This is astonishing... Not only is it one of the most beautiful tracks off of 'Space Oddity' but to hear it 'live' in this setting... is heavenly. I love the young Bowie of the late 60's heading into the 70's... Pre-'Ziggy' has an innocence & a gentleness & is all good!
She (Hermione) broke his heart, and David always carried a flame for her by the looks of it, but its a rites of passage for us when we are young as most will have a heartbreak or two in their formative years :(
@crumplezone1 Not True. Hermione did not leave David. It was about Linda Whitecross(a dancer in Lindsey Kemp's class) instead and about getting rid of his infatuation for her sort of like Help Me Rhonda song with "get her(Linda) out of my heart."
@@Nooke643 Its' actually Robin. Whitecross is mentioned in the book Bowie by Jerry Hopkins(p. 38 and 39) "David also attended classes once a week. There were about twenty students all of whom worked in pacing rows at first, and then David was paired with Robin Whitecross, a slender young woman from Portsmouth." Basically, David was infatuated with Robin but he really loved Hermione so the letter to is about getting over his infatuation over Robin while writing to Hermione. Also Help Me Rhonda by the Beach Boys("get her out of my heart") could be interpreted as David saying to Hermione to help him get over his infatuation over Robin.
You know, I learned this song on my guitar like six years ago and I play it everyday specially if I´m all by myself, I very rarely play it in front of other people, it´s the most magic Bowie love song for me and the most significant because of the lyrics. thanks for this absolutely, amazing version!!
I can't say how much David enriched my life over the last 40 years or so. This is among the many songs I've listed to over and over in the years since Space Oddity. I will always miss him.
I'll lie down on your pillow in the quiet dark It's been a long time but here we are We used to have so much to say What can we do And if we cried tears they're mostly dried But still when I read your lines I find it hard to catch my breath and by the way you're right to say It's not okay So now the dawn has reached this hidden bed He looks back at me with eyes of love Your kisses are just poetry on a yellow page And what's the use But please keep writing love to me
I prefer this demo version, and all the other Space Oddity songs as demos as they just sound so authentic. Really want to get this on vinyl for Christmas, would sound amazing. So raw and exposed, stripped down from the studio effects.
It's from a bootleg thats been knocking around for years on cassette, then cdr. It's now given the ubiquitous title "The Bedroom tapes, Home Recordings 1968". It has the earliest Space Oddity on it with John Hutchinson's vocal on the first verses.
The hand that wrote this letter Sweeps the pillow clean So rest your head and read a treasured dream I care for no one else but you I tear my soul to cease the pain I think maybe you feel the same What can we do? I'm not quite sure what we're supposed to do So I've been writing just for you They say your life is going very well I hear you sparkle like a different girl But something tells me that you hide When all the world is warm and tired You cry a little in the dark Well so do I I'm not quite sure what you're supposed to say But I can see it's not okay He makes you laugh He gives you every chance He treats you well And brings you out in style And when he's strong He's strong for you And when you kiss It's something new But did you ever call my name Just by mistake? I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to do So I'll just write some love to you
So many thanks for the post....it's wonderfull....full of emotion. This song, especially this version, brings tears to my eyes... He is a Genius...my Hero....my God....
I was given a sneak preview of Mark Stewart's new album the other week. There's a version of LetterTo Hermione on it, which is, quite frankly - wild!!!
This is a pretty song. On SPACE ODDITY album I found it charming and was pleased album included other songs I enjoyed. That was now decades ago. Wild Eyed Boy From Free Cloud was also a very arresting.
I read somewhere Hermione formerly Dennis left for Papua New Guinea and married a Doctor (1972), she lived in her flat in Kensington with David, her Dad was a lawyer so they were obv quite wealthy. She disappeared into obscurity, dont know if shes alive or dead
She left him to appear in the film/play "Song of Norway". She went to one of his shows in the 90's (after he was married to Iman). David found out she was there and invited her backstage - that is the only time they ever reconnected. In his video "where are we now" he wears a shirt that says "Song of Norway", very sad and moving song and video.
In the photo at 2.12, is that Patti Smith on the left, Bowie next to John Hutchinson or maybe Peter Frampton (Marmalade) who is also from Bromley, and Angie?
Cosa possiamo fare? Non so bene cosa dovremmo fare. Non so bene cosa dovrei fare.

