- Hey! Welcome to my channel! I really want to create a positive and uplifting place to talk openly about my experience with having thyroid cancer, all the way from diagnosis to post surgery recovery.
It is such a rare form of cancer and is unfortunately very common in young women, I couldn't think of a better way to raise awareness and help others than by sharing my story.
I want to start off by saying that I am not a medical professional. I am simply sharing my story as if you are listening to a friend. I had my thyroid removed about 9 months ago. My speaking voice sounds fine but my singing voice isn’t the same. My loved ones don’t understand how hard it is. Thank you for this video.

I had my thyroid out 10/6/23 due to cancer.
I have been singing my entire life for fun, in school and church.
Currently i can't change pitch in my voice.
I feel like I have to force the air out to speak.
I saw the video in real time where the ENT visualized my vocal chords 2 weeks post op and they were functioning fine.
I love singing for the Lord. It's hard but I am holding onto my faith that God will restore it.
I'm glad there are others to discuss this.
I’m post op 2 weeks and so glad I just saw your video ( 10/26/2022) my voice is awful. My throat is killing me and feels like I have a huge lump in my throat and constant phlegm. I keep reading it can take 6-12 months for my voice to return. I had a piece of thyroid tissue stuck to my vocal cords and it took them time to remove it but they assured me nothing was injured. I’m just so scared I will feel like this forever. I’m not a singer so I can only imagine all the fear and frustration you’ve gone through. I hope at this point in your life all is well and your singing voice is back
Hi!!! Did you ever recover your voice? This is what happened to me. My nerve was wrapped around my nodule.
So I came across this because I just had the same surgery and was looking for recovery for voice. And I just. Your emotions and truth are so raw and I'm so grateful for that. And also YOU SING LIKE A FREAKING DISNEY PRINCESS. IM IN LOVE

Thank you for uploading this ♥️ I cry with you as I am a little over 4 months post op and I still can’t sing properly. You’re a better singer than I’ve ever been or ever will be lol, but yeah it’s been a favorite hobby of mine since I was a little kid. it’s so frustrating not being able to do one of the few things I enjoy. When they told me before the surgery that I may have vocal chord damage I burst into tears. I don’t care about the scar or having to take meds for the rest of my life... I just miss being able to sing along to my favorites. I still have the full lower range ability, but I can’t go nearly as high as I used to. It’s the strangest sensation, it’s like I have the muscle memory in my head, but the physicality is not. The muscles and nerves are still healing in my throat so I know I have to be patient but... it’s just so damn frustrating. This gives me some hope though! And please know you’re amazing! You’ll get your debut I just know it 🤗

I am 8 days out and am hoping my voice comes back. At the moment have no high
range at all and barely have any notes. OH you are doing well.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I sing in a band but nowhere at the level you can sing at.........getting my thyroid out next week quite terrified, but your video has made me feel a whole lot better about it. Got to say i had a little cry when you were finding it tough. All the best

8 months since my thyroidectomy and I can so relate to all of this. While not a singer, I'm still getting my voice back for singing. You never know how much you miss something until you don't have it, and I related to your breakdown in the middle. I have no pain when singing and the ENT says there was no damage to my vocal chord, but that it was 'stunned' and he thinks it will come back. At 1 year (Jan 2022) he will examine it again. Laryngitis coming off a covid infection was my symptom. Lasted for 10 weeks. Then I was informed I have thyroid cancer. I went in to surgery and woke up in the ICU because of an unknown succinycholine allergy. I had the thyroidectomy a month ago, and I cannot speak louder than a whisper.
I am a singer like you and had a full thyroidectomy on June 5. I have started singing again SLOWLY, taking my time and not pushing anything. There was no damage to the vocal chords so that is great BUT my neck muscles have not fully healed yet. This takes time, perhaps 3 or more months, but I am confident I will sing again. DO NOT push it! Take it slow...
I'm a singer too and I had a full thyroidectomy in 2012. I used to be able to sing as high as C6. I can barely get up to a E5 now. I lost my voice for about 3 months entirely right after the surgery. If you have advice for how to get my high range back, please let me know. Right now my range is A#2 - E5. I can hit an A or A#5, and sometimes a B5 humming or screaming lol but I can't sing them and I can't figure out how to get my head voice back.
@@LarsyD Hi Laura sorry to hear about the vocal range. Did you inquire from the doctor if the laryngeal nerve was compromised? It is a bit unusual but not uncommon to lose you voice entirely after surgery. Glad it came back. I am not a doctor so I suggest you consult a otolaryngologist to see if they can do some testing to see what may be going on. Unfortunately sometimes the voice is just not quite the same afterward. I have yet to know if I will be able to reach my high tenor range I had prior to surgery, but so far so good I am taking it SLOW. Best of luck!
Wow....thank you! I had my surgery in February, it is now May. I still cannot sing normally, though my range has increased some. I am going to start doing therapy with a speech therapist who is an avid singer. I am praying I can sing again :(

