Live recording, London, 17.VI.1965
The best interpretation and implementation of Grieg's piano concert that I've heard before....
I would never get tired of listening to astounding performances like this from Benedetti Michelangeli. It is like admiring a sculpture from ancient Greece. Pure perfection
Questo Suonoo !!!!!!!! Sublime divino !!! Mamma mia ...
All comments mention Benedetti Michelangeli, deservedly no doubt, but the orchestra and the conductor are part of the achievement!
Certainly the conductor and the orchestra deserve their part. But Benedetti Michelangeli 's performance is decidedly beyond human capacity
Sonorità inaudite, insperata, timbro unico, tempistica divina.
Since 50 years I've listened to all the great pianist of the XX century and I love a lot of them... Cziffra, Sofronitsky, Guilels, Richter, Lipatti, etc but Michelangeli is the greatest pianist of all time
Lipatti is unsurpassed he had the best timing (in musical terms) and was even more brilliant in this concerto than Michelangeli, but Michelangeli shows here the most fiery performance I've ever heard. So both are in a class of their own.

I love this concert by Grieg, I have listened to interpretations, but a performance like this, especially of this cadence, I have not found, although there are very good ones.
It is breathtaking.
Probably the best Grieg you will ever hear. There was no one to compare with Michelangeli.

Sorry ,I didn't know Arrau recorded Grieg Concerto with Galliera as well, - great fact also...But could you send a link of Lipatti playing Grieg concerto, - live recording with Ansermet, - I thought there is just single recording of his Schumann concerto...(???)...

Never heard anything like it in my life. Astonishing.
This piece made me want to learn piano. It is the music that is played in heaven if it exist.
One can agree or disagree with Michelangeli's interpretation, but he was on fire. Massive phenomenal playing.
That's the way it is. Such a fiery game can hardly be heard today. Rather, the frequently played concerts seem worn out and lifeless.
Pianists of this kind are 1 in 100 years.
Dries Analog maybe.............I’m not sure.............

d2d4e6 You can‘t say he‘s wrong. Music is subjective. In your opinion Horowitz and Sokolov are all better pianists but thats your opinion. For example, I like ABM more that Rubenstein or Horowitz. And that‘s my opinion. Theres no „wrong“ in music taste. He just thinks ABM is something very special that happens every 100 years. Have a great day
Well, thank god for that!
@@salomonibrahim4040 there is wrong to a certain degree, but comparing the geniuses is pointless as they have transcended another level of interpretation. This is not an exact science, but its not far from it
Superhuman playing.
Undoubtabley the most glorious playing of this piece I have ever heard. Grieg must be ecstatic in heaven. I have goose bumps all over and tears of joy at the end. Never heard energy like this. Absolument incomparable !
This is the 1960's when Michelangeli was overwhelming. The world's greatest other pianists all knew he was the greatest at that time. Listen to (and the video is also available) the Beethoven Op. 111 from 1964. The legendary Prato 1967 performance is still available (it is back on YT as of two weeks ago). This specific performance of the Grieg is impossible, for power, rhythm, strength, drama, and details. Even later sometimes - listen to the Munich April 1985 - he was impossible, unapproachable.

The piano embellishments always contribute to the work. By some miracle they are an indispensable part of the fabric.
One of the greatest performances...totally dedicated..electric...completely immersed in the score
Electrifying playing, no one apart ABM can play like this. And he makes not very great music sound very great, he did the same with his famous recording of the terrible Rach 4 concerto, which is a very poor work, but with ABM on fire at the piano it is like a scintillating etude from start to finish. Incomparable, and for those of us lucky enough to have heard and seen him live in the concerts he gave in London in the late 80's and around 1990, life changing events, I assure you.
I went to all his London concerts and recitals during that period save for the Emperor concerto all, save the Beethoven 3 with Tilson Thomas, were extraordinary. I also went to Bregenz and heard him do two Mozart concertos 20 and 25 where he conducted from the piano! sublime!
I agree, The Beethoven 3 was not his best. He seemed very detached that evening, like a ghost almost.. You will doubtless recall then during Gaspard, in le Gibet, someone outside the hall must have sent what sounded like 300 glasses or cups crashing from the bar. The audience froze and I was convinced ABM would just walk off stage, but his concentration was so intense I don't think he even heard it, as he did not miss a beat, whereas all in the audience surely skipped several beats of their heart.
Every pianist in London would attend these concerts just wishing they had an ounce of his command and charisma and the atmosphere was electric, always. The problem is that such experiences made it almost impossible to go to concerts thereafter. Once you have witnessed the very last stone at the top of the pyramid, everything else palls. The only recital that came close which I am sure you went to was Richter at the Barbican, 3 Mozart sonatas and 12 Etudes of Chopin, a last minute change of program from Bartok, Hindemith and Prokofiev, dispatched in a whirlwind, as he was in a furore that evening
I might add that i was one of many who heartily disliked the cold, aloof, over-controlled performances of ABM, either in London or elsewhere. Same with this ghastly rending; clangy, speed-obsessed, insensitve to phrasing, flow of tempi, Grieg's spacious atmosphere goes for nothing.... ABM has his unconditional admirers, fair enough, but don't assume it's a universal opinion. ABM's reputation for accuracy also suffers a series of blows here.
Anyone who continues to hold the discredited view of Rachmaninoff 4th concerto today has lost the right to be taken seriously!

He is way beyond the speeding limit in some places. On the other hand, it's nice to hear Grieg's Concerto played in a powerful, athletic, no-nonsense way. @@SELMER1947 I very much respect your defence of a musician of exceptional genius. There is always a place for artists with such big egos as they can shine new light on a work.
