This was written in the 1830s as the song of the emerging Anti-Slavery Movement, that was based in New England, hence the words, "Pilgrims pride". The Union victory with the end of slavery in the Great and horrible Civil War, by far the bloodiest war in the history of the United States, made this a national patriotic song for Americans.

Maybe in the Saudi world where they still enslave poor Africans, or in other, less prosperous nations where they tolerate criminal slavery. But not in the free West.

I woke up this morning and this was playing in my heart over and over. I have not heard this song in ages. And I thought this was rather odd - because usually it is a song about Jesus Christ. This song brought a tear to my eye.
I am a son of the American Revolution. Direct descendant of Absolom and Clemmons Hooper. The main characters from the Books, Last of the Mohicans and The Deer Hunter by James Fenmore Cooper. Who fought in the French and Indian and American Revolution wars.
And as a USA Army Active Duty Combat Veteran - who volunteered just after 9/11 to go to war - myself. Patriot blood cannot possibly run deeper in my veins than any other American. Deal with it. And it is heart wrenching to see the state of which my country's life is clinging to. The spirit of slavery never left - it transitioned into financial through greed and debt. And it's companion, Division, such as from the Civil War, well - that is obvious in present day. Where I had relatives fight on both sides of that War.
I grew up not knowing I was even "white" and not even knowing I needed to look at someone differently because they had different colored skin, or think differently, or look differently, or believe differently. I even heard a fellow patriot whom the world calls "black" say the very same thing. And a tear came to my eye, because I thought I was the only one living Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream.
In heaven, will such definitions exist? In as much as we look at a garden full of different colored flowers - will that same spirit of definition and division exist.
We are all beautiful. We are all humans. We are all one. Do what is right. Accept you might be wrong. Listen more than you speak. And respect your elders. Respect your parents. But come to see the world for what it is. Come to see your parents for who they aren't. Love God with all your heart, all your soul, with all your mind, and all your strength. And it will be well with you for all of your days.
