My personal favorite character in the second is Soi-Fon and I personally like her better then Youruichi something in which my friends constantly clown me on.

I think there's something important to note about Soifon and Oomaida.
Soifon never actually *gives up* on him. She abuses him; she berates him, she insults him... but she never gives up on him. She keeps telling him what he should do. And Oomaida certainly isn't completely useless, for all his flaws. [In fact, considering he probably doesn't train much; he might even have some legitimate potential.] Soifon isn't apathetic towards Oomaida. She could easily just outright ignore him. But she dosen't.
I wonder if that's because she knows what being abandoned feels like and doesn't want to put her people through that
Omeda actually has bankai but it's not been used as evidence in the blood war where he received the pill but he gave it soi fon

@@YoungPhenix Eh the main thing holding her bankai back was the same thing as her shikai, she was never allowed to use it in a situation or against an opponent where it would be allowed to work. Its a writing issue.
@@shadenox8164 I mean true but conceptually her Bankai is dumb. Like give her a spear that she can throw that one taps you. It keeps the stabby motif AND it keeps her martial artist motif. Shit or give her a gun like a revolver or something if you're gonna go the long range route or a sniper rifle for the assassin angle. Like soooooo many other ideas and instead big dumb one shot canon...that doesn't even work.
I've always had a soft spot for Soifon because of the DS games. She was fun to play and her 2 step kill was great to mess around with (even if it was near impossible to actually hit and the match was usually over before you even got enough meter to do it twice).
I LOVE Soi-Fon. It’s a shame she gets little time to build more character but it also makes sense. From the start she was told she would be Yoruichis arms and legs, devoted herself to that fully, and like limbs cut off from the body truly had no purpose other than being an assassin. She had no room to grow until after the arrancar arc really. Her Bankai shows her childish side well, as a last resort lashing out nuke lol psychologically, people that bottle up emotions tend to be unable to control them that well, so her lashing out at others when she starts to be more in her feelings makes sense. I hope one day she gets that full maturity and we get a more refined bankai if the hell chapters become more of a thing. Omeda is just a G nothing more needs to be said!
I hate how so many idiots shit on soifon all because she hits her liutenant a few times and he deserves it every single time💀then they completely ignore the fact yourichi abandoned her and it affected her MAJORLY but somehow yourichi is everyone fav character 70%percent of those mfs just like the females who look good I doubt they payed attention to or even give af about yourichi and soi fon backstory then every one says all she do is lose like bruh what she took out Espada number 2 💀hachi did something yea but he still needed soi fon help to new age bleach fans can’t appreciate characters like you or me
Soi Fon’s always had a special place in my heart out of all the Bleach characters. Her character design is great and imo she has some of the best writing given to a female character. Heavily biased but she’s my type lol

In the PS2 game she had an insane insta kill mechanic, She’s been my favorite in bleach since then.
I wish Kubo would make more hand to hand combats in next arc. Which is why I like characters like Yoruichi, Soi Fong, Grimmjow, Gio Vega (the arrancar Soi Fong killed). Characters that punch and kick not only swing their swords.
My boy Ikkaku needs to shine too!
Kensei as well, he really deserves a good fight in which we see his hand to hand combar abilities
The 2nd Division is badass and Soifon makes it one of my favourites. Always had a soft spot for her and her character arc we see in the flashbacks.
Honestly, I think Soi Fon has always been one of the better designed characters in Bleach and I've come to like her more and more over the years. I've also always hoped we would have seen more from her.

