I love how the Guerilla wants to make it clear he doesn’t want to get tangled up in copyright infringement with a certain similar looking ape lol 😂
It's a reference to the king kong lawsuit Nintendo got from Universal
@panwasacz2733 nah its a joke about how gurrilla looks like donkey Kong it's in the og jp version as well
The remake improved that line so much
It’s a bit of all of that tbh.
@@panwasacz2733That's why they made Donkey Kong a thing
I love how so many of them are just like "La la la, life is great",
but then some are just like "life is pain, I am ready to die. Do it."
Count Down's bio entry just tells you to go to fucking bed.
😴

I love how Culex's crystals continue their thoughts from their 2d iterations and then the green one is just "swoosh"
12:46 Dang. The last thing I expected was a Yoshi's Island reference in this game. That's actually really awesome.
Lore? In my Mario game?!
@@NickMario1there is no lore lmao😂
@@moosesues8887you’re confusing Plot with Lore. Mario games traditionally have simple stories with not a lot of depth to them.
And even then, this specific game _actually_ introduced the lore of Star Hill and Star Spirits, which went on to be a recurring theme in the future Mario RPGs, most notably Paper Mario.
Mario lore isn’t even close to any other major Nintendo franchise in terms of lore, but it does still have some, as little as it does.
What I didn't expect was an enemy that actually thinks about Luigi at 5:13
Fun fact, in the original version he has a similar quote, being "That's... my son?", implying this isn't just any random Magikoopa but actually specifically Kamek
You normally can’t see 4 enemy thought peeks. Those are Terrapin, Bowser, Chaindelier and Hammer Bros. But if you talk to the hidden NPC in Booster Pass, you’ll get those 4 filled in.
What npc, where are they, I just passed that area.
Nevermind.

Oh I already have. Even beyond it.
Miracle transformation! ⭐I'll cast my manacle magic on your heart!

I love how smithy says "eh?! Not bad!" From all enemies that you mind read, smithy notices it and basiclly just says: "can read my mind? Not bad."
same with shy ranger
I love how Culex is just a walking fourth-wall break
more like 3rd wall break... he breached the third dimension
Culex is almost Jevil confirmed

-4th wall breaker(?)

Chaindelier finally gave me a small insight to a question I've always thought about: How much does Bowser pay his minions?
If you think about it, after the events of this game, paying them became infinitely easier ever since even to this day since a thankful Magikoopa literally CREATES A CHEST OF INFINITE MONEY!
@@FoxVidz2000And yet somehow answer is still clearly "not enough" even before Mario enters the picture and kicks their asses for another time.
@@MusicoftheDamnedThe top boss hoards all the weath and refuses to pay the workers. Now where have I heard that before?
Culex is really just this metagaming impressive looking guy who wants to see how strong the heroes are in this game.
He looks much like the typical main villain in RPGs like Final Fantasy, him looking way out of place in a world like Mario's.
@@BalanceHeroSMThe looks like that because he IS from Square Enix and it's meant to be a 4th wall breaker reference

Behold the power of post-game content!
Same here! What potential lies in humanity?
The localization team had a lot of fun with this game, I'm sure.
Reading the enemy descriptions of Smithy's various forms, I feel that is the understatement of the year.
The original game was translated by Ted Woolsey, a translator who was famous for taking humorous creative liberties with his localizations to convey or even improve upon the tone of the text rather than the literal meaning. While some of the original translations were changed for the remake, it looks like for the most part it remained unchanged and the new text was written with his style in mind.
@indigofenix00 And for anyone interested, Woosley was responsible for translation of a lot of Square Enix's rpg, including first 6 Final Fantasy games
Nearly every Thought Peek in this game has been rewritten in some way. I found two so far that are 1:1 with Ted Woolsey's translation.
I knew this was coming when the early trailers for this game showed very little text in game. The change from Toadstool to Peach cemented it that the game was going to get the same new translation Final Fantasy 4 Advance, 5 Advance, 6 Advance and Chrono Trigger DS got in the past. I don't know if Tom Slattery is still doing localizations, but this is on-brand with his handiwork.
@@GregoryWeagle I mean...is it a good thing or bad?
Culex’s thoughts are pretty funny.
Even his crystals hold emotions!
_You bet, child. I amuse myself from time to time._
Culex still being pixel during the first fight just so he can be 3d for the rematch is super fuckin cool.
Hammer bro pfp no way
@@westform22 Ayyyyy, you fuck with bro too?
For a place known as a tower of entertainment, some of the enemies there (Rob-omb, Dollox, the clowns) have surprisingly morbid thoughts.
That's why Booster and Valentina make a better match.
On the other hand, I'm sure Dodo will find a better half.
@@yourknightmannyNah, Dodo seems pretty happy as a minister. I think he could really turn his life around with some time to think on things. He probably has some good advice tucked away under all those feathers.
I love how the descriptions for each monster range from:
"This is an enemy. Their attacks hurt, so watch out!"
"This is a glimpse into this enemy's thought process, daily life and aspirations!"
"We still haven't figured out what the designers were smoking when they made this particular enemy...."
"You've been playing too long, please touch some grass."
I was expecting Mario's clone to have dialogue this time like "it's a Me!"
Apparently it knew less words than the real thing, he at least knows "it's a me!" And "let's a go!"
The original SMRPG came out before Mario 64, which is the first time Mario had spoken in a mainline game. They could have added the reference in the remake, but it looks like they tried to minimize changes.
...
!
The writing in this game is truly unparalleled. Both the Thought Peeks and the blurbs about the enemies are so damn charming, and make this world feel so much more lively and silly.
13:32 I have several questions.
for those of you who don't know how to unlock these thoughts, you need to use mallow's thought peek special move which costs 1 flower point. to unlock the thought in the monster list, you need to press A just before the spotlights stop on the enemy. if you time it right, the thought will appear in battle after you close the HP and weakness display
Also if you miss a thought peek for an enemy that you can't fight again, you can find the hidden NPC in Booster Pass and pay for them with 3 frog coins per thought peek. You will also get the thought peeks for the enemies that could only be fought before getting Mallow by talking to this NPC for the first time. They will give them for free.
@@ninjastronautguymagenta yes

