NARROW ESCAPE - our narrowboat life adventure. In this episode, we set off from the visitor moorings at Rishton on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The weather forecast is appalling and it's not too long before it starts to chuck it down! From this elevated canal, we get to see some lovely scenery but also have to tackle weed issues and three darned manual swing bridges, which, as I come to find out, are a right royal pain in the derriere when you are single handing! At least at the end of the cruise the fire goes on and all my sodden clothing can dry out.
JOURNEY - Rishton to Hapton
CANALS - LEEDS AND LIVERPOOL CANAL

Thanks for that "shout-out!" Chubby rain it is!
You’re most welcome! When you said it all those months ago I thought “I shall remember that quote”.!
Just discovered your channel. Great videos and now a subsribr. Look forward to watching more. Thanks.
Thanks for coming onboard! 👍
Good evening fellow Josh owners, those items on the side of the canal denoting the middle of its length look to me to be giant fire guards. I bet the fire they were made for would keep you warm! Those swing bridges look, well, interesting ! Enjoy your travels. Cheers, Peter.
Thanks Peter.
Now you mention it they do rather resemble fire guards don’t they!!
Great video as always many thanks hope everything is OK with you two take care xx😊
Thanks David. All good here thanks!
Hi Elliot It seems as though Sue has missed out on all the Fun you have had !!!!!!
Thanks Ramsey. Sue wasn’t exactly sorry to have missed this one!!
The weather sounds bad enough in a house so it must 10x worse in a narrowboat so please keep safe and hope you and josh have a safe cruise ❤
Thanks Sheila. This cruise was an eye opener for a couple of reasons. Thanks for the well wishes!!!
😍
Squirrel and dumplings! One of the best meals that I've ever had. Long story there involving a friends grandparents back in the early 1970's. May GOD Bless their souls, forgive them their sins and bring them to everlasting life. Amen.
Oh my word. I’ve not heard of someone eating squirrel but then I’ve eaten snails, frogs legs and sheep brain in the past so why not… 😱🤩
I single handed that stretch 7 years ago, at that time those off side moorings for the bridges didn't exist. It was bow up to the bridge and tie on. Climb onto the bridge and open it. Pull the boat through and then grab the stern rope and tie the boat onto the opposite side of the bridge, close it and hope you could pull the boat back enough to climb over the bridge and get back on at the stern - all good fun!! And, the rain, well it was persisting it down 🙂. Have a good week, ballast moving on the project boat tomorrow, hope my back holds up!
Thanks K
What a palaver!
Good luck with the ballast!
Swing Bridge saga for the single handed boater, you'll not break the man who goes by the name of Captain..... Elliott... 😅 But the rain might.... 😮
Terrible weather 😪
But you spotted the KF ❤
I must say you managed to survive really well and no slips on the decking landings, needs to be covered with chicken wire and nailed down for safety reasons it's CRT nightmare 😉
I've not found a windlass or vandal key on my travels out magnet fishing yet. If I did, I'd pass em onto you for safe keeping lol. You managed really well.
Hope you dried off nice nice nice.
Keep Josh clean for Sue's return 😅
All the best kev the Brinklow kayaker 😊
Thanks Kev. What a day!!
Subscribed to the new channel just now.
Perfect thanks, and please make sure to give both videos a thumbs up! 👍
Thanks again.
Great bit of single handed boating . Swing bridges can be a nightmare and how long would it take for CRT to put up safe signs and landings. Safe trip solo and keep warm.
Thanks Tessa 👍👍
Hi guys. Great vlog as always. Already subscribed to your new channel. Keep up the great work. See you soon. Lee& Di. X❤
Thanks you two 😍
Hope life on Ceejay is going well?
Good vlog has always strange without Sue but guess was for you as well mythere was a lot of rain hope you not got a chill tc now from us the oldies 👍👍🤗🤗
Great safe work out there !
Thanks John 👍👍
Not the best day to be single handed, but you got through Elliott. Agree with you that CRT could make life easier if they added a bit more signage on the swing bridges Thanks for the video. Hi to Sue. Until next time . Stay safe.
Thanks Margaux!!
Sue says Hi right back 😍
Nice Hat ,but in rainy weather you need a waterproof one, wool soakes up the water like a spong, any how that was a hard solo cruise, with those swing bridges,CRT should get on the case.Lets hope your next vlog has a lot of happy moments
I’ve got a leather one I would usually use in the rain but it was bitterly cold so I went for wool to keep my ears warm 🤣
I don’t know what it is about the lining of this wooly hat but it’s yet to soak through to my head although it needs a good wringing and drying out afterwards for sure!!
Catch you on the next one 👍
Well, that was largely uneventful. You didn't fall in or sink the boat, just a bit of weed round the prop. So a good trip really. Remember, you often have to experience the rain to enjoy the 🌈.
