Malaysia on July 20, 2024, installed a motorcycle-riding billionaire sultan as its new king in lavish ceremonies for a post seen as a ballast in times of political crises. The coronation ceremony for King Sultan Ibrahim, 65, at the National Palace in Kuala Lumpur followed his oathtaking in January as the country’s 17th monarch.

Every 5 years,one of the sultan/king from those of 9 states is elected by Royal Council to become Yang Dipertuan Agong or King of Malaysia
Because the federation of Malaysia consists 13 states out of 9 states of Sultanate, under the independence the constitution was drafted that way, to have a rotation of King every 5 years.
To be simplified, Malaysia is the only constitutional monarchy nation that have rotational monarchy system
Unlike in the UK, Malaysia has the world only, "Democratic Constitutional Monarchy" where the Council of Malay State Rulers elect one among themselves to hold the office of the King of Malaysia, every 5 years. It has worked very well for Malaysia, in term of providing a stable and progressive Democratic Constitutional System of Government, especially in recent years of Political instability.

Basically Malaysia kinda similar with USA as our own states were self govern before the independence and we decide to unified under one federal government after weve got our independence from the british, that explains why our states had flags. No one can instigate a military coup against the nation and has full control of the military when he declared a nationwide or state emergency. Laws that made by the parliament can only be implemented with the approval from the King. And so on.

State throne is for life. Federal throne is rotational. No other equivalent system in the world. Closest western equivalent is maybe Holy Roman Empire
