  • Woodturning: Turning Oak Burl Live Edge Bowl - The Badlands Bowl
I have 4 oak burls I cut in April 2020 - two small ones and two big ones. I’ve already turned the smallest one into the oak burl & resin spaghetti grain bowl Woodturning An Oak Burl with Resin and Crazy Spaghetti Swirl Grain • Woodturning An Oak Bur...
This is the other small one and my plan is to make a live edge bowl, assuming it will hold together. I AnchorSealed the cut edges and set it aside but there are a couple of good sized cracks I’m keeping an eye on.
I used a different finish on this project - Tried and True Wood Finishes Varnish, and I really like the look. It is easy to apply and works especially nice on wonky pieces that you can’t safely use a friction polish or wax on. It is also food safe, though that is not a consideration in this bowl!
We went to The Badlands and Theodore Roosevelt National Park in 2013 and the landscape out there is just fantastic. The gnarly, jagged edges of this bowl remind me of that place and makes me want to go 1 back!