kubo really dropped the ball with this division, we barely get to see them do anything outside of yoruichi and a bit in turn back the pendulum, which is a shame because theyre such a unique and interesting division
They're an 'unseen' division, but more than that, they are literally emblematic of the failures of Soul Society.. They're also responsible for pinpointing Rukia's location after Hiyosu saw her gigai on the broadcast of Don Kanonji's show in Karakura. The whole point of Omaeda and Soi Fon are meant to depict the failures of Soul Society, Omaeda embodying the gluttony and avarice of its nobles and Shinigami caste while Soi Fon is always in the shadow of the previous leader, Yoruichi. Yoruichi, who left the Soul Society due to the intense personal bond and convictions she had, something that Soi Fon found herself unable to do. Instead, Soi Fon is this weaker, immature lackey of Soul Society, towing the line and putting on the whole act of being this cold assassin despite that not being WHO she actually is. Soi Fon's entirely identity is compromised just as the second division has become when the Secret Remote Squad has fallen under the manipulations of Sosuke Aizen.
@@varsoonhks3211 thats an excellent breakdown and i agree with all of it. My complaint isnt about their characterization, however, i do wish soi fon was stronger. My issue is that the 2nd division were built up to be super unique and interesting and we barely got any interaction with them. As for the whole unseen thing, thats not really a good justification for not giving screentime to a division like the second division. Especially since it has ties to important characters such as the shihoin noble family, Yoruichi and Urahara. The 2nd division is purposefully distinct from every other division and yet we barely got to see WHY it was distinct. This is a common issue that kubo has in bleach, which is a story i still love btw. He establishes a really cool lore foundation for something and hints at greater stuff for it, but then doesnt really follow through.
@@arjunwali9885 The story isn't about them, though. Given what's built up and where the focus of the story actually is, I'd say we saw plenty in past and present. I really don't see it as a flaw that Kubo's world building is evocative--what needs to get delivered upon (Soul Society, Hueco Mundo, the Quincy) all does. Everything else is window dressing and is fun to think about but I don't need answers for what kind of toiler paper they use in the Rokungai.
Never understood why fans and/ or consumers say a writer failed at something or "dropped the ball" when an entire world is established and there are a multitude of characters to cover. Clearly it won't be perfect and a handful of characters will be underwhelming. Better yet, how could kubo have done better? Thats what should be talked about in my opinion
@@varsoonhks3211 I guess I just wanted more from this division because I found them to be cool. Like we literally never even see them do an assassination aside from that fraccion soi fon killed or anything actually secretive in the present day. They just didn’t really meet the hype but that’s just my opinion
I find the different command styles of Yoruichi and Soifon quite interesting. Yoruichi extolled a relaxed and lighthearted atmosphere while generally ignoring the strict rules and even preventing suicides for failure among the operatives. This is a contrast to Soifon's who's brutal discipline made them stiff and easy to read. This was best seen when Yoruichi knocked out most of them when confronting Soifon while rescuing Rukia.
I actually think Soi Fon and Omaeda have such a unique and underplayed relationship. You can tell they clearly care for one another
They sure represent the dark side of Gotei 13 being involved in the sinister arts of assassination both against Hollows but also against dissidents for sure. The classified nature of their work leaves an element of fridge horror while their strict discipline and training works into their role and the implications of suicide for failure gives them a bleak and tragic element, even if sympathy is not warranted for such assassins. I just find it interesting how Yoruichi and Soifon's command styles differed radically with Yoruichi being a sort of mother looking out for her operatives while it was the opposite for Soifon. It sure showed.
I still wish the Kido Corps had been folded into one of the squads after Turn Back the Pendulum just like the stealth force. I think it would have made one of the lesser know divisions much more interesting.

@@akil6550 5th is not kido. It doesn't really have any notable specialties and apparently focuses on making well rounded shinigami. I'm not sure where you got the idea they specialised in kido but its not mentioned anywhere I can find.
Also yeah merging Kido Corp with the 4th seems like a poor idea given they're already focused on kaido, and are aimed away from combat roles. You'd want a division that would be willing to use offensive kido for that.
Head Canon - One other person I think is also from 2nd Division is Senjumaru... Based on
- How fast and stealthy she is...
- Her Cloacking technique is used by both Yoruichi & Urahara
- Stoic personality (remind me of Soi-Fon a lot)
- She is in charge of security before joining Squad 0
- The Footsoldier she commands in Squad 0 really remind me of Onmitsu Kido soldier
Senjumaru makes no sense to me, at least timeline wise. As I remember it in the pendulum arc Kirio was just promoted and she was the last member but Senjumaru clearly knows Mayuri who was in the nest of maggots before kiskue and she talks about the research and development institute as if she was tiene, but she couldnt cause Kiskue created it and if she knew Mayuri from the nest it algo makes no sense cause Youruichi was the first to merge the onmitsukido with the 2nd division