Blimey! Even with a raging bloody sore throat, your voice sounds flames! I don't sing like that even on me best days, nevermind me worst!
Thank you for sharing, I’m 5 weeks post op and going for injections on my vocal cords tomorrow.
It is very hard not being able to project at all.. I’m starting to think I’ll never sing again, or talk normal for that matter. I so relate to this.

I had my surgery more than a year ago.. I am thankful beating C too... my voice now is hoarse whenever I try to sing like 3-4 songs and I lost (most) control of my singing voice.. I also cannot belt out that much... i'm kinda sad because I cannot sing the same as before :( I don't know where to start to bring it back..
I feel the same way. I can’t belt the high notes like I used to before the surgery for thyroid cancer 😔.
But I remain grateful to GOD that I am still alive, and still be able to sing, even if it’s in the lower register 🙏

I had the surgery two weeks ago. I tried to do a warm up today but I was hurting and I stopped. There was no damage to my vocal cords, but my voice and my range is nothing like it was before. I got so frustrated before your video. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. You gave me a ray of hope ❤️

I understand how you might be feeling, my voice regularly feels tired even after the shortest amount of voice use and I’m almost a year and a half out of surgery! I keep telling myself it will always get better! 🦋

I don’t sing, but 10 days post total thyroidectomy and I cannot speak any louder than a whisper. If I do one day, I can’t the next few from that one effort.
I see my surgeon for the first time in the morning so hopefully they will have some tips.
Post surgery they said the vocal chords and nerves were undamaged and it appears the lack of voice is from aggravation to airways… I don’t know about that. It definitely seems to be the larynx as I am getting wicked reflux…
Anyway, thanks for sharing. And please speak loudly with volume for those of us who can’t x
Thankyou so so much for this, I am going through thyroid issues and I tried singing today and felt disheartened that I do t have the same range that I am used to having, I really need to get it all diagnosed and start taking that levo medication. Lots of love 😊💙
It’s easier said than done but try not to put too much pressure on yourself to try and get your voice back to how it used to be. I’ve found that if I take time in my day to sing songs that I enjoy rather than ones that are technically challenging I can find the love for music that I used to have. I just had surgery 3 weeks ago and I am terrified that I may not be able to sing again. The doctor said that there was no damage to my vocal cords but I have noticed a difference in my range.
I got my thyroid removed 1,5 months ago. Nothing was damaged and I even could speak right afterwards, but I have NO control in my upper register at all since then. I can speak normally and Im really thankful for that, but Im heartbroken that singing, which was usually easy and fun for me is now hard work and hurts sometime. I still cant reach high notes, my volume is basically gone and I regulary have setbacks, but I refuse to give up singing.
I just had a total thyroidectomy in January (2024). The surgeon assured me everything went well. I can talk (ok… sometimes my voice cracks like a 13 year old boy), but I can NOT sing! I can stay in tune in a very deep register but anything higher and I sound like a goat (some kind of weird vibrato) and I can’t even hit the notes. I lip sync now! I’m so sad. Does anyone know when is a good time to start vocal training? My doctor has been very vague and not concerned about it!
I'm 8 days post TT, left and central neck dissection. I could easily hit a C6 when warmed up, but right now can barely get near even a C4. I woke immediately with my talking voice, albeit croaky but feel like my voice box doesn't move up anymore. Am I being too impatient do you think, and I need to wait for the swelling to go down first? I've been coping well thus far, but today am terrified I'll never be able to sing again 😢

