I enjoy turn based combat. BG3 and SMT/Persona have some of the best turn based combat there is. But, I also love ATB turn based because it puts pressure on the player to make correct decisions. That being said, Super Mario RPG makes turn based fun and not enough games adopt that formula

Another thing I really like about the exclamation point, is that as you successfully get that action correct in a row, the exclamation point goes away until you get it wrong again!

I admit, as a big fan of Super Mario RPG, I never understood why the Timed Hits were not more widely adopted to Turn-Based RPGs. It is such a good system! In regards to a mix of a Rhythm and RPG game that is effectively these kind of "Quick Time Events" that when you use specials you have to do a portion of the actual background battle music as a Rhythm game to perform, I would look into Infinite Guitars. It's not a particularly difficult or in depth game, but as a fan of Rhythm and RPGs it's quite fun.

A game with an ATB system I really enjoyed was Child of Light! Child of Light has options in the settings to where you can change the speed of the bar moving, and its more so used to determine who goes first. Once its your turn, THEN you select your move, so its just a nifty way of determining speed instead of just, "your turn, my turn" since you have all the time in the world to strategize in the selection menu. The game also has a mechanic where if you block, your next action will come quicker, and stuff like that.

For me combining aspects of a rhythm game, and an RPG has largely detracted from my experience, this is not to say it can't be done correctly. Games like Mother 3 and Legend of Dragoon do a better job of this in my opinion. This game has too many shallow gimmicks that cause additional animations that unnecessarily elongate a battle such as 100 bonk super jump. Despite lacking rhythm based attack, games like Bravely Default and the Press Turn system from SMT add much more to the strategy of boss fights, and put you on the cusp of death for making mistakes, which can be thrilling. But also have fast forward features that respect your time for trash mobs, or grinding, which implements some variety between the boss fights, and normal enemies. I personally just don't get this game. It has charm, but far and away it puts me to sleep every time I try to play it. Mallow and Geno are iconic, but everything else in this game can die in a fire.

Less face and more game footage? Well, unless this is about skin care 🤣
