Walking the crescent along the Oswegatchie River, Ogdensburg, NY
I was in Ogdensburg and decided to walk down by what’s known as the crescent along the Oswegatchie River. I remembered it as a tree line path with shade all times of the day and a nice walk where you could talk to the fisherman of what they were catching. I started the walk by the old 1858 armory, now law offices. I walked down Mechanic St. to the old power station. It was a nice memory; people were fishing but the crescent was under construction. It was still a nice walk, no shade but a nice walk. People were fishing and I decided to go up the stairs by the post office, got to the top and the stairs were blocked. No sign at the bottom, a walk back was necessary. My relatives in the area said the crescent was closed and no one was supposed to be there. City of Ogdensburg, a sign would have been nice and BTW, the gate at the top of the hill on Mechanic St. was open, with cars parked by the old station. I will say this, the crescent will be beautiful when finished.
The Oswegatchie River (Mohawk: Kaniatarahòn:tsi) begins from five minor flows in the Adirondack’s Five Ponds Wilderness Area, the River winds for 132 miles through St. Lawrence County before entering the St. Lawrence River at Ogdensburg. Oswegatchie is a native term meaning: GOING AROUND A HILL. [1]
The 35-mile section from Newton Falls to Hailesboro has a 970-foot drop in elevation. For the most part, anglers seeking warm water species are in the 67-mile segment of the river from Hailesboro to Ogdensburg. Fishing is good for walleyes, smallmouths, northern pike, and panfish. The free DEC brochure, “Fishing/Canoeing the Oswegatchie River” will help anglers in planning trips. [2]
The Oswegatchie Pumping Station was built in 1868 of random ashlar limestone. It is a two-story fortress like building which features connected tower projections at each of its four corners. [3]

Ogdensburg is the only city in St. Lawrence County, it has some nice places and it has some run down sections of the town. is it safe, yes, but like aby place if you are looking for trouble youi can find it. Not a lot of good paying jobs. I liked the place and just visited family there for Christmas. 😎
