- Welcome to my channel about dinghy cruising a John Welsford designed standing lug yawl 'navigator' called Arwen. In this video Arwen and I go for a quick sail in light wind conditions and end up meeting another navigator on Plymouth Sound.
Other videos on my channel cover my developing skills in dinghy cruising and maintaining a small open boat along the fabulous coastal waters and rivers of SW England. I post at least one video or blog post a fortnight. You can follow Arwen's blog at www.arwensmeanderings.blogspot.co.uk
If you enjoy everything to do with learning to sail small open boats and dinghy cruising/camping in stunning scenery then come subscribe to my channel and blog. Click the notification bell and download a video or explore Arwen's themed playlists.
I look forward to hearing and sharing your comments, advice and tips.
Fair winds to you all and happy sailing whether it be out on the water or from your armchair.
Steve and Arwen
Absolutely brilliant, now there are two Navigators, thanks Steve.
There is a third. Karl has one locally but Ive yet to catch up with him. His is pretty classy as well by all accounts. Poor Arwen 🙄😀
What a treat to see your on the water again. After a few days in bed feeling quite unwell, your video was better than anything the quack has prescribed.
Hey sumo bear...how r u....get better asap.....will post again as soon as I can for you
Good to see you on the water. Waiving and smiling at you.
Hi Kevin. How u doing? Good to be back on the water again and can't wait for some camp cruising
@@plymouthwelshboy I'm doing very well and looking forward to a sunny spring :) Forever optimistic. Thanks for sharing that lovely day out, the lack of wind aside. The shots of the other Welsford were great. They are pretty boats.
So very happy to see you and Arwen back out on the water, with the added pleasure of seeing Cher Maria. Looking forward to more of your sailing videos to take us out of these last wintry days in northern Japan. Thank you!
Most welcome. Hope u are safe and well Mike
@@plymouthwelshboy Very well, thank you. It's good to believe in the promise of spring!
Isn't it just.....😄
What a lovely day!
Thank you. Yes it was splendid I. A low key kind of way
Gees mate it looks like a Queensland winter....glorious. I love days like that because it allows me to learn how my boat works without the stress of high winds and messy seas. I'm still learning the ropes so to speak. The Navigator is a wonderful boat. One came up for sale here and a good bloke "dinghy cruising kingfisher" picked her up and he hasn't been disappointed.
Navigator is a fantastic boat, I just wish I was a better skipper for it 🙄😄
Lovely film and greetings from North Devon !! 😊
Thank you...we are practically neighbours 🤣. Love North Devon.....beautiful area
Great to see you and Arwen out on the water again Steve hope to catch up when Polly and I get out on the sound again soon
Looking forward to it Kevin keep in touch
Thanks for posting. Looks idyllic down there. Love the flag. I hope one day to join you with my wayfarer.
Plymouth sound and rivers great for wayfarer...
You guys both looked great out there my friends! I hope to get out on the water soon as well. Cheers!
Hey Joel. How u doin? Safe and well?
@@plymouthwelshboy Quite well, Steve, thank you. Looking forward to better weather so I can get out too.
Look forward to a video and blog Joel
Trailer looking really well sorted. I like the look of that snubber post, an adjustable one like that is probs what I need as mine is is in completely the wrong position and doesn't actually catch the bow at all!
I e tried to get several bits which are adjustable 😄
Do you mind saying where you got the snubber post from?
Came with the trailer...admiral trailers up at Honiton
Hi Steve. Any chance you could do a little video of the rowing set up? Trim has no rowlocks, nor anywhere to sit to row. And oar length, how you stow them etc? Anyway Thanks for posting this video. Josh
Hi Josh......will do rowing when next out....mine is primative....and not efficient
What outboard do you use? And how much was your trailer - looks lovely 🙂👍… can’t wait to get out in the Sound… maybe in May??
Tohastsu 3.5hp...its a fair few years old now. Trailer is from admiral trailers and their base model was just over £1000 but I had some adaptations for various reasons so it cost more. Tony is a good.bloke to go see if you are looking for a new trailer
I was hoping you would be out on the water soon.....bet it was cold in the wind.
Hello Steven...how u doing? Actually it was lovely and warm and barely any breeze.... it was during that warm spell last week. Just good to be back out on the water again and with a trailer that is now working far better 👍
@@plymouthwelshboy ah.....thought it was more recent......bloody cold today !. Nice to see another Navi....is he local too ?
Yep Plymouth. Lovely workmanship.....real class boat
HOPE you are well, its been longer than usual since you last posted.
hi sumo bear - yeah all ok - thank you for asking. I went out yesterday but had to abandon it - the forecast was completely wrong and after a few gusts of 35mph even under just jib and mizzen it became too squally and i abandoned the trip - no video as i was hanging on for most of the time out. My only consolation is that a few others were out and contacted me on facebook to say they saw me struggling and so were they and they all followed me back in :)
correction - i managed to find a snippet of chaos when i tried to tack into calmer water and botched it each time and then watched as my paddle started to go adrift and the mizzen got caught on the upraised outboard engine - after this short clip - it got seriously gusty and boats were all heading back in - it wasn't the steady winds - it was the gusts - very violent

@@plymouthwelshboy Great news that your well and on the water again and will soon be telling yourself off for doing something wrong.
I thought side Rollers were not recommened for plywood boats (Advice John Welsford gave me). Too much pressure over to small an area.
True but I was having so much trouble with the bunks, just couldn't move the boat off them without having to use a rope from tow ball to trailer snubbing post to totally submerge the trailer. The rollers are positioned just so that they go under the flat hull bit. A double set spreads the load more. The bulk of the weight is on the keel rollers so the wobble ones are sort of supporting and reducing sideways movement. The rollers are a softer type less rigid than normal ones...they give a little. It was a compromise. My old trailer was a roller glide which was very heavy, very wide and the rollers damaged the paintwork constantly. The hitch kept jamming on the ball when at an incline on my steep driveway so disconnecting her from the car became a real hassle.
The new trailer is lighter, narrower, shorter easier to move around, far easier to out on the driveway and a dream to tow. With the boat overhang and roller sets, Arwen just takes a couple of shoves and she is off. The rollers haven't damaged the paintwork this far. Getting her back.on is trickier...she has a tendency to go towards the starboard side as you winch her on so she sits skew wiff to one side. Interestingly, I saw Matt's navigator did same.on his trailer. I suspect it's because the engine sits that side and so causes an imbalance as it comes on. Next trip I will take engine off before retrieving to see if that is the case ..... I was looking for a trailer with a v type frame and bunks and keel rollers but couldn't find one at a price point I could afford, either new or second hand.....life is full of compromises.....this was a good deal with excellent customer service and knowledge to boot....😀
@@plymouthwelshboy thanks for the indepth reply. I'm not having much luck finding a suitable trailer for the Swiftsure I'm building So probably going to build one.
Finding a trailer straight off is hard. Good luck with your search. Try admiral trailers.....they were quite adaptable and good in their thinking
