  • Today we look at one of my personal rifles. My 12.5" Intermediate distance rifle, some may call a "Mini recce" or a "SSPR" Short Special Purpose Rifle". This rifle in its current configuration, is kind of like a Swiss army knife, it can do a lot. As always, we will be filming at the Farm Training Center, then we will head back to the studio to give you a break down on the parts and go into a little more detail, thanks for watching. I built a 12.5 BCM 5.56 into an Aero Precision M4E1 upper + 12 inch MLOK rail, Bootleg adjustable BCG, 17 Design folding lower with their H2, and a Geissle flat 3 Gun trigger. SBA4, Magpul K2 grip and hand stop. I have a Dead Air flash hider for my Sandman S, a Streamlight ProTac HL-X using a Cloud Defense LCS MKII tape switch mount.
    I keep a Primary Arms FFP 1-6x ACSS LVPO on it. It hits.
    Last year I ran it at The GTI Tactical Games in South Carolina. It was awesome. Perfect length to reach out to 400+, short enough not to bang into your legs or the 220 pound farmer's carry weighted implements you need to move from A to B and back.

Didnt think going to a 12.5 would be much of a difference but hands done it will be my do all rifle. I built a LMT Specwar recently with the specwar 12.5 barrel as intended and dude… I have been running an 11.5 URGI clone build for the last year or two as my main shorty and the LMT was going to be a stripped down nightvision gun. It’s so damn good my poor URGI sits now lol. IT’s so accurate it’s insane. I mean my DD barreled 11.5 is no slouch but my instinct says it’s the velocity. I don’t have a crono but it seems to buck wind a lot better and is a laser beam. I love my 11.5 but the 12.5 really has won me over as a do all. It’s hard to justify grabbing my 14.5 now too even when going to a range with distance. I’m with you man, it’s a great length. Mines a middy too and it’s just so incredibly smooth. Direct threaded a Sierra 5 on it until it blew up and it was still super short. Great barrel length!

    12.5 triarc track barrel has been nice. 12.5 imo is the perfect combo for urban environments retains decent velocity. Can be used in many different scenarios not to bad with a can and is perfect for a fighting rifle in inner city. If i was in Montana or where big game is in abundance and distances can easily reach a 1000 and more id opt for an spr in 16-18 or a larger caliber. But for my part of where i live this would work for any thing you can think of in a realistic scenario one could find themselves in. Not to short not too long.

    Ive been playing around with the concept of running a 2.5-10 + 12oc dot on my Triarc 12.5 for a bit now, still need many more months of playing with it, but i honestly feel like i have found my happy place. After shooting 18" + Mk5 18x / 11.85" + Delta 1-6 for years, i feel like im giving up very little in either direction.
    While i still like the 18", i found most of the ability of that rifle was down to the vastly superior optic vs the 1-6 on the 11.85, and not so much the extra velocity. Adding the fact that as time progressed i found i ran my LPVO on 1x maaaaaaybe 10% of the time, i found the huge tradeoff in higher mag optical quality that you have to make for the 1x to not be worth it for my uses.
    If i thought i was the type of guy to ever look for close quarters fights, that calculus changes, but that aint me babe. That aint me. The dot will be sufficient, i think...
    Do still love LPVOs though, and the Delta 6x is one that is hugely underrated for the $. Need to replace my PLx 1-8 with the new one and see how that came out, should be really solid though.
    With the success ive been having with 6arc, i dont think im willing to give 5.56 more than 12.5" of barrel anymore.

    • @rdrgear
      @rdrgear  Před 2 lety +4

      Pin and weld and The NFA tax are 2 different things.
      1. The pin and weld : is the way someone makes a 14.5” or 13.9” rifle. Both lengths are considered SBR Short barreled rifles. By pinning specific muzzle devices to the existing rifle. The rifles over all length ends up being 16”. A full length rifle.
      SBR and the tax as unconstitutional as it is. Is in my opinion the best way. Once it’s you choose a barrel length. You form 1 lower receiver. And put together a rifle that best fits your needs.
      You can also run a pistol brace for as long as we have them.

    I see why you like to run your RMR on a offset but then again it would be much easier to aim with your RMR at a 12:00 if your LPVO mount wasn’t 5 feet tall 😂 all jokes aside it’s a great build.

      At the time of this video and my time On this 12.5 and running the 1.70-1.93 mounts I thought he was easier to run the off set 45. Since this video i have moved to the 12”o clock. With all Reddots. Some of the topics limit this so I have a mount review coming that will help some folks navigate this issue. Appreciate the comment and interaction Doc.

      @@rdrgear yeah 100%. I like the idea of running my LPVO’s at a lower level because I like my RMR’s and other red dots over my LPVO because it gives you another way to passively aim under night vision. Again tho great build, far better than mine.

      From Emmisary Development. Velox training had done some with the silicone carbide. They are awesome, the angle as the grip texture is spot on.

      What Steven said, just the new popular way instead of recon. People really just mean a general purpose/ light-weight handy rifle with magnification.

      Literally reconnaissance. It is an action. Therefore, any rufle used on a recon is a recon rifle.

    • @rdrgear
      @rdrgear  Před 2 lety +1

      Short for reconnaissance, recce rifles can really be a length that the user wants. Optics are usually LPVO but some use ACOGS or other fixed power optics.

      @@rdrgear I've got all the knowledge, but I just love the nicknames everyone comes up for their rifles. I'm not ridiculing you maliciously, I meant it all in jest. The gun industry loves these buzzwords. Guys were using these in '05 in Iraq, but they didn't say, "hey hand me my recce rifle." That's all, I think its comedic. You don't have to insult my intelligence though.

    It seems the word "recce" is the new "sniper." A recce rifle is any rifle you bring on reconnaissance just as a sniper rifle is whatever rifle a sniper uses. Mission drives the gear. A 12" AR is a sbr that excels at general purposes. Disliking this video lol
