In the far reaches of Imperial space, a ferocious warp storm approaches an Administratum world, cutting off the entire planet from the rest of the Imperium. As their towering grey spires are punished by endless rain, countless administrators, tithe-masters, and book-keepers are forced to evacuate. I like how the scariest thing that is depicted in this story isn't the asshole inquisitor or the warp demon or the mass murdering gal. Its working an office job. It also shows just how broken the Imperium's system is that paperwork mistakes ( or sabotaged on purpose) that lead to billions of deaths are not noticed or they were noticed but there so common they were not seen as bad enough to look into it.
When a billion dead is a rounding error, what's a poor bureaucrat to do?
I did love that is was 'just' some lady. I'm glad the Warp was the red herring.

Fun fact: One of the planets hit with cannibalism they reference is Verghast (I believe it's spelled like that). In one of the Gaunts Ghosts novels, Guardsman survivors from Verghast do more cannibalism on another planet, causing a wave of sickness through the camp that Gaunt discovers and deals with.

One of the reasons I liked the book was something the cultists said, “the watchers rain will drown the sins of the world”. The horrible people were the main characters, the watcher served to drag their sins and guilt up to the surface, plus both the twist endings were amazing. One of my most favorite audio dramas/books that I have ever heard.
It be nice detail if planet popped out of the warp with survivors, perfectly fine, since none of them committed any sins, the watcher just left them alone.
This book sounds great, as for the potential controversy bricky was worried about, i actually prefer that it's not a chaos story, i find that that's where the horror should come from, not inherently from the supernatural cause we as fans sort of know too much about chaos already so there's not as much shock value. But the horror of the mundane and the horror of humanity is something that can be the scariest thing in Warhammer
Like in ciaphas cain there's a moment played for laughs where cain says something like "i thought i was going a bit siggy" and amberley in her footnotes is like "Cain is referencing blah blah sigma, a planet containing a well known hospital for guardsman whose minds have been broken, coincidentally the solar system also has the biggest servitor factory in the segmentum" like it's funny in the context of the story, but it's just one of those "holy shit" imperium moments
I guess the real Watchers in the Rain were the friends we made along the way.
The actual watcher in the Rain is honestly an interesting Warp Creature Like the Adept says it's basically a mirror that shows you as you really are.
But when you think about it that in of itself isn't evil. Let's remember the first guy who saw it, the guy who was proud how efficient and successful his department was. He didn't go crazy. I think the reason was because he was a good person. A bit of dick but honestly a good guy.
When his Servitor was trashed he didn't think about the PDF trooper being killed, enslaved or anything like that. Just charged for the amount of cash needed to reimburse him. When he saw the watcher and thought it was a person he wanted someone to go there even though it was just a random person.
But because everyone left on the world were scumbags (including the main characters) of course they would be so negatively effected.
I also wonder, if you did something but you truly did not have any guilt or remorse for it whatsoever what effect would the Watcher have on you if any at all?
I like to imagine the watcher was always there he just never took form or something and when he was looking at the old man he was looking into his soul and found him innocent so he left him alone

One of the things I liked most about the book was how the interrogator talked about not just the torture/murder of his mother but how he was pressed immediately into doing another after another. It’s a way of desensitization that applies to people committing real world atrocities, once it becomes routine it loses the impact the act has
Yep. Also he himself being interrogated about it and being further conditioned by his master to not have any feelings regarding what he did. I think the point is that Inquisitors are going to come up against the worst of the worst people and to have an unfeeling and iron will to deal with them without thinking or second guessing. Like with the scribe, they'll have people who will plead and plead all day and may actually seem innocent and if your empathy and conscience gets in the way you may let them go. However, your trained to not let that happen. Torture/kill them immediately no matter what they say or how they plead. The risk of letting a potential threat loose is too great. 40k is an absolutely brutal universe and I love it lol
This book shows that, while chaos may be creepy, humanity has the potential to be worse.
The watcher was just being edgy, the interrogator butchered his own mom. The administratum bitch killed billions and the guardsmen are literally eating people.
This is good world building
I also really enjoy how the world has been affected by the characters, and how their actions have consequences.
I'd say humanity has the potential to be just as bad, not worse... but the story's point remains the same either way!
And yet still when I tell someone from the love of nurgle all they do is scream "eww what the fuck are you?!" or "do you know what a shower is?" and while I do not. It still hurts...

The watcher is not edgy, he just guilt taken form, he not evil, infact he most likely a good warp entity, hunting down worse of mortals and forcing them to see what they become.
Watcher ironically is the hero of the story.
At first the scribe just seemed to have a strong enough will to resist the warp phenomena that she appeared to have unfortunately stumbled into, while the inquisitors guilt was to much for him to ignore. It makes for an impactful realisation, when it is revealed, that her sins were just so terrible, she was unable to bear the consequences of them staring her in the face.
i actually love this story. and i love the water in the rain as a conspect. people forget that the warp isnt just, khron, Tzeentch, Nugle and slaanesh. its all emotion, all thoughts and so on and so forth. i think the watcher is a manifestation of guilt. i also like that the girl wasnt chaos, she is just the kind of person the empires mindless bureaucracy breeds. this is what happens when one of the cogs that runs the empire snapes
It gives that mix of 'shielded by the rain' feel, but also that drowning fear with how much rain there is, and even a sort figurative 'drown in your sins' feel to it.
From the theme and atmosphere, to the characters, pacing and twists in the narrative. The Watcher in the Rain is a fantastic audio drama that depicts the horrors in the horrid universe, from even the closest of places, depicting how frail and brittle justice is, and with a fantastic taste of cosmic horror. I tend to end up listening to this podcast while at my job cleaning up after 20+ dog and scrubbing kennels, its a nice distraction from the literal shit Im dealing with. And hey, the smell at work adds to any episode where they talk about nurgle stuff.
But the real shame is that while im listening at work i miss out on shy's glorious editing and additions to the show.
So, of all the episodes to come out when i actually have the free time to actually watch when NOT working, im glad it was this one.

