- Should you spend all of the extra money and get a luxury car or a relatively standard compact car from a maker like Toyota? The question is truly, is a luxury car worth it? I'll walk through some Mercedes and Toyota cars today, compare the two, and show you where the bang for your buck comes in. We're talking cars and SUVs today, and we'll talk about styling, features, and more when comparing luxury cars to more standard vehicles.

I own two premium cars (Jaguar, BMW) and a non-premium one (Mazda). Depreciation has been high on the premium cars whereas the non-premium has been hit by an insignificant decrease in value. Plus, maintenance costs are considerably higher on my premium rides. That being said, I enjoy all of them because I definitely live by the 'life is too short to drive boring cars' mantra ☺.
Agreed. Just bought a 2023 BMW and we lost more money driving it off the lot than we have owning a 2016 Mazda3 for seven years. 🤣
I own a detailing business and detail out of a Mercedes GLK. Got 50 gallon water tank back there and everything... Love it to DEATH! I enjoy riding in style when I pull up to detail my clients vehicles!
My neighbor has three luxury vehicles. Maserati, Porsche and BMW X7. He doesn't drive each car enough times for the vehicles to break down. And even if they all break down the cost to repair is just a tiny fraction of his net worth. So the motto is just earn more so you can buy the cars you want to drive with no worry about depreciation and maintenance
Having owned luxury cars, no they are not worth the high cost of ownership UNLESS one has deep pockets and wealth. A nice home and money in the bank is far better.
I traded for a ‘12 Lexus IS-250 F Sport last year when my 3 year old Canyon’s computer shit the bed with no replacement in sight. I’m 50, drove newer American cars most of my life, but this is my all time favorite car. 100k miles and it’s just getting broke in. Do it!
They don't drive the same, Mercedes is such a special car, the smaller ones don't look good but they have good power and stability that surprises most people
Proud Lexus owner here! and I can say that nothing beats the quality build and long term performance of my 2005 ES330!!! Amazing
Absolutely
The ecvt's from toyota does NOT have any belts or pulleys that slip or break. They use planetary gearsets with electric motors driving the gears, along with the ICE. I've heard about taxi drivers with toyotas that have driven over 250.000 miles without any major issues with those drivetrains. I've owned one Audi a3 with dual clutch DSG transmission, that car was horrible to drive, jerking and shaking at lower speeds, also under hard acceleration. Yes it was quiet, and the interior quality was top notch, but that dsg gearbox was not very refined. It also had some issues with the turbo that never got fixed, they changed the turbo but the issue was still there. Not very impressive i must say. Glad i own a toyota now.
100 percent
Excellent points on many aspects!
You really hit the nail with depreciation and maintenance costs.
Further points on quality of the luxury car, with a performance advantage. Historically, I've gone with a depreciated luxury car. Like you, I own both .
But life is too short to drive boring cars.
Great points Thomas, buying a lightly used luxury car was often the approach we took to avoid a little depreciation and also enjoy much of the driving experience in the luxury vehicles. They all have a purpose, a regular car is OK to pile the miles on or use for rougher daily duty, the the luxury or performance cars are so worth it for those days that you really want to exploit the passion of the drive.
@@ECPP shared thoughts, yet, again.
I’ve had three Mercedes (2011 C300,2014 C300 ,2016 E350) and the only issue I have had is the driver door handle broke on the inside on two of them. 🤷🏾♀️ No mechanical issues with any of them! All three had a V6 engine. One had 160,000 miles before I sold it. Now BMW, that’s a different story………
Thanks looking to get a c300
Wow
Yes , it’s worthy if you can afford maintenance and repairs, I drive a Camry because I can’t afford an high performance luxury European car , but I work for a BIG dealer and definitely when you drive a luxury car either European or Japanese your opinion could change drastically regardless reliability !!!
Outstanding information made Mark.
It's all come down to opportunity cost. Toyota Camry offers tremendous value for my wallet and stays on the roads for many years. Sarcasm: for the price of a Mercedes you can buy two Toyota Camry. It's a win for the family!
While I don’t keep a car more than a couple of years, The reliability issue and repair costs just blow me away even though I wouldn’t keep it past the warranty but regular maintenance, week I don’t agree with their pricing. Lexus offers a stronger warranty, 48 months. We’ve had 7 Lexus s and never a problem, one is 21 years old. That speaks volumes to me 🏖️
Hahaha I have a 06 Camry everything works no car note either 😊
great video.. i'll drive my amg till it breaks and the next will likely be a toyota or lexus with aftermarket mods to make the car sound nicer. i've come to realize how much i love great exhaust tones and speed over any other feature of a car.
Well in third world countries a Camry or Accord can be considered as a luxury car because it's a luxury to own them that's why in other countries the Yaris has a sedan version🎹🎶
Great point that’s all relative indeed
a car is better than walking
@@GuitarsAndSynths exactly that's why I mentioned the Yaris's sedan version🎹🎶
Great videos. Love the channel
Glad you like them!
I am planning to buy a car this year and this is exactly the question I was asking. myself. Because both of them will cost you around 30- 35K Can Dollars (used). Therefore, for the same price I would rather go for the Benz. I could not imagine telling myself I could have bought a C class for that price; and I am driving a boring Camry.
We sold our Cadillac and our ML......we bought two 4 runners. Best thing we ever did............
Great
I liked your commentary on the ergonomics of the Benz. It’s an underrated feature that few mention.
I own a 2018 GLC 300, my first Benz, and the ergonomics of everything being within reach is amazing as an everyday driver. I would buy another Benz 10/10.
What??? I thought, "Has winter rolled in again? I thought is was summer by you now (May)", but then I saw Fri, March 10th on your cell phone. Hidden Easter eggs. LOL 😂😂 Situps and crunches, LOL again.
Haha indeed great catch Wayne. Cheers
The maintenance costs are the deal breaker for me.
Cheers
Is this an old video or it's still snowing in your area at the end of May?
When you bought the mercedes, was it the latest generation of C class or the previous generation. If it is the previous generation then was there a price reduction because a new model came and what is the best time to buy the current latest model c class.
By the time we factored in what options we wanted in a new Honda Pilot Elite, we were already in the starting price range of an Acura MDX.
There is no question that the gap between mainstream and luxury is a lot closer than it used to be. What used to be regarded as having a luxury interior and performance is now regarded as standard. As an example, my next car is Honda Civic Hybrid Advance. Comes with panoramic roof, 12 speaker Bose, heated and electric front seats, adaptive cruise, lake keep assist, keyless entry, reverse camera. These would have been considered luxury a few years ago.
On my w213 E-class, there's a button on the driver's door, which controls the passenger's seat heating.
That looks like some pretty aggressive weather there for the end of May.
Could be the new ice age coming 🙃
We get some interesting weather ibdeed
@@ECPP.. and I looked at the tiny pruces in the background... Look like if you go to the most northern part of Scandinavia...
In Finland they have a special world for snow falling in May.
But at least today we have some interesting hockey in the afternoon! So the "winter" isn't yet over...
But, not to forget, now I can work outside till 10 PM, or even to 10.30 PM, and the sun rise at 04 AM.
Here we really need daylight saving time...
For me it’s about performance. I drove Toyota Rav 4s for a long time, then I drove an X3 and I was shocked. If you think people are fools because they own a BMW I recommend driving one. I own 2 and would not go back because the performance difference is real.
You are totally right Marty, the performance alone in many cases makes it more obvious and that alone creates the value proposition.
Rav4 is definitely not about performance unless you’re a Lesbian 😜
@@melissasmess2773LMAO
Very well said.
I think I am a lesbian but I sure don't want a toymotor of any type or flavor
is it actually snowing over there during may?