I'm dying every time
So pure so naive ... this song is as beautiful as a first love.

what are the chords ? x
Such a beautiful and touching song. It shows David's innocence. Little did David know what was around the corner...
I can't say how much David enriched my life over the last 40 years or so. This is among the many songs I've listed to over and over in the years since Space Oddity. I will always miss him.
oh dear... I'm crying again...
Me too every time I hear his music.
David’s and John’s vocals were flippin astonishing together, man
I'll lie down on your pillow in the quiet dark
It's been a long time but here we are
We used to have so much to say
What can we do
And if we cried tears they're mostly dried
But still when I read your lines

Thank you David for giving us this wonderful Song.
RIP David. This was my favorite song of yours :'(
It makes the album version seem rushed! This is slower and even lovelier
That was so personal shit! i miss him!
I absolutely adore this tune ,so cool to be privy to this recording.
The hand that wrote this letter
Sweeps the pillow clean
So rest your head and read a treasured dream
I care for no one else but you
I tear my soul to cease the pain
I think maybe you feel the same
What can we do?
I'm not quite sure what we're supposed to do
So I've been writing just for you
They say your life is going very well
I hear you sparkle like a different girl
But something tells me that you hide
When all the world is warm and tired
You cry a little in the dark
Well so do I
I'm not quite sure what you're supposed to say
But I can see it's not okay
He makes you laugh
He gives you every chance
He treats you well
And brings you out in style
And when he's strong
He's strong for you
And when you kiss
It's something new
But did you ever call my name
Just by mistake?
I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to do
So I'll just write some love to you
È la canzone o la lettera questa?
"So I'll just write some love to you"
beatiful ;_;
This version is far and away the best rendition of this song.
I always find something new about this genius...
A true legend. A gifted soul. Thank you David.
This and "An Occasional Dream" are the two best songs on "Space Oddity".
Agreed!
And Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud!!
Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed
They are all great and this album is a masterpiece but I can understand why space oddity got most of the love in this album
my God David you are were a genious.
What an utterly beautiful mind. You are my hero Bowie X (I'll just write some love for you) x
I actually like this a lot more than the version on Space Oddity.
I have heard this song many many times in several versions but this one is IT!! It is sooo beautiful! Thank you so much for putting this up!
One of my Bowie favorites. This whole album 'Man of Words, Man of Music' got me hooked back in 69.
This song makes me cry.
this is seriously the best song ive ever heard
i only heard it 2weeks ago. i cant get enough. my exwife can lmao
the early stuff is still the best...
Beautiful version. Brought tears to my eyes.
A perfect love song
This song has always been succeed to shatter my heart
The best song David ever wrote and sang.
You are a total star for putting this up. I want to thank you. So, thank you.
What beautiful lyrics. I love this song.
One of his best songs for sure. Pretty certain that's Hutch singing the intro and outro. Amazing photos of a Feathers gig... thanks.

I liked the Space Oddity album as much as Ziggy.
It's great.
The best Lady Evol in db life with best Naive Friend - tv....
@woodsworkciew Hi, We left a note on your channel. Cheers.
Woa, seriously? Where did you hear that?
@kjchicago1 He Did.
bowie was probably in love with her...
Doodle your exam paper Definitely. He was very depressed after she disappeared.
yea i'm not too sure but i think he may have had a crush on her
This song has always messed me up since the record came out
@CultureJudge this was probably the end of the sixties for the mainman and definitely no indication of what was to come.
she blew her chance n I heard she passed away, sick and alone...
No, still breathing.
@minutegongcoughs This is a beautiful home recording by Mr. Bowie, don't you think so? BTW, who wrote this song?
I guess he wrote his own song himself, huh?
yea he'll never make it
