    Hi if you're reading this, I just restrung my first electric guitar, and I have some lessons for ya:
    1. make sure you dont do more than 3 winds around the post, I found out that my high E breaks after 3 :/
    2. MAKE SURE TO STRETCH YOUR STRINGS!
    3. make sure it's a bit loose when you enter the string through the post, you dont want it to be very tight, you want to be able to stretch the string upwards, if it's tight and you try to tune it it will split.
    4. you can do it, it's not impossible I promise c: Edit: I have a stratocaster, and I used 10 gauge d'addario strings

    Can't thank you enough for this video. When I asked my guitar-playing friend how to fix my broken strings, he made it sound like it was some big ordeal. This made it doable in less than half an hour (all 6 strings).
    One thing that 'might' be worth mentioning, some guitars (like mine, apparently) have those holes through which you thread the string in the back of the body, not on the front like in the video. Either way, this was greatly helpful, thank you!

    I don't know if anybody else mentioned it, but a general rule of thumb for how much slack you would need is you would measure to the next tuning peg. that should be enough to make enough revolutions around the head of the peg that you're running the string through to not have too much wrapped around the peg (which looks hideous 🤣) or too little to keep it tightly wound.

      He means that you don't want to wind the "tuning machine" towards the body of the guitar. Wind it the other way, just the way that he doing. If you look carefully at his hand, you'll see which way he's turning it.

    • @jadelaney
      @jadelaney Před 3 lety +10

      He actually means each following string winds should be underneath each other I think

    • @robertbailey7425
      @robertbailey7425 Před 3 lety +1

      From the hole in the post, each wind should be below the next so that you don't have string above the hole. Start at the hole and make each wind a little closer to the headstock.

    Maybe a good tip for beginners aswel is that you'll have to do it one by one! If you just cut through your strings or loosen all of them up too fast the pressure change will be high and not good for your guitar.

    I haven't strung up a guitar in years and used this video to re-learn it. I found I was using way too may wraps. A person commented that a good way to measure how much string is to use the distance to the next tuner. That gave me almost exactly 3 wraps on each string. Thanks for the video. i would just like to say in my own opinion: you shouldnt add "dummies" to the name. i know its giving a meaning as in for people who dont understand but its still not right. Nobody is dumb and nobody is smart, stop labeling people as for instence if someone called you stupid you would be a little upset but if someone called you smart you would be proud. Is smart the #1 label you wanna go by? I think not. As I should say again, This is MY OWN opinion.

      Here's the thing Bear, The term "for dummies" is associated with those yellow books. It's been around for so long, that using it lets people know exactly what kind of video they are gonna find. Even beginner videos might assume you know the basic things. "For dummies" means it is the most basic, beginner video possible. I'm not sure why you would come here just to find something that offends you.
