Absolutely brilliant mate - got the same engine and same issue with mine - going to fit the same part tomorrow and hopefully fans don’t come on from cold start and it doesn’t keep flashing up with the same lights!
A nice, straightforward and handy exchange fix. Goes to show that BMWs don't have to be a serious drain on the wallet. Sensors will fail over time on all makes and models. Hate the 'death bong' warning though!
Yeah, that sound goes right through ya! Worst thing is that it makes the exact same noise if the temperature outside goes below 3 degrees centigrade! 😂

I had the same problem, N47 engine thinking it was overheating & the fan coming on after a minute of start up. Can't remember how but there is a way of scrolling through menus on the dashboard (where your mileage raeds) & getting to a coolant temperaure reading. Mine was showing 40ºC first thing in the morning & zipped up in temp once the car started. So it was that coolant temperature sensor at fault. £15 for a new one, easy fix.
Hey Kev! I had the same issue with the Yellow overheating lamp. Changed the water pump and thermostat. Looked up the temp while test driving and everything looked good. But now after a few weeks the warning is back.. Maybe it’s the sensor? Ordered one now.. 118d N47 with 33.0000 kms PS. My misses drove the car 5 hours ago and I just traveled back from work. Went to the garage to have a look. Secret menu states the coolant temp is 122 Celsius. Probably the sensor then.. Getting the new one next week
The test for this is testing its resistance with a multimeter set it to ohms(resistance) and place a probe on each pin in the sensor your reading when the engine is at 20 degrees is 2500 to 3k ohms at 50 degree its 700 to 900 ohms at 100 degree its 120 to 170 ohms sourced from auto data its what I utilised for my sensor on my N47 engine
Exact same issue happened to me a few months ago, but before jumping right to replacing the sensor, to confirm the diagnostic I've read the coolant temp from the hidden menu the dash has. Was at 85 celsius on cold start, made it clear the sensor was faulty.
What was the temperature you were monitoring to diagnosed this? Coolant temp 85deg, oil temp? Engine temp? What readinga did you get? What it should be around in cold start or operating temp? Thank you
@@bathanmark It was coolant temp. As the issue happened during summer, coolant temp on cold start should have been around 20°C, like the ambiant temp more or less.
@@patsuperfast thanks for replying. That became obvious on your one as it was 85C in cold start and ambient is 20C in summer time. Should have been well around 20C at cold start. What do you think about mine. Coolant level is ok, at cold start i could see mine to be same as ambient temp but during running and when I check at idle i could see the reading like, Oil temp reach 100C, coolant temp 100C and engine temp 95C I dont know if this is normal. It seems high?! I drive a 2015 BMW 3 series diesel. I drove a none BMW car before and it reads and maintain 75-85C on all those 3 sensors, oil, engine and coolant. Thank you