It's a really freaky experience for sure. I just had mine removed about 3 weeks ago and I still can't access the higher register of my voice. I know it'll take more time than that for it to come back but I love singing, so this just hurts my soul. I specifically love singing songs from live musicals so I'm coping by watching performance videos.
I remember like the first two days, I could barely speak and it was painful to try. And when I did try, it would send me into these coughing fits that made it feel like I had liquid in my chest that I needed to cough up. Thankfully, that gross and painful cough was gone by like day 4.
But yeah so I'm spending my time trying to see if I can find any videos of any possible exercises to strengthen the voice after a thyroidectomy.
Edit: 5:15 I can't get anywhere NEAR that first note and I'm upset about it 😭

You have a lovely sense of humour! And voice apparently! My voice is changing, neck pain, and obvious lumps. Waiting for ultrasound scan . I’m 57 here in New Brunswick Canada with basic gov’t ins. so the wait may drag on... my white cells are low, TSH normal as I’ve taken Synthroid for years. Thank you Eleanor!

Got a call today for September! Isn’t that crazy! Over 5 months away... I might move back to the city just an hour away as my son and his wife and two little ones would like. The wee hospital here isn’t what I need now. Have you ever heard of “brain drain” ? Docs and specialists go to the US, to my south. Plus services are constantly being cut back. And back some more...

Hi, I had thyroidectomy but ALOS got my neck fused c3-c7 then a year later got the plate removed and a year later got the backside fused due to a fall. Lost the high range in my voice but my lows became of thunder. So I refound my vocal range and retuned music to fit my range. Over time of some years my range got a bit higher. Never quite what it used to be though.
how did you do that to reach the high notes ?? can you tell me more about it ? can you help me ? what kind of processess did you do ?

Hey! I have been absent on YT for a couple of months so I hope I’m not too late to reply! I’m sorry to hear you lost your voice after surgery. I would recommend trying to speak to a speech therapist or someone that specialises in vocal rehabilitation. I don’t think it’s too late to ever work or your voice however I’m not sure I’m qualified to give any proper advice! Be patient with yourself and take it all one step at a time! 💓 xxxx
Same here as a soprano...I am now an alto my voice is not the same nor my range but I find if I push hard...I can get up there.. but can't stay....my surgery was a success with no damages but it feels like I have tight muscles when I sing
It’s 2 months now after my total thyroidectomy. I still can’t regain my voice. Can’t even raise a higher tune after a sentence. I want my singing voice back :( can no longer do a falsetto 😢

I had a thyroidectomy exactly one year ago, my High notes have not fully returned, but I'm very comfortable in low notes and I'm learning to love alto. I had to relinquish my position as Worship Leader, which was the MOST difficult decision I've ever had to make, but I'm doing vocal exercises and they are helping. Don't worry falsetto will come..
Sameee I know I'm not a singer but I can belt high notes before, I can also whistle, but after TT, my voice break can't hit notes...I'm 6mos. Post surgery

@@kathyperalta8339everybody goin 2:31 g through this process, pacience , let your throat heal , will need some time at least 4 to 6 mi this yo get your singing voice back, better safe than sorry , take the time rest your voice and slowly after 3 months or so, start to work your way back to singing againg. It’s worth the wait.

Ion even think I can scream lol I’m on ur in and I can’t yell to a certain point and my singing love is gone I can hold a tone but the high notes etc I can’t do any more my right nerve and left vocal was removed and put back in ugh I love to sing too smh it sucks I get sad some times I wish I can afford singing lessons

I just had my thyroid removed October 18, 2023. Before surgery, I had a range of C3 to A#5 (middle C is C4). I know I'm less than a month out from surgery, but I'm currently only able to go from C3 to D4. I croak at E4 and F4, and I can't get any higher than that. There was no nerve damage in surgery. I hate this so much. I miss singing. 😭 Literally any help or suggestions would be appreciated
How is your voice recovering now? I am 8 weeks out from ablation and had same original range and same smaller range post procedure. I’m heartbroken.

She mut have taken radioactive iodine 123 to detect cancer. Now that they found something is wrong, she went with surgury.
How are you now?
