    The newspaper trick is a game-changer. Thanks so much. I had some newsprint from a package and was able to lift off a lot of wrong, tired paint and will begin again on it without wasting the background. Brilliant!

    Never saw this way of correcting....very, very helpful. I have never been able to do a second portrait that really measures up to the first, always better to correct...now I have a more controlled way of doing it. Thank you!

    WOW! That newspaper trick is amazing! also that mirror one, I shall definitely use it should I have to, have taken photo's of my attempts in the past, and have always seen more clearly what's not right about the painting, by trial and error I get there, yet I know deep in my heart I have such a long way to go to get that portrait which I'll be satisfied with. I love watching you paint, it inspires, encourages and so educational to watch, this one turned out ( like all of yours I've seen, just marvelous, although it was not finished yet... I'm going to search for the follow up now :) ) I'm so happy to follow your tips and instructions, and again thank you from a grateful heart
    .

    I draw squares on a canvas, I then photograph the ' squared canvas' on my ipad, i take a photo of the photograph I'm copying, then in photoshop i layer the photo of the ' squared ' canvas on top of the photo I'm painting and then fade the ' squared' canvas photo over of the picture I'm about to paint, ...yep sounds complicated...but you should have a photo of the photo you are painting but with accurate squares matching the squares on your canvas, then just copy ....

    Thank you Ben. I am just starting to paint a portrait after a workshop. We used acrylics paints. Is it possible to get the same effect with them as with oils ? Also would water based oils be an alternative. I ask this as the drying time with oils can be a nuisance.

    • @lustenhouwer
      @lustenhouwer  Před 2 lety

      The water based oil is a good alternative for oil paint. Acrylic is different as it dries immediately. But you could add retarders

    That "newspaper trick" is probably the worst painting tip I ever heard. A lot of artists seem like nice people, but they really should not be teaching art.

    • @keithlarsen7557
      @keithlarsen7557 Před 4 lety

      He's taking excess paint off, but in a way that doesn't smudge it. I think its pretty smart. I don't understand how its the "worst painting tip" you ever heard. Now it won't work for acrylics, or finger paint.