Just buy a Lexus.
Great vehicles

Nope I’m good
Naah I'm straight
Lexus makes great vehicles but they are not reflective of my personality. They are somewhat boring and very common. Every other house has a Lexus sitting in the driveway. I will keep my Porsche Macan S and plan to buy another Porsche soon!
You sold me... I'll take the Toyota.
For a normal car brand, Toyota is the best choice. Pick Toyota over Honda, Ford, Volkswagen, etc. For luxury cars, Toyota's luxury division, Lexus, is the best option over Acura, Genesis and Infiniti. For a luxury brand, pick BMW over Mercedes-Benz and Audi.
Great points, thanks
That blue is absolutely beautiful! What year C300 is that? Is there one for 2023?
Thanks and yes I believe there is a color like that in late models. Ours is a 2018
Driving accross Canada and back i would trust more in the Toyota forsure
Yes
Luxery car is what it is luxery not for poor or people that can t take pay bills
That is true. Any car is a bit of a luxury for some folks.
come on Fam! You can’t compare a c 300 Benz to a Toyota and expect luxury even Benz fanatics would tell you that the c300 Benz is like the Nissan of all benz(s). If you really wanna ask if luxury vehicles are worth it, let’s go for the Benz s class… like the 550 etc.
I really like the Mercedes E350coupe , the c207 .
Would that be a healthy choice ?
Pretty chilly summer in AB
Love the scratch test.

Bmw dealer charged me $520 for (4) engine air filter and front and rear wiper blades change....damn
Does not feel very good. Ask me how I know.
An awesome AWD system, Traction Control, 300+hp and a comfortable seat is what I mostly need. I don’t use navigation or Bluetooth in my Mercedes.
That’s true we all have those elements that are important but many luxury cars have a bunch of different features