Bobby Paper Mario Origami King, is that you?
Who knows? If it’s for the better good, I understand the sacrifice.
15:35 I've played this game since I was 9 years old. I'm these guys now.
Clone Mario is completely thoughtless. Only lifeless enemies get the “…” dialogue, and every other clone has dialogue… So either this Mario is so mute he doesn’t think in words, or Mario is a mindless husk, and I don’t know which is worse.
Mario is NOT a mindless husk! He’s just very careful with his thoughts!
@@pooky-changaming4089 Is there any proof in game on that? Genuinely curious.
Well if he was mindless he wouldn't do those pantomime narratives he does.
@@alunbuss7877 True, true. But now I’m wondering how Mario became a mute in the first place. Because in games after this he can talk perfectly fine.
Or Mario is secretly Red
Seems like Smithy phase 1 is unchanged, but Smithy phase 2 gives us some interesting insight to what was meant by "This isn't good at all!"
Only now, when he's felt your power enough to enter final form, does he recognise the full danger of having competent heroes against you.
Culex casually breaking the fourth wall for no reason:
Culex broke the second dimension into the third dimension as well, so let's break #4.
14:24 FF6 reference too!
Why do i love the fact that the boo is extremely shy!
"I'm afraid to go to the bathroom at night."
-strong mallow clone
R.I.P. Mouth's original name, Neosquid.
To this day, nobody knows what was up with that. His Japanese name was always "Mouth".
Gone but never forgotten
@@indigofenix00 When you look at the object on it's own without the rest of the sprite, and having no context, it resembles a squid-like shape. Basically because Ted Woolsey had to rush through some of his translations like this originally, he just saw the vague shape of the enemy and wrote that down real fast before moving onto the next.
@@the-NightStar Compound that with the fact that the Japanese version relies on a lot of puns, fusion names, corruptions, the fact that many of the names in the game are Mario characters with their share of differences (NokNok Shell anyone? Woolsey forgot that the North American localization was supposed to be Koopa Shell for consistency.), font size (Static E! is the biggest example. Woolsey tried, but there is no way "Electrostatic Discharge" (and that's not even the complete attack's name.) was going to fit, even in the remake.), Nintendo's censorship policies outside of Japan, time, resources etc. etc. etc. You get the picture.
Even the remake was going to be a halting task despite not having a lot of the problems Ted Woolsey had at the time due to heavy use of puns, fusion names, corruptions, and even font size to a lesser degree (especially in the enemy skills since the remake uses the FF4 SNES top right corner box style instead of the FF6 SNES entire box on top style). Different times.

"More and more, I've been thinking about returning to the soil."
"You know you're grown up when your joints ache like mine."

He's at Pipe Vault and you have to fight Piranha Plants to get him to appear, but he has high speed stat and likely to run away so you need to get speed boosting equipment on Geno to properly defeat it.
this game is very easy but I sure like to play this game with a challenge. maybe a no-KO challenge or no equipment change.
wait, is headbonk as a goomba attack due purely due to this game's .... first make?
No, that was in Paper Mario. In this game they did a rolling bite attack.
If I were a member of that collection of enemies, here are my thoughts:
“If I were to go all out, even though I would be incredibly challenging, I’m probably just another hurdle to whoever beats me. And I usually assume a solid number of players like more than 100,000 people would beat me. Yet if I were to know of a challenger so powerful that less than 100 players beaten it over the course of its release, I’m truly admired by its presence.”
Cool mine would be "man I wonder how many times I beaten them, and how many times they beat me"
“Where did you come from? Are you speedrunning?”
Since we're doing this. Here's mine "I don't get paid enough for dealing with you lot...actually I don't get paid, period. Therefore I will just give you the victory and go on vacation. Tell Smithy that I always thought he looked hilarious."
