the powder they put onto fruits is called "asam boi"/salted dried sour plum.. some people like it especially with guava, pineapple... they made it into drinks too...
Glad that you tried the durian. Admittedly, not a high percentage of westerners will like it, but you've got to try it just in case you're one who does. For me, it was love at first bite. And the great thing is that when you burp later, you get to enjoy its flavor all over again. 🙂
hahaha great description! I think we will try it again in the future. Lots of recommendations in the comments for different kinds! When I first tried kimchi, I was not fond of it but after a few tries, I think I am addicted now. Maybe durian will be the same!
@@NewFoundLands if you're interested to try durian in some kind of cooking here in malaysia we have Tempoyak ikan patin. Its actually my fav traditional Malaysian kampung(village) dish serve with rice and sambal + cucumber. you should give it a try.. tips: google first the best place serve tempoyak ikan patin + how its look like . ( The durian taste also usually not strong ) 👌
@@NewFoundLands try patin tempoyak . It's durian used in some kind of Malaysian traditional village cooking. Taste good and one of my fav traditional dish to serve with rice + cucumber + sambal. Tips: google first the best place serve patin tempoyak and how does it looks like)
You should try durian at DurianBB Park. It's not that far from where you guys are. Get the tasting platter. They serve 5 different types of durian on it. 3 of them are black thorn, musang king, and XO if I'm not mistaken. Black thorn is the most expensive, musang king is the most popular, XO is the most favoured by everyone. The other 2 are seasonal. The platter should be around RM70~RM80. The prices there are slightly higher. I wouldn't recommend this place to people who want to EAT durian and get value for money, but it's the perfect place for 1st timers just because of the platter.
He's totally right, Jalan alor targets tourist they want to maximize their profit by selling you the most expensive Durian. The thing is about Musang King or Black thorn they are not really for beginners. The locals like it because has much more complex flavor. They tend to have bit of bitter taste. You should opt for the sweeter durians and they are also cheaper.
It definitely makes sense! Overall, we were really happy with the experience ☺️ I would like to try different durian in the future though
@@NewFoundLandsthere are much much sweeter and less or non-bitter varieties (depending on what the vendors have) that are much much more acceptable and pleasant than musang king😅
You can bring the snacks to the drink stalls and sit down to eat them. The owners won’t mind as long as you buy some drinks from them😊
12:59 the powder is dried sour plum powder and is usually used for guava, green apples, pineapple or jicama..that was why the vendor didn’t sprinkle it in the first place.. they have something similar in Hawaii called lihingmui powder
as long as they don't add sugar in it.
Yeah, doesn’t go well on watermelon😅 taste great on guava though
Awesome video! Very informative! Loved how Jeannie was not afraid to be the first to try the sticky rice and how confident Martin was in ordering his drink! They will be worldy children!
They will! They ate a lot this trip!
Good tips
Excellent video.try all the foods and visit everything you can. You guys are great tourist guides.
Thanks! 😃
How to check whether that durian is Musang king or not, u can check from the fruit itself. Check at the fruit bottom u shld see a big star ⭐️ pattern. Only musang king and black thorn has star on it bottom (black thorn is premium durian and ofc more expensive). Or if they already opened and sell it loose. Normally the fruit is creamy, bitter sweet, very yellowish and has very small seeds.
After reading some comments here (including this description) we are very confident it was in fact Musang King! I would love to try some other varieties but I am happy we started with this. Thank you for the info!
Common varieties :
XO
Red prawn
Musang king
Teka
Black thorn
Village durian
IOI
Go to durian BB park.
Thank you! I would love to try some different ones. It was a unique taste.
As many others have commented, there different varieties of durian. Musang king has a rich, complicated flavour that durian lovers seek; though it might not be suitable for beginners. If you go to the durian places recommended by other commenters you can have a look and choose the other varieties. I would recommend to start with D24 variety; it is a standardized variety delivering consistently mild sweet taste, fragrance and creamy texture that resembles more of custard than gooey snot. Durian kampung is a mixed bag of non standardized variety and their taste, smell and texture might greatly differ even by the same seller. If you are ready for more than talk to the seller and see what they recommend based on your preference ie sweeter, bitter, more complicated and layered taste etc. Most of all, enjoy!
This is such great advice! I will definitely try the D24 when I can. Thank you for this explanation!
Lots of great tips! The food looked delicious! Have a great week guys!
Thank you! You too!
The brown things is actually make for people who eat guava and it has MSG on it.
