Leaky Vintage Floor Jack Restoration (Hein Werner)

- My dad has had this car jack for years. He bought it used and apparently the previous owner made some interesting modifications to it... They used to use these things to re-bend vehicle frames back into shape after an accident which put a lot of stress on them. Anyway it was leaking pretty bad and wouldn't lift up a car anymore so I decided I'd rebuild it for him and make a restoration video out of it.
I started this restoration project a few years ago, but after I tore it apart I realized I'd need a lathe to actually fix it up properly. It sat in a storage bin for years in pieces until I got a lathe and enough courage to try and put it all back together. Sorry the video ended up being a feature length film... I couldn't really cut it down much more and I don't like multi-part series.

I rebuilt these beasts for 25 years and am glad to say you've done a 98% excellent job.
My nitpicks are -
You put 29 ball bearings in the caster races, should have been only 28 (they need a little room to roll around easy).
From the factory all the pivot points, wheels and saddle stem came fully greased.
At '25:10' the rubber plug for the check valve is installed upside down, if it's not leaking now, it soon will be...
And finally - The saddle should have been painted white.
That's pretty neat! Did you do it as a job in your workshop or was it a refurbishing job at a company? How much profit do you get?
@@rasmidtan I agree with you agreeing with him.
@@Samlol23_drrich I agree with you, agreeing with him, agreeing with him

This would take me 7 years to put back together. Awesome job man.
Take a bunch of pictures while you go, and put hardware in plastic bags clearly marked.
Crazy it only took him an hour
Would've taken me 7 minutes...I would call this guy and let him do it!! ROFLMAO 😂
@@xXAussieSkillzXx it will took me 7 years to figure out how to start the job.

A"simple" floor jack with 40 plus parts. Incredible work. Well done.
One of the very best restoration videos I have seen on the internet. And the camera work, and showing detail was absolutely first rate. Excellent video!
This guy and my mechanics are my favorites
That logo plate at the end just turns this into a piece of art! Amazing talent
Talent? That's experience.
To bad it is upside down now :P
A spectacular job of restoring every single piece in this massive project. What is even more impressive to me though, is the masterpiece of video editing done to make this process look so smooth and seamless.
this is my restoration
czcams.com/video/JiYG-32GATY/video.html
He could have edited it down from a damn hour lol. Most channels edit their work down to under half an hour. This was more of a tutorial than a well edited restoration. Plus he screwed up the plaque by putting it on upside down haha
@@Mr1121628 I hope you are joking? I think he did an amazing job, No fluff, He's just doing the job, why edit it?
@@JH-zy1dj NO $#!T !! That thing took WEEKS !! I know what it takes to do clean-up,and it's a Bitch ! It's the WORST part of ANY job. Best restoration I have seen. Not simply derust, paint and call it done. Magnificently done! Concerning the jack itself: as George Gobel famously used to say, "you don't hardly get them kind no more."
Remarkable. One wouldn't think restoring a floor jack would be so intense. So many parts and so many skilled things to do.
The re making the logo plate is amazing! I was stumped the whole way thinking it was going to come out worse. Great job!!
That was next level for me. Total game changer.
I never quite understand the acid etching process..... Thanks for showing it to us!
@@johndonlan5956 same here John, I'd love to use it in my projects. Chemical magic.
It was akin to watching Bob Ross paint over something and thinking, "Aw snap he ruined it" but he comes out clutch in the end!
I think he put the logo plate upwards down back on. Nonetheless, a perfect restoration job! Thanks for sharing!
Oh man what a complex construction! I never thought that a floor jack would consist of so many parts. 😵💫
Amazing job!

In agreement on the many parts! Holy cow. After disassembly, If I got that far, next stop would have been Harbor Freight for a new one. Amazing skills.
This is great. I haven't been able to sit down and watch an hour long program in a long time. I would absolutely prefer that jack over anything else on the modern market today. You done a fine job and I appreciate you taking the time to tape it and show us.
I can't believe what I'm seeing!!! I've been use this identical jack at my dad's shop since I was about 20+yrs old! I recognized it right away. I'm going on 61 now, and I still use that jack!! WHOLLY SHIT I'M OLD! And wholly sh#t, it still works with no leaks! (Always kept it maintained since new) I hope someone appropriates this comment. There's lots of memories with dad at the shop, every time I use that jack👍😊 What a good flash back.
Watching this brought back 20 years of memories of having repaired dozens of these as an AS in the Navy. They beating they took on non skid surfaces where the worst, challenged me to find sources for replacement parts. Wasn't thrilled about weight testing them either!
That looks like it could handle 3 tons.
Melinda - I heard that Non Skid is murder and can really ruin your day if you happen to trip and fall on it.
@@wes11bravo Yes, when it's a relatively new coating, it's easy to trip when wearing shoes with a competing tread, like boots and sneakers.
Best I’ve seen on these “restoration” sites. EXCELLENT work my man!
I think this dude is the best one. Don't u think?
This is YT
First I've seen of his chanel. He has included most commonly used processes and more. 9/10 in my mind. A perfect score only if he included some electroplating as well. Not that this particular project really called for any though.
I've seen better
Well, there is” my mechanic”
But …some say he’s a God, not a man
*_Never thought anyone could recover. The most incredible work of the best_*
The meticulous restoration of each component in this extensive undertaking is truly awe-inspiring. However, what truly captivates me is the exceptional artistry displayed in the video editing, which flawlessly portrays a smooth and seamless progression of the restoration process.
This gentlemans dedication to a old car jack is legendary!
Stayed for the whole hour. I like to restore things too. People commenting here have no idea how much labor this took to restore and how much it took to film it all and edit it for this video. Awesome job. 🇺🇲
When you undid the bearing to the wheel on your vicegrip I couldn't help but smile. Damn fine engineering when you find pristine bearing marbles despite the entire tool being covered in decades of grime and grease. Like, wow. No wonder I love this older built-to-last stuff
One of the best floor jacks my dad has owned. It was beat to hell and used many many times throughout the years and still worked every single time. But that thing weighed a ton!
Thanks for the reply.

