Welcome back, Constant Readers! Tonight, the Stephen King Book Club is comparing and contrasting the two villains from "The Ledge" (from Cat's Eye) and "Something to Tide You Over" (from CREEPSHOW).
One story takes place up high... and the other goes down into the depths... But there's a lot in common with these creepy tales of power and revenge... and my favorite part in each one is when the tide turns and each villain gets his comeuppance!
We also get a few lessons on how to be a terrible husband... Speaking of husbands, today's Book Club Question: Which STEPHEN KING husband character do you love to hate the most?

Unfortunately, there are quite a few terrible husbands in Stephen King's stories. But Norman, Rosie's husband from “Rose Madder” is at the top of my list.

I was just going to say to him. I just watched this episode. I loved this novel, and I really feel like it's just not really talked about.

The type of undead in "something to tide you over " are "revenants"... they return from the dead to kill their murderers.

    Very well done, man.
I think Cat'sEye is a bit of a hidden gem. It doesn't get the love that Creepshow gets because it's not as stylized and scary.
Anyhow, I would say the husband from Dolores Claiborne, Joe St. George, is the ultimate piece of trash.

Deloris Clayborn's husband was the worst I think.

I wish King had left the situation a little more ambiguous and not made it so clear he never loved his wife. Kind of cheapened her decision to do the right thing.

Probably the biggest difference between the two stories is there's no supernatural element in "The Ledge", it's a story that could conceivably happen in real life. Whereas the hero in "Something To Tide You Over" actually has to come back from the dead to take revenge.

Of course Norman Daniels from Rose Madder springs up immediately! But similarly I feel for Tom Rogan - the husband of Bev Marsh from IT.

Of course jack torrance. He was evil before the hotel, that just brought his true self to the surface.

In the book, Jack was an alcoholic with an anger problem, not the out and out psycho like Jack Nicholson's character in the movie. Still not the best husband, but not what I would characterize as evil (or even irredeemable).😊

    • @lynshively5980
      @lynshively5980 Před 11 měsíci +3

Alcoholism brings it out it enhances what's beneath. The shinning was the first of kings books I read I was just a kid when it came out, read it then,. And that was the scariest book I had ever read, because I lived with alcoholics, the mean ones, like jack, and let me tell you if you can break a little kids arm and justify it you are evil, you are a monster. The end of the book just as the movie jack became what was truly inside of him. Ty tho for your response

Also, I would say that the short story "A Very Tight Place" from "Just After Sunset" falls into this category even though the antagonist is a shitty neighbor, not a jealous husband!!

Can’t remember the name, but he’s featured in Needful Things and he purchased a horse track tabletop game so he could bet on horses. He’s incredibly mean to his wife, part from killing her of course. But after that. Norman in Rose Madder absolutely!

I wondered if Richard did hold his breath long enough and tide set him free...would that have been it and not ever see Harry and Becky again?
We know what happened to Cressner so no use wondering what Norris would've done if he succeeded the ledge walk.