Missing Sue, as are you no doubt. ❤
She’ll be back soon Harry !
😍
"Slippy!" That's a term I prefer to use! Oyi, we've got something in common besides our love of boating!
🤣🤣
I know just how you feel Elliott 😂 just had a weekend hire in the midlands. Had some nice weather but also had it soaking wet and had to keep cruising as the boat had to be returned on time. The wind was also rather strong, blowing the boat out or pinning us against the side 😂. We had a couple of swing bridges too, which were difficult for my wife to move, and as you can imagine it was very difficult for me to get to her and help. All good fun though 👍 glad you coped ok on your own, lovely views from your mooring.
Wowzers Paul - that sounds like quite the trip but when you’ve gotta move, you’ve gotta move!
The swing bridges can be such a pain! It still sounds like you had a good time though?
@@NarrowEscape1 loved it mate 👍 cheers
Nice 1 Elliot…
Thanks for that!
Nice one. Shame about all the rain though!
Thanks Mishka. Yeah, on a sunny dry day that experience would have been better but hey ho, that’s boating and you’ve just got to get on with it!
@@NarrowEscape1although not pleasing for you , Elliott, rain, in fact it was enjoyable, often this is not shown due to preventing camera damage or thinking that bright skies are better, thank you and safe journeying, many thanks.
@@woodyjenny6353 Thanks Jenny 👍
Don’t tell anyone but I have a theory that some vloggers say that they aren’t going to film because of damage to the camera and then they immediately moor the boat, hide inside and wait for a sunnier day before setting off again 🤣🤣 Got a few suspects in mind 🤩
😊
👍👍
What a nightmare of a day. Bet you were so relieved to get the fire going and put your feet up.
You couldn’t be more right Nigel!! My teeth were chattering and everything was sodden. I was practically hugging the stove!
Good afternoon fellow Josh owners, I'm just checking to see if you are both ok? Its been a while since we saw anything from you. Take care, Peter.
Hey there fellow Josh owner. Thanks for checking in on us! 👍
We’re OK thanks, just so much on we’re meeting ourselves coming!
Our first Explore the UK is now out, and the next Narrow Escape one will be Tuesday.
All go go.
😍
I watch a lot of youtubers and am trying to get a channel going myself. It occurred to me early on how simple it is to just subscribe, hit thumbs up and join in the conversation. I love the boat channels and they all vary quite a bit. I can see the thought you put into what you're doing and that pays of for the viewer. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for that comment - we certainly try!
The big thing we think people can do is the thumbs up/like. It’s free and easy to do but perhaps people don’t know what a difference it can make - we didn’t really. Anyway we’ll bang on about it for a couple more videos before seeing what happens and what difference it has made.
What is the subject of your own channel out of interest? Is it in conception stage or is it live now?
Oh I'm just tinkering, I have a love of music and electronic synthesizers so after retiring I thought I'll start filming to get myself going really. Doing something unique such as what you're doing it's a requirement it seems.
@@RetireMentalityChallengedsounds interesting. Feel free to share the channel name if you’d like to?
Xx
Thanks Edward!
Hi, love following your Narrowboat videos, why have you returned to the L&L when all year we have heard bad things about it?
Hi Dale. The vast, vast majority of the L&L canal is lovely. The scenery, the people etc. Unfortunately there are a few isolated bad bits like Burnley and the Wigan lock flight but once you’ve done those you are into nice, nice, nice.
We had to make a plan for winter quite early on in the year and we wanted to spend some of it around the curlies/S bends near to East Marton so back onto the L&L it meant. Sadly unforeseen stoppages etc then happened.
So, just to reiterate we think the Leeds and Liverpool Canal is fantastic!
I really enjoyed this video. Did Sue make your hat Elliott.
Thanks Judith!!
She didn’t but well spotted! We bought it a while ago in the Lake a district from a craft fair from the Tibetan stall. Nice isn’t it?
@@NarrowEscape1 It is nice just what you need in this weather
Slippy deck? Put some fresh black paint on, spread some sand and add another layer of paint. End of slippy deck. I know it's not yours but the C.R.T. could learn a lesson here.
They could indeed!
I was subscried but after vid i notice i was not after hmm wonder if they take you off if to many
Not sure Dawn and perhaps it’s easy to just swipe a screen or whatever and unsubscribe yourself but hopefully you’ve fixed it now! 👍
Hi Elliot,
Just wish to confirm something. Would you like to discuss some ideas about the other channel?

Yeah but don’t worry - we are setting up a new email address hopefully today which we can share with everyone, so we’ll post that up instead. Just wanted to run something past you as an ‘overseas watcher’. 👍
Hey, good day to you two. I'll be looking forward to the new email address. Love to help you guys out.