I always say the Onmitsukido as a sort of "secret police" - the KGB of Soul Society. They served the Central 46 (who in turn served the Noble Houses) even when this conflicted with the Gotei 13. There are a couple things regarding Squad 2 that I always wondered about. What was their role in the Gotei 13 prior to Yorouichi essentially merging them with the Onmitsukido, and how was Yorouichi even eligible to become Captain of one of the 13 Court Guard Squads when she was already head of the Onmitsukido? Isn't that a conflict of interest (and does she get two paychecks)? Does that imply that the Captain of the Kido Corps might also become a Squad Captain?
the gotei 13 serve central 46 too though as a separate branch and yorouichi wasnt the first to combine the two and is from one of the 5/4 noble families in charge, really what I imagine is just that they subject themselves to the captain commander a little more than they were, as we see him order the head of the separate kido kore around during turn back the pendulum even not being a captain or in the gotei 13
I haven't even watched bleach before but two weeks after discovering your channel and watching a lot of your videos, you have inspired me to not only give this series a chance but to also find a new show that I really enjoy. Thank you very much for all of your hard work both over the years as well as today, I can't put into words how much it is appreciated by not only me but the bleach community as a whole. I’ve always thought the second division was going to show us some more “underground” work of the seireitei as an assasination division specially in the TYBW arc
Soifon is one of my top favorite Bleach waifus along Rukia, Orihime, Yoruichi, Harribel and Nel.
the funny thing is soi fon is the one who ordered the renovation of the second division to include the automatic doors and heated floors after the soul society arc(aka she did it for yoruichi)
I really appreciate you doing this video about the 2nd Division and about my favorite characters Soi-Fon and Yoruichi. Several of folks dislike/hate her because of her personality and attitude, not to mention the way she treats Omaeda and her continued grudge against Urahara because in her mind, he took Yoruichi from her. I’m sure in the Soul Society arc after Soi-Fon broke down in tears asking Yoruichi “Why didn’t you take me with you?”, I think Yoruichi must’ve explained everything to her off screen of why she did what she did and so on. It honestly wouldn’t have done Kubo harm if he showed Soi-Fon and Yoruichi interacting with each other after their battle. That to me would’ve been satisfying. I wish that one day Soi-Fon activates her Bankai, she literally obliterates an opponent for once. Almost forgot, Soi-Fon is waifu by the way.
I feel like we get some hints that Oomaida, to some extent, was playing up the incompetent spoiled noble role as a way to get people to underestimate him, which is actually very fitting for a member of a stealth force. Obviously he doesn't take things as seriously as his captain would prefer, but I still feel like that aspect tends to get overlooked when that character is discussed. Sometimes misdirection is a good strategy

Has anyone ever noticed that squad 2 is similar to the marines i one piece? Specifically in the way that they have a front image but act on orders from the supreme authority behind the scenes
I've always been fascinated by the unique role of the second division - very fitting you published this now as myself and my partner have are watching bleach (a rewatch for me, first watch for him), and we just finished Yoruichi and Soi-Feng's fight

I know you mentioned it briefly, but I always thought that Shunko was one of the coolest techniques revealed in Bleach. Combining spell casting and hand-to-hand combat? The fact that it was pretty much exclusive to the 2nd Division, and the fact that it was independently invented by two different heads of the Division, shows the skills of its members.
Yep Shunko is great - it went missing from the series for ages before Yoruichi used it on Aizen, so it was nice to see a renewed focus on it in TYBW.
The 2nd division is my favorite division mostly because Soifon is my favorite captain. I hope the 2nd division and the Onmitsukidō are expanded upon in the hell arc if Kubo decides to continue it.

Hmm. On the point of Soi Fon embodying the ideals of the 2nd division, might it perhaps be that the division has adapted to her ideals instead? I mean, that is relatively common with long-reigning captains. The 11th division is a bunch of hooligans now, but that's because the last two Kenpachi. Kenpachi Kuruyashiki ran the division more like an actual military organization if I recall correctly.

My favorite 2nd Division character is Soi Fon with her mastery of advanced Hakuda and Shunpo techniques and expert kido knowledge. Though never stated, I always suspected Kensei Mugurruma was originally a 2nd Division member. If he was at any point, then he would be my favorite.
My favorite moment with the second division would be when lady Yuruichi and Sui Feng are fighting because Sui Feng thought that she abandon her and then the realization that that wasn't the case. And to see the reconciliation of the two Heavy Hitters.

I was hoping for a bit more of a deep dive on the Maggots Nest aspect of Division 2. They must be deeply involved in the Academy as well if they're picking the troublemakers out before they're genuinely a threat.

Omaeda Is the best character in squad 2. He carries the Captain and the squad. People underestimate him and that's his greatest strength.
I always wanted Oomeida to have a seriously overpowered bankai. Like a giant tank of armor that he can fight in for like 5 minutes and then he straight up falls asleep for like 24 hrs.
My biggest question has always been: Where is Yourichi's zanpaktou? She has one in "Turn Back The Pendulum" but then its gone...Some ppl claim that Soifon's zanpkatou is actually Yourichi's, but i havent seen any actual evidence of that being true...