Are ECTi ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED TRANSMISSION with INTELLIGENCE better than CVT CONTROLLED VARIABLE INTELLIGENCE?
2 cars I'm actually considering . How I wish they came in manual. Forces me to go VW. Great Job!!
Subaru has many manual cars I believe as well.
VW the cheating company 💩
People that buy Toyota's given up on driving, to them a car is an appliance. Drive behind a Corolla or Camry and they have to be the most timid drivers around, well below the speed limit and have to make sure the coast is clear for at least a kilometre before they make a right or left turn. Can't think of a more boring car company than toyota, not the same company that was around in the 80's and 90's when you had Supra, MR2, Celica, even was a GTA Corolla. Yes they are making strides to add excitement but other than the Gazoo Corolla, everything else is made by someone else (BMW and Subaru)
I just bought a 2023 Camry SE Nightshade. Prior, I had a BMW 325i, then a BMW X5, followed by a Lexus GS 350.
Now, that I'm older, I've decided, I needed a basic car just to get me to/from work. I really didn't need a luxury car in my life. Well, 4 days into my Camry, I'm seeing more and more how cheap looking and feeling my car is. The inside is basically plastic and pleather. It's really cheap.
However, I didn't know it had a CVT engine. Mine has ECTi - is that better than CVT's? It is a non-turbo. I thought the 4-cylinder engines like on the new Accord were CVT's.
Anyway, the Camry seems reliable. Its the reason why I bought it and the cost to maintain was important too; it was inexpensive to service. I was paying in the thousands to get my prior cars serviced. I have this feeling, I will only keep this Camry for a year or two and trade it in before the warranty is up for the new 2024 Tesla Y, which is what I originally sought after. I just didn't want the 2023 Tesla Y knowing the 2024 is coming soon, so I bought the Camry since I really needed to get rid of my 16-year old Lexus. Or I might trade it in for the 2024 Toyota 4Runner. I am after the redesign of both the Tesla or 4 Runner.
Don't worry, toyota doesn't use a CVT like described here it doesn't have the same issues. That said it does have different ones, just not ones that will leave you on the side of the road (known to 'lurch forward' a bit sometimes at stop/go).
@@BK-hp8cj Thank you. I feel better. I'm actually getting fond of my Camry and its growing on me. I thought I could never humble myself to drive a Camry after driving 2 BMW's and a Lexus, but I am really liking it and have no regrets.
We recently switched to two used german sedan instead of the avalon and is350.
Thing is nowadays they're all sophisticated and made of plastic. Just avoid the bad years and known issues...
Your neighbor satellite dish need to go it's 2023 pls help these folks 😂
Haha, I agree on the dish
I’ve owned a Lexus and it was a great car but just wasn’t for me now I have a Beamer with a good warranty and I’m a lot happier now. even tho I know the car may not last as long as a Lexus I don’t keep my cars for that long anyways usually 2-3 years so it’s all good
Thanks for sharing

I think luxury cars are worth it but that's just my opinion. If I didnt have the means I would never buy my M5 competition but since I have the means for it, I don't want to drive around in some boring Toyota.

Toyota owner: Practical, and altruistic with an internal locus of control concerning their lives without an egocentric ethos. Confident, pragmatic with depth in their character, logical. Has savings account. Luxury car owner (particularly BMW); external locus of control, which is counteracted by faux expression, a "facade". Demonstrative constructs of self-importance. Put some crash test dummies in each and run these into a wall and then tell me they are comparable. Also, if you hate cars and driving, then by all means get a Toyota...but if you like design, style and panache and enjoy driving and handling - then there is no substitute for a Jaguar or BMW. Comparing a Camry to a Jaguar XE or BMW 3 Series is like comparing a 130 LBS American Akita that hunts bears and will shred coyotes with a single snap of its jaws and shake of its anvil sized head connected to a 28 inch neck to a 60 LBS Labradoodle that is a perfectly nice family dog but will cut and turn tail at the first hint of a bear or coyote nearby. One is bred for fearlessness and combat and the other is a non-aggressive lovely companion dog. The point is that I don't think anyone would ever actually cross shop an XE or 3 Series with a Lexus, let alone, a Camry. The latter are for people who want to drive 55 mph in a 75 MPH zone.
I’m a Lexus guy through and through 🏖️

Why not compare a brand new Mercedes and not a 5 year old one?!
You are funny Lexus after 5 years will be significantly worth way and I mean significantly way more than a Benz or BMW. Also your statement on Toyota and Lexus are equal is not true. Lexus is more plush and way more quite. Yes I know the RAv 4 and the NX share the same suspension but there is more to a Lexus than just that. Yes The Rav 4 is a great deal, but why not get a NX because it's a rav4 with better amenities.
Luxury, especially today’s Mercedes, can not compete with reliability of other lower priced imports. Where is Mercedes ranked #24 to 30? Terrible- might as well get you a Chinese Jaguar or Range Rover! The luxury cars are for suckers, fortunately for the manufacturers, there are plenty in today’s societal ignorance. It’s like buying Rolex for a watch that keeps good time… Don’t get me wrong, I buy Rolex for resale: they hold their value and make money on the grey market, but are a poor excuse for a watch. “Luxury “ car owners make me smile: even the average or below average “Joe” can make a lot of money.

This comparison is way off . The Toyota is a base model vs a premium Mercedes model . A fair comparison would have been a Toyota TRD/ XLE v s that Mercedes model or Toyota vs c class Mercedes model .
