do anything with them.
This was a really enjoyable journey. You can see why they needed to re-route the Glacier Express to ensure that it was passable in Winter (will see that portion next month)
Hi, glad you enjoyed re-living this wonderful ride. I'm guessing you'll be travelling through the tunnel on your next adventure. I've just read the itinerary, it looks awesome.
👍👍

😊
27:00 That set of carriages was blocking the steam train's path to continue to Oberwald. The Lorirocks777 video showed a diesel-pulled train passing that shed to carry on toward Oberwald.
The diesel was parked next to the shed, once the steam locomotive had been removed the diesel was attached to the train for the onward journey to Oberwald, unfortunately the camera I mounted on the diesel failed.
@@Timsvideochannel1 Bummer! That happens sometimes. When you think your camera is recording something, you check the contents of the SD card later and find it didn't record at all, I've struck that type of failure.
@@neilforbes416 It's disappointing when it happens, especially when the reason isn't obvious.
@@Timsvideochannel1 It's also frustrating. The sequence I was trying to record was an interview with a lady who was part of the organisation that managed the community housing complex, of which I am a resident. As it was, I teed up a replacement session to redo the interview as part of a video which is on my General Videos channel.
@@neilforbes416You were fortunate to get a second go.
Fun fact: All natural waters from Furka tunnel ending through Reis river and Rein river with meet the North sea in Netherlands. All natural waters from Gleits end of the tunnel through Rhône river will meet the Mediterranean sea in Marseille France.
Reading the fun facts, it is amazing that rivers that start so close finish so far apart, in the USA they describe places like this as a divide where rivers starting either side of a mountain range flow into different oceans on opposite coasts.
Did you have to open the windows immediately after the tunnel ? either way the scenery was awesome ! cheers . 😷😷😷
As soon as we left the tunnel people opened the windows to lean out and take photographs, the scenery was breath taking 😊.
Bom dia e obrigado pela carona assisto vc do Recife Brasil
Obrigado, fico feliz que tenha gostado do passeio. Felicidades da Inglaterra.
Good stuff. Muttbach Belvedere 'station' is as about as rudimentary as it gets.
I'm pleased you enjoyed it, Muttbach Belvédère was little more than a passing loop, I don't think there was even a name board.

Bem-vindo a bordo do Trem Ferroviário a Vapor Furka 🙂.
What is that little tunnel entrance at 31:51?
Hi, did you mean the tunnel entrance at 28:51 ? I believe it is an outlet for a hydro-electric power station, but I could be wrong.
@@Timsvideochannel1 It's at both time points. And yes, turns out the Rhone-Oberwald hydroelectric power plant is under here. The actual plant is down in the valley, so this may be an access tunnel?
@@charlesolson9019 You could well be right about the tunnel, Swiss engineering blends in so well with its surroundings; it doesn't stand out like a sore thumb.
1:54 This is one *bloody long tunnel!* I saw it earlier in a Lorirocks777 video.
I hope the tunnel in both my video and the Lorirocks777 video is the same length, if not, one of your legendary ghosts must be to blame.
@@Timsvideochannel1 It's the same tunnel! And I'll have to give the ghost a right-serious *spooking-to!* LOL😁
@@neilforbes416 It will soon be Halloween, I bet you are looking forward to it, will you be shooting a spooky special effect video?
@@Timsvideochannel1 Well, not really. But on occasion, in my "Piece-To-Camera" sequences, I do like to appear and disappear like a ghost, for a bit of fun.
@@neilforbes416 I've seen you do that a few times 😊.