That about Ōmaeda renovating the 2nd Division barracks I believe it's because Soi Fon ordered such rennovations to please Yoruichi whenever she visited, and all the expenses were paid, willing or not, by Ōmaeda
Squad 2 is criminally underutilized. You would think a squad that dose so many important things would get more to do in crisis situations. The TYBW was just a massive waste of potential for them. I was always hoping for a novel centered around squad 2 with Soi Fon and Omeada as the main focus trying take down a noble who is a powerful former squad 2 member leading around captain lv. Have it not just be a battle, but espionage as we see just how important squad 2 is to keeping the Gotai running preventing threats from the shadows. We can also see Soi Fon and Omeada in their proper elements considering they are the stealth force, but we never actually see them do that. Also would love to just see Soi Fon get a good solid fight where we can see just how skilled and powerful she actually is. Her match ups always put her at a ridiculous level of disadvantage. So have her fight a powerful opponent that challenges her, but not hard counter her to where she is forced to rely on her bankai as it’s the only effective move she can use to defeat her opponent.

To me the 2nd Div is more like your John Wicks of Soul Society, Combat Focused, but stealthly, jobs done before anyone even knows whats happening. And to me the 11th Div is more like your John Rambo's or your John Matrix / Harry Taskers, More in your face brute strength, either you or me attitude.

Bleach's second division suffered the same fate as Naruto's Anbu Black-Ops, they both had so much potential in the story and neither one ever did ANYTHING noteworthy or interesting. People try to rationalize it by saying "that's how it's supposed to be, we shouldn't see them or they wouldn't be good at their job" but that's not how storytelling works. But then again breaking the number one rule of storytelling, show don't tell, is the core pillar of anime.

As someone who experienced a shorter-than-intended haircut, I kinda see this pic as Soi Fon look disappointed by her new hair (that hair length is extremely difficult to shape you know, the hair grow to every direction it want when I just want them to be straight) and Yoruichi see her struggle and kinda humour her by showing her own hair

One thing I’ve always been confused about is that is the 2nd division call the stealth force now or the punishment force and is there a reason for the change.
To me, I always saw them as like, military police using special forces tactics.
Has bleach ever answered the question how big is the "world" the soul society is in? Like are there different continents I assume that one spot cannot hold the earth's population of souls.

Omaeda could have been so much better if he wasn’t so goofy. The idea him him being intelligent enough to take advantage of his size and the element of surprise would’ve worked so well. As well his dynamic would work well with Soi Fon if he was more dependable especially with her bankai in mind.

Who's YOUR favorite member of the 2nd division MrTommo? For me, Soi Fon. Her dedication to the Gotei 13 as well as her unrequited love for Yoruichi. I mean...who doesn't love Yoruichi. I wish she had more badass moments for sure.
I wonder if Omaeda is the lieutenant because Soi Fon sees some kind of advantage to having someone so opposite to her? Certainly you can't just buy your way into the squad because your dad was in it, right?

I've really come around on Omaeda. When I was younger, I didn't like him because his was this ugly coward that seemingly went against everything the division stood for.
Now I love that guy because he's an asshole who embodies the worst of Soul Society. Omaeda's an idiot who shouldn't be allowed to wield the power he has, is absolutely consumed by avarice and the riches afforded to him by right of his birth alone, and often hides behind using the others to fight his battles for him. We get a shred of his humanity in his love for his sister, so much so that he'd abandon even the ethics of his division to save her. This all puts him in nice juxtaposition to characters like Soi Fon or Byakuya, who have turned their backs on the personal connections they had with people for the 'sake of the Soul Society'. Where Soi Fon puts on this mature front despite being a stunted child and failure as a leader, Omaeda wears his personality very clearly on his sleeve, even if he is a total cretin. His position as the vice captain of the second division highlights both the nepotism present within the hierarchy as well as the ability for characters like him to wield such deadly power, although Omaeda often does so through less direct means. He is absolutely the kind of scoundrel who would never fight in a direct confrontation, which is why he's not a member of the eleventh, but of the second where his cockroach capabilities and resourcefulness can, perhaps, shine.
And I love that characters like this can be enduring parts of the series. Omaeda helps round out the cast, provides worldbuilding and texture to BLEACH that we don't get elsewhere, and almost always makes other characters look better when they're in the scene next to him. If anything, Soi Fon needs someone like Omaeda to help her feel more capable, mature, and confident when she truly isn't.
I have a question for you. Do you think the upcoming tybw anime adaption will have the incessant filler that later arcs of the anime had? Filler doesn’t seem to be as common in anime as it once was but I just can’t imagine bleach without filler lol.
I hope there are fillers especially on what happened at hueco mundo during the Quincy invasion in soul society

The Onmitsukidō always felt really underutilized in the franchise, I was expecting them to be jobbers/worf effect types like the ANBU from Naruto but we don't even seem to get that.
Like where were when Aizen went to the real Karakura town, overwhelmed by reiatsu?

He's done a video about it. Basically her sword becomes a whip made of acidic blood that melts her and her opponents.
It's nebulous what it does but it probably super heals people with an acid to the point that it dissolves them to the bone or causes hallucinations of death while healing.
