      I went to all his London concerts and recitals during that period save for the Emperor concerto all, save the Beethoven 3 with Tilson Thomas, were extraordinary. I also went to Bregenz and heard him do two Mozart concertos 20 and 25 where he conducted from the piano! sublime!

    • @jeremyd1021
      @jeremyd1021 Před 6 lety +4

      I agree, The Beethoven 3 was not his best. He seemed very detached that evening, like a ghost almost.. You will doubtless recall then during Gaspard, in le Gibet, someone outside the hall must have sent what sounded like 300 glasses or cups crashing from the bar. The audience froze and I was convinced ABM would just walk off stage, but his concentration was so intense I don't think he even heard it, as he did not miss a beat, whereas all in the audience surely skipped several beats of their heart.
      Every pianist in London would attend these concerts just wishing they had an ounce of his command and charisma and the atmosphere was electric, always. The problem is that such experiences made it almost impossible to go to concerts thereafter. Once you have witnessed the very last stone at the top of the pyramid, everything else palls. The only recital that came close which I am sure you went to was Richter at the Barbican, 3 Mozart sonatas and 12 Etudes of Chopin, a last minute change of program from Bartok, Hindemith and Prokofiev, dispatched in a whirlwind, as he was in a furore that evening

    • @nosehow2liv525
      @nosehow2liv525 Před 6 lety +2

      I might add that i was one of many who heartily disliked the cold, aloof, over-controlled performances of ABM, either in London or elsewhere. Same with this ghastly rending; clangy, speed-obsessed, insensitve to phrasing, flow of tempi, Grieg's spacious atmosphere goes for nothing.... ABM has his unconditional admirers, fair enough, but don't assume it's a universal opinion. ABM's reputation for accuracy also suffers a series of blows here.
      Anyone who continues to hold the discredited view of Rachmaninoff 4th concerto today has lost the right to be taken seriously!
      Fortunately, l'aigle vole seul....ainsi que ses opinions!

Horowitz told me on several occasions that Beethoven didn’t know how to write for the Piano and he Preferred Clementi’s Sonatas to Beethoven Sonatas !…… he gave the Fugue of the Hammerklavier Sonata as an example of terrible Piano writing. I know it’s hard to believe, but Horowitz also had odd taste in Piano Concerti ...He only recorded 1 out of the 4 Rachmaninoff Concerti, 1 out of the 5 Beethoven Concerti, Zero out of The 5 Prokofieff Concerti and Zero out of the 2 Liszt Piano Concerti, Zero out of the 2 Chopin Concerti, no Schumann Concerto..but, I’m sure that his Grieg Piano Concerto would have been Magnificent.

    Insane performance. Some utterrly compelling moments, some downright ridiculous ones. ABM must have smoked something dangerously strong before the performance. He is way beyond the speeding limit in some places. On the other hand, it's nice to hear Grieg's Concerto played in a powerful, athletic, no-nonsense way. The work's hardly a masterpiece, but it doesn't deserve the dreamy sentimentalising it is often subjected to. Hilarious to read the spiritual orgasms about Grieg and ABM in the comments.