They basically used billet parts back then. That's a $500+ jack in today's money.
Agreed. I have one and it seriously weighs a freaking ton.
Simply BEAUTIFUL!!!! My dad bought me one just like it in the late seventies, when I was first starting my professional life as a technician. You sir are a amazing craftsman!! You actually can teach Hein-Werner a thing or two!!
My dad has this floor jack and I grew up using it. Great restoration!
Never knew there were so many parts in a lowly floor jack. Nicely done
Me as well!!!
I was just thinking the same! 🤣
It looks like minimal parts till you start taking it apart
Can you imagine what it must have been like when they were designing this floor jack? Such a simple functioning machine having so many intricate parts!
Can you imagine how much it would cost to have him do this to your floor jack? Be like a $5000 jack😂😂😂
When I got hired to work at Ford in Dearborn Stamping and first walked onto the press floor my jaw hit the ground. The exact same thing happened when I watched this video. Excellent Job!!
I once rebuilt a very same old non functioning floor jack.
Thought I would save a few bucks ,wrong and hours were many.
Soon after rebuild one of my sons found a lots newer heavy great as new jack for 20 bucks.
Yet that rebuild served me well for years.
Best of all it was mine who rebuilt it.
Good mind sorter

First time watching your channel, and was amazed at the detail you put into this... I'll definitely subscribe and watch all your other videos!
Also, I don't think most people mind that the video was long... With such detail and multitudes of parts, it's definitely worth the time!
You sir are a master of all trades.
That brings back memories. I started in a garage when I left school in 1986. The jack shown here is near enough identical to the first jack I ever used. Same colour even.
It looks so well built that you'd think it could lift far more than it's rated for.

It is the most incredibly over engineered piece of jackery that I have ever seen. Only the Germans would build it like that.
Your attention to detail is immaculate, sir. You are an artist
Have watched hundreds of restoration like this from dozens of chanels here. This one definitely fits into the gold standard category. Beautifully filmed and refurbished.
You are a true craftsman of your trade....amazing , awesome job! Your dad is a blessed man to have you for a son.
Nice work! You have thoroughly convinced me that it is not worth the effort to fix my broken jacks. I can now, without guilt, send a couple of old soldiers I have laying around to recycling and go purchase replacements.

Thanks for sharing the restoration process with us. Like what you paying attention to the detail. I consider myself as a very detailed man but seem not detailed enough after watching your clip. You are very handy man as well. Seemed like no object that could stop you 😂
And my Wife thinks I over do everything and I’m just a Wee bit on the type “A” obsessive side when it comes to my tools and restorations ! Absolutely beautiful Restoration on that wonderful Hein Werner
Floor jack. In my belief arguable Hein Werner along with Walker the best quality hydraulic jacks ever made (Then, when made in the USA) Chinese Jacks ? Junk, IMO.. But be sure not to forget to double up on the jack stands for non USA floor jacks, they will slow leak at times, which anyone who cares not to die under a vehicle should use without fail, USA or off shore purchased and used ! Be safe
You're a jack of all trades.. :) Regarding back filing, it has been proven to actually improve your cut to back file as you remove chips from the teeth. Also it keeps it sharp, so that is for all the ones thinking it is bad. It's been 35 years since I went took mechanics, but some things (but far from all) I don't forget. Thanks for the great video!
What I would love to have as I'm watching this is subtitles explaining the different parts as they are being worked on and what is being done. Especially in the beginning disassembly phase I felt as those I was getting whipped around from one piece to another without the context of where that piece was within the larger structure or what the purpose used to be.
Even so, I really appreciate the effort that has gone into this video. :)
Everything on this job was amazing but at the end making an new manufacture plate I have never seen before in a restoration video. That is really amazing !! GOOD JOB !

An engineer's nightmare! Lots of intricate parts to deal with, especially with the hydraulic assembly. You did a knockout job with this old floor jack! I bet if this was sent in to my mechanics to restore, he would have a field day with it. Lots of "I make a new one" segments, and using his lathe to the extreme! 😁
I have a Hein Werner very similar of my dad's... who passed away in 1978... he had a body shop...I still use it occasionally doing oil changes etc... loved the video and spectacular job!!!

If you do a project like this make sure to soak all the replacement seals in jack oil for a few hours before assembly. Pretty much all hydraulic seals you want to pre soak with the proper oil.

what an expert job I especially like the expert work with the lathe thank you now im going to shop around for a lathe
Thanks, for the detailed accounting of your re-build. I have the same jack and it was great just using your film as guidance. I didnt have to replace any of the bolts that you did, nor did I bead blast, but I did order the seal kit from ebay, took my jack apart, installed the new seals, now the jack works pefectly. I know the jack is rated for 1.5 tons, but given its 5/16 steel plate construction and heavy axel, it seems like it could handle much more. It is a very heavy jack but the basket is nice and large and the ball bearing wheels make it roll around like breeze. No other jack made is like the HW. Hopefully others will keep theirs going through this kind of maintenance.
