1918 Structo Wind Up Tank Restoration Motorized Army Tank Toy Rare Antique clockwork

  • I purchased this 1918 Structo Wind Up Tank on eBay November of 2021 for $166.42 after shipping. This thing was extremely rough... just the way I like them! Every piece of this tank was rusted and corroded solid. I had to cut the axle shafts just to get the wheels off and the axles out of the hubs. The tracks were entirely rusted through, the clockwork motor was seized and had a broken spring. I knew after disassembling this poor tank; that I would need to remake the majority of it from scratch if it was to ever come alive again. I enjoyed making parts on the CNC mill and new Precision Matthews 1440TL lathe as well as my favorite new toy, the Senfeng Fiber Laser. The most challenging part of this entire build was recreating the wheels, I originally wanted to stamp them, however I found the stamp was not going to work, so I created a die to spin the metal into on the lathe which worked wonderfully after about 20+ tries. The tracks were extremely fun to create and were pretty simple outside of the shear amount of work it took to make 80 individual track links all identical and fit them correctly so they freely move, I don't have an exact number but I believe to have somewhere around 35-40 hours into just the tracks, with design, testing, peening and polishing. I wanted to nickel plate each track link in house, then I realized, doing each of the 80 links individually would take 15 minutes of plating each for a total of 1200 minutes or 20 hours if I didn't' loose anytime at all. I quickly realized that was not going to happen, so I cut the track links out of a mirror polished stainless steel sheet with laser film, this cut down the time considerably and gave me a very similar finish. I spent four weeks trying to make my own clock springs from scratch and ultimately failed, if the video wasn't extremely long I would have loved to show you how I went about this. I need to do some more research on how they were originally formed. Overall, I really love how this Army Tank turned out and look forward to my next project to be a smaller one. Thank you!

      I was a bit hasty when I said this was a "real restoration". It's good work, but not a "restoration", it's basically a "cloning" with all those new parts that were used. Can't really call this a restoration.

    What amazes me the most here is the trouble the original manufacturer went to, to produce this toy. This wasn't a cheap toy to make especially considering that there weren't any cnc machines in 1918. The fit and tolerance of the original parts were of high standard. A high end toy for the day.

    • @skyraider87
      @skyraider87 Před 11 měsíci +15

      It really is nuts when you think about it. Parts of the process were still probably done by hand. The only thing I can think of that would have been automatically machined would have been the gears, because at that point there were automatic gear mills. If you've never been to the American Precision Museum in Vermont, I highly recommend it

    • @trevorpom
      @trevorpom Před 10 měsíci +16

      @@skyraider87 They did have mass production, it was pretty much the end of WW1 so a lot of companies that were set up for arms manufacture went back to making their original products but, unlike today, they didn't have injection molding plastic and cnc machines. Everything was either stamped or machined individually. There was a lot of manual labor involved in making this toy.

    The sad decay and expectation of death's slow decay interrupted by the unexpected discovery by this channel's owner.
    The fear and uncertainty of the refurbishment process… the confusion of so much activity, and then the Pride, shock, and gratitude of the rebirth.
    It is this unexpected blessing of a chance at a whole new life that I imagine I can see winking back at me from the gleaming surface of the final product. A silent but heartfelt gratitude that mirrors our own thankfulness for a childhood of love. 🥰🥰🥰

    Only 30 seconds in and I simply can't resist to comment already. I absolutely love the gorgeous green tow truck. I nevertheless guess the next restoration is a bigger respectively stronger wrecker. Because this one really struggled to lift and tow a big heavy tank. The front wheel nearly got off the ground and therefore the steering became pretty light = resulting in dangerous driving. I'm not completely sure but I thought to hear the crane material and chain groaning/moaning the way overstressed metal/material often does before breaking or at least bending. 😁 ;-)
