  • Flower farmer and florist Georgie Newbery of Common Farm Flowers in Somerset, south west England makes some lovely calming foliage and flower arrangements for midwinter.
I totally get that Christmas can be over-rich fare for many people, so I thought I'd make a clip about just cool, white flowers, and why they work so well in the darker days of mid winter, with some lovely wintery twigs and foliage. I hope this clip will inspire some to head out into their gardens, scissors in hand, to see if they can rustle up enough for a #30stemchallenge.
Sometimes Christmas gets too much: too much rich food, expensive gifts, just plain noise! Many people take this time to spend time on their own, having a think, and enjoying time by themselves, or just with fewer, less, not so much...
This post is for all of us - the people who prefer less, and those of us, who, like me, like the whizz bang whoop of Christmas (and the brandy butter best of all!) but who will also love it when we get a moment of calm.
Right now I am on my own wrapping presents - brown paper packaging and the same bronze Petersham ribbon I used on the posies in this clip. I am secretly a person who loves lots of time on their own - that's why I like flower farming - I work mostly on my own! Fabrizio has spent the day making a church for the little town of Bethlehem we put up in the bookshelf (see previous clip!). For the moment the house is quiet and I'm wrapping my ears round the sound of nothing and hugging it.
Bon, whatever kind of Christmas you have, I hope you have a lovely time, with space for quiet, perhaps a walk, what my mother would call a blow through. And for those of you who prefer a quiet time in this noisy time of year, I hope you might make time for a wander round your garden with a pair of snips, and then make a foliage arrangement like this one, with or without flowers.
Peace and good will to all.
The foliage used in this mix is:
    brachyglottis
    magnolia grandiflora
    bay
    rosemary
    griselinia
    contorted willow

Because of you,, this beginner created three posies for our Christmas Eve family dinner table and a lovely welcome table bouquet--foraged evergreens, arctic willow stems, rosemary, star Jasmine, red artemesia and large white mums. Thank you and do enjoy your "coffee"! LOVE your channel and book, Flower Farmer's Year.

Magnolia Grandiflora flowers smell incredible! When I first came down here, we used to visit Rode Bird Garden and they had a massive one growing up the groundsman's house and I remember the smell vividly. 😊
Those flower arrangements are beautiful. 😊 ❤️

I think the scent of magnolia grandiflora flowers are better than any other scent - even that of broad bean blossom which is pretty amazing too x

Love this type of arrangement, your foliage choices and white flowers are the best. I live in a frozen state now (Minnesota, USA) so nothing even resembling green is available. I am going to start saying "curly whirly willow" this minute. Will I get it to root here this summer? I will try.

The magnolia Grandiflora in front of my house is 40 or 50 years old, and I could easily cut 35 stems from it alone. The city is going to cut it back because it's growing around the power lines. I do love the foliage and also the cute cones that fall from tree. Wish I could give you bundles!

Very nice, light and airy, love them! Thank you so much, what I've learned from you in the last year is that you can create arrangements from flowers and foliage in every season, it doesn't end with the end of summer or in late fall + I still find useful stuff in the garden even if I think there's nothing there 😆 It's amazing and I thank you for this new experience. Greetings from Slovakia 🙂

Beautiful as usual. I would be happy with your vase with only greenery. Love ❤️ the flowers too of course. Also 💕 the addition of bronze ribbon on the posies. It was 62 degrees with sunshine. I promise it doesn’t feel much like Christmas 🎄 eve when it’s that warm. It gets pretty cold at night though. Once again Georgie scores a blue ribbon.
Here’s wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Your friend in South Carolina.

Merry Christmas Eve eve! As always, loverly flaars and now I will make a mad dash to the local Morrison's to purchase a hurricane vase to replace the one I broke last Christmas. Can't wait to see the little church. Thank you for all the inspiration, cheerful chat, and good company. I hope all your Christmas wishes come true. X

‘Gardeny’ style i understand…but ‘celtic’? I’m very curious… who can elaborate on what that means

Celtic? Not sure I would have said Celtic in this context… classic?