Like in Appleseed where the big computer has a bunch of mechanical locks you have to unscrew out of their housings then fire some kind of gun into to actually open the hinges, totally impractical but so fun
Makes me think of the "Fight me your filling system sucks" energy of Cutter from The all guardsmen party. A scribe turned melee specialist guardsmen.
The atmosphere building for chaos knights in this was fucking great; that adds a whole new level to the imagination of the fights-and what those who fight it have to deal with. Add: think of a knight aligned with Khorne, people in it's vicinity begin to hallucinate psychotic delusions, erratic thoughts influencing you, you're becoming very frustrated and short tempered. Someone nearby grabs and begins to pummel someone else, more fights break out, then the red hue you've begun to see the world through snaps to a darker shade; it's the knights shadow.
Bricky and DK should do the Trials of Azrael audiodrama. One of the best depictions of Kharn the Betrayer I've seen.
And Azrael. SPOILER ALERT I like the ending when he returns to Save that woman 🙂

I REALLY liked this. The absolute size and bloat of the Imperium where only two out of thousands of mis-filings were noticed, the actions the Imperium will justify for a clearly unnecessary solution, and the power a single scribe on a single world has, in a galaxy of millions. Lots of great themes wrapped in a nice presentation, and I can’t ask for much more.
With how bloated it is and how many cogs there are in the machine even if mistakes were found it would be so hard to even trace it back to who did it. It would be so easy to just go under the radar
5:00 Plot twist, what if the among us crew are actually giant and terrifying outside their suits? Like, the tounge knife the imposter kills people with? What if they all have that, and they just don't use it 'cause they're not insane enough to enjoy the taste of raw brain.

A typhoon is a hurricane anywhere other than the Atlantic. A monsoon is a specific seasonal wind that makes it rain harder, or is used to refer to the period of time when said wind is active.

My take is the watcher and the warp storm were created/brought on by her, if the warp is a reflection and amplification of our emotions I'd say the emotions of killing billions is going to do something.
If one non psyker having a mental episode could cause a warpstorm the universe would've ended long ago

I think the point of the actual watcher was that no matter how you run, your consequences will catch you, the interrogator was able to witness his crimes and realise what he had become, when she shot him he understood why and didn't begrudge her, he begrudged that she got away with all of the horrors she visited on innocent people, however he was allowed to die his consequences knowing what he had done, the woman on the other hand who's denial was not broken will die without knowing why. Both are monsters, but one may yet be forgiven because he can now see his own actions for what they are, the other will never know their own guilt and thus never be at rest. The watcher is then the final hope that a monster may have a chance

What I loved about the story so much is that it didn't rely on some evil dark gods or aliens to be the monsters, but the monsters are far closer to home. I like when horror doesn't have to rely on over the top, outlandish stuff like the paranormal.
And in the Warhammer universe too!

No matter how many times I watch this, Peter Turbo's smug grin will always be the best part of an episode, usually because the thing accompanying it is a riot.

The moment the servo-skull bugged out was the freakiest fucking thing ever.
One of the cool things in the recording is that whenever the watcher does its mind fuckery on someone and says "Will you see me?" It always says it in the voice of the person that it's fucking with. This is something really neat that makes the full cast recording special. When its fucks with the scribe in the beginning, it's her voice. When it fucks with the interrogator, it's in his voice. It IS you, all the worst parts of you.
The fact that Bricky and DK talked about the Watcher in the Rain which is an entity that haunts people, especially murderers. Is just a ploy to prevent Shy from capping them with a 45acp. Unless she wants the watcher who is also just a little guy to haunt her as well.

One of my favorite things about this is, the watcher in the rain is a warp entity. It doesn't seem to be associated with any of the gods, its a demon or entity. It might not even be malignant or evil, you also forgot to mention that it seems to grow off of getting people to notice it.
The guy at the beginning saw the watcher right as his precious servitor was destroyed and he only thought of properly fining the pdf guy who tossed it, so i recon he was a good person

What I was hoping for as an ending was that even though the interrogator may have died he left his recorder/radio on and her boasting was transmitted to the nearby ship that was actually an Inquisition ship.
No. That would unbearably cliche snd contrived.
The ending was contrived enough, but in a much better and more satisfying manner.

If you still wanted the cannibals to be in the book I'd say they should've met the cannibals earlier on and that's what prompted her to be released, so she could fight for her survival as well.

Well, I think we get a better ending than that. Instead of that she gets eaten alive by guardsmen that are starving due probably to her fucking up logistics
I love the watcher in the rain because it really shows how the watcher itself is not the monster but instead the embodiment of regret and self loathing. It’s the catalyst through which we as an audience are reminded of how fucked up the Imperium is. The twist of the scribe being responsible for billions of deaths all because she was sick of her life and her enforced occupation really drills in the fact that the Imperium’s worst enemy is itself. No warp entity like the watcher has caused more damage to humanity than humanity has caused to itself. Its a very poetic statement.