Lol, Martin and Jeannie look like they're cooked and listening to a lecture by Ferris Bueller's teacher.
hahahahahaha they are Newfoundlanders. They cannot handle the heat!
Haha yea this was the end of a long day for them
@@NewFoundLands Hahah!
That’s Incredibly Awesome And Delightful Foodie Adventure! Cheers!🥂❤️✨
Thanks so much!
Dont be suspicious, from what i can see from your video, what you are eating is definitely musang king. Durian lovers can almost tell from the seed after the first bite. Jalan Alor usually sell only the premium durians because their rental is expensive. There is a lot more places that sell musang king probably at half the price u paid. Anyway im glad you enjoyed it. Keep up the good video and thank you for promoting Malaysia.
This makes sense! Dominic agrees as well, thank you for clarifying. Thanks so much!
What a lovely life to lead
We are grateful!
Anyway, Jalan Alor is pretty expensive. Go to the night market. Ask people and there are many night markets everywhere in KL and PJ.
We will try one next time!
Try D11 and XO or Prawn and other durian.
The cheapest durians cost about MYR10 per kg (eg Durian Kampung). If you have limited space like in Jalan Alor (tourist attraction), why would you sell it? People sell the cheap varieties at/near wet markets or from their small trucks or vans or trunk of their cars 😄
This makes sense! We did enjoy the tourist-y Jalan Alor so I don't mind paying the extra. It was a good intro to durian for us!
You're giving me the Itch to do some traveling...lol.
Itchy feet!
I’m glad you guys are adventurous with food. I know so many people that eat McDonald’s when they travel. Why travel when you are scared to eat what the locals are eating. Now that I’ve said that! that doesn’t mean eat everything and at any food vendor. But I’m glad to see you guys enjoying your travels
To be fair, we did order MacDonald's a couple of times! I like seeing how each country does MacDonald's lol. The food in Malaysia was so good! There was so much diversity.
@@NewFoundLands I didn’t mean to sound like don’t eat there. I totally get it, sometimes it is fun to see what different kinds of foods are sold in McDonald in different countries. I was just saying my friends would only eat at McDonald’s cause they are scared to eat anything different
@GrowingLittleCountryhomestead I knew what you meant! People can definitely be like that! I find it really cool seeing what different toys the macdonalds have. It seems like in Asia they are training children to work at Macdonalds 😆 all the toys are something from that country Macdonalds. I should have taken pictures.
Best part about travel for me is the new food! But yea also not afraid to try out McDonald's here and there haha.-Dom
👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍
😄
Go to Kajang for Satay. Eat Nasi Lemak at Wan Jo in Kampong Bahru .
When we go back to Malaysia, we will be sure to do this!
You should try Black Thorn durian.. more expensive and better tasting than Musang King
I will keep an eye out for it next time
Go to SS2 for Durian.
💕💕
🥰
You may try Ramly burger, the stall at end over Jalan Alor 😂
I saw a ramly burger cart! It must have been there. It was closed when I was there.
Musang king has small seeds.
Good to know!
Congratulations on getting the authentic Musang King experience, coz that's the one variety to go for. If you get the other normal cheaper species, then you might not like it.😂😂
This was a good intro to durian! I have heard stories it can be quite strong.
Omg you ate musang king
lol a little bit anyway!
Jalan Alor is tourist trap area, most the vendor are not Malaysian... Kampung Baru, Jalan TAR, or Pantai Dalam much2 better & local 😁
It would be fun to visit another market with a local. I enjoyed being a tourist in Jalan Alor too though!
Try Malaysian food not other countries. Desert like Kuah Koci, Apam Balik, chendol and ABC and others. But you seem to eat very asian but not Malaysian. Rojak Raw and Rojak Mama.
We had so many options! I wonder if there are Malaysian food tours in KL. I need a local to help me when I'm out...
Aloor Food is incorrect. Alor Food is correct
Thank you! I edited the title.
Tourist spot... Not for local Malaysians...LOL
well, they are tourists 😄
That salty bit goes well on some other fruits like guava not on watermelon 😂the seller was abit stupid also to recommend that to you
She absolutely did not recommend it! We saw it and asked her for it. She was just doing what we asked.
Jalan Alor is for tourist. Locals dont go there to eat. Its not authentic Malaysian food there
I have heard that a few times. I would love to do a food tour with a local to try some more authentic food. I did enjoy Jalan Alor as a tourist, all the same!
I enjoyed the video. Good luck.🎉🎉
Thank you!
