I'm a brit, and not religious. I like Christmas as a tradition to brighten up the winter a little bit. Also, the "Christmas spirit" of trying to be nicer to people than you normally would be is something I can support. It would be great if we could be considerate of each other all year, but one month is better than nothing.
    Happy Christmas

When pre pandemic I was researching about visiting Japan over Christmas, I knew about the tradition of kfc in Japan for Christmas, but it never dawned on me everything would also be open as usual. I love the fact you take down your decorations straight afterwards, that would be my ideal 😂. Our celebrations start Christmas Eve and go through Boxing Day.
    Very interesting, thank you.

I always find it interesting how some of the most patriotic people I’ve met are foreigners. I guess it kinda makes sense since they actually want to be here by choice rather than being born here. But it always makes me feel better and luckier that I live here when other people choose to be here. I always think to myself, what’s so great about the UK? But if people like Shizuka are here, then it’s got to have something good going for it

I recently started following your posts. Your approach to moving to a new culture reminds me of the chance my wife took some 45 years ago by staying in the US and marrying me after finishing grad school. For years she worked for an audit firm and visited many small towns where Asians were seldom seen. But her humor and willingness to try new things made her popular with everyone. At our age now, we are like the “folks who live on the hill.”
Sorry about your loss and you have my best wishes for your future.

Love watching these videos. I was watching a walking tour around a Christmas Market in Tokyo and was surprised to hear all the usual Christmas Carols that we in the UK are familiar with. Wonderful to see all the decorations on the trees. I have always had an artificial tree although I must admit I don't bother much anymore. But then my Christmas Day present this year will be listening to a recorded acoustic concert from Japanese Rock Band, Band Maid. The World is becoming smaller. Have a great day whatever you decided to do.

There are very strict rules in the UK about the right of workers to have a good work/leisure balance and many countries who do not have this find it a great inconvenience .It is not that people need to shop all day and night, what they want is the right to choose when they do it. But this means that others cannot enjoy time with their families or that places have to employ more staff to stay open and the price of goods increases for everyone ,then that is also an inconvenience

  • @davetdowell

I just wanted to echo the sentiment of so many others here, it's good to see you seemingly doing so well, and back posting videos.
Oh and Christian claims to Christmas are tenuous at best, it's the Pagan festival of Yule, that Christians repurposed to celebrate the birth of their saviour who was most likely born some months later. An early form of recycling.

Really good to see regular posts, and posts which make me reflect on my own country and British traditions. As a boy, growing up in Australia I often spent Christmas on the beach, which now seems strange to me, but KFC in Japan may be one I'll have to try, especially if I can have a tub of Potato and Gravy, I stupidly really miss this from Australia! Nice to learn a little about Japan and all things Christmas, and hopefully one day, you will get to experience Christmas in Britain once again, I am sure you will be welcomed with open arms, and a cup of tea or two!

I would recommend reading A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens if you haven't, it really encompasses the Christmas Spirit that many of us in Britain feel at Christmas, and it explains why Christmas is such an important holiday for us. Great video, as always Shizuka-san! And yes, that's a lovely Christmas tree! ;-) Many years ago, I took my daughter to Japan to stay with Japanese friends for Christmas & New Year, and we took various gifts from the UK, such as Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, and Christmas crackers. As we went to board the plane, I was asked the usual questions about items in my luggage, and then they asked if I had any Christmas crackers! I'd never been asked this before, and of course I did, so I said yes. Then they told me I had to remove them from my suitcase because of the gunpowder... or I could just remove the 'bangs' (the little cardboard strips containing the gunpowder), so my daughter and I pulled all the cardboard strips out of the crackers, put the crackers back in the suitcase, and they were allowed on the plane. When we used the crackers on Christmas day with our friends, we had to make the bang noise ourselves! But I didn't realise they couldn't be imported into Japan; I just assumed they weren't allowed on the plane.

Christmas was Hi-jack by the church, its true name is Yule Tide, Yule tide lasted from the 21st Dec to 6th January and the celebration is a pagan, Yule tide was a time of peace, no battles would take place during this period, The christmas tree, holly, ivy, mistletoe are to celebrate Mother Nature and the Greenman, The early Christian suppressors, banned Yule tide, no one was allowed to celebrate this period for a number of centuries, but the people carried on in secret, In the end the church see that they could not stop the people so, they allowed it under their controlled and named Yule Tide' Christmas knowing to well people over time will for get what it really was about, the Tree was reintroduced by Prince Albert (Queen Victoria German husband), In 1914 the christmas truce saw the last time there was to be no battles on Yule tide, when the British open fire on British troops and German troops having a bit of fun in no-man-land, the turkey became popular in the 1940s, an American idea introduce. And then in the 1980s, Christmas became highly commercialise.

The U.K. also has a tradition to bring the New Year into a household. People seem to follow the lines of going out of the back door of a house a few minutes before midnight to let the old year out, then being let in through the front door just after midnight to let the new year and a fresh beginning, in. This is done whilst holding coal, possibly a glass of alcohol. Some people carry food as well, all representing prosperity and health.
