Is This Epiphone SG The Real Deal?

  • I test the Epiphone SG 60s Maestro Vibrola model to see how closely it resembles it's vintage inspiration. I discuss the construction and features, demo the tones, and play it in a mix through my Fender Tone Master Deluxe Reverb with no pedals. I give my opinion of the model's build quality and fretwork, and sum up with my overall thoughts as to whether this guitar is worthy of your dollars.

    Landed on your channel to check out a paranormal tele review, ended up watching quite a few vids due to your playing. Something soul-satisfying about it. Doesn't matter what guitar you play.

    Leonard Great video like all the rest and playing as good as ever. Isn't too bad no one puts the right neck on a guitar anymore. But the Les Paul Junior sure has a nice neck.

      Yes, I do think Epiphone’s version of a 50s neck is a little closer than their 60s necks.

    I have a 2012 SG pro with Rosewood. My most significant complaint is the neck width is too wide for my taste, I have short fingers. Makes it not pleasurable to play. Basically a chore to try to play it. Of course I UPGRADED it with Gibson Deluxe (Kluson style) tuners, Bone nut, Gibson 57 and 57 In plus Pups, .022 PIO Caps. Changed the chrome pickup ring screws to black also does not have a veneer top or back, it is clearly a 3 piece body in cherry. Looks very nice but just can’t work with the neck width. Are most SG’s necks wide? Great playing. Cheers!

      @leonardgriffieblues5845  Před 3 měsíci +1

      SG necks do vary, but most are just the normal Gibson width and vary by profile. But yeah, a neck that is comfortable for you is one of the most important considerations. Thanks so much for watching.

    I have this guitar. I love it! Though I find the pickups a little dark. The bridge is ok but the neck lacks a little top end, will probably replace both for an alnico 5 set

    • @leonardgriffieblues5845
      @leonardgriffieblues5845  Před 6 měsíci +2

      I enjoy Alnico II humbuckers, but, while these aren’t bad at all, they’re not quite in the same league as my favorite A2 models like Duncan Seth Lovers or A2 Pros. And of course your amp or choice will have an impact as well. A2 buckers work really well with blackface Fenders for instance.
      Thanks so much for watching.

      What are they like? The only pafs I've tried are the tonerider alnico 2 classics. In my les paul they work, especially in the neck. However they just didnt gel with my sg. I put the probucker back in the bridge and I'm settling for the tonerider in the neck but it sounds a little muffled and not open enough @@leonardgriffieblues5845

    how would you say this guitar stacks up to your prs S2 standard?

    • @leonardgriffieblues5845
      @leonardgriffieblues5845  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Oh, I don’t think it’s in the same league as a PRS S2. It’s pretty good for a $600 guitar though.

    Sounds great, but I can’t seem to easily get comfortable with the way the strap buttons are placed and how far away from the body the lowest frets feel while wearing it with a strap. Maybe I’m not an SG guy, but I’m never able to spend enough time with one in store to know without buying it first.
    I notice you don’t play it with a strap either, and I suppose sitting without a strap is probably the most comfortable playing physiology, but from my limited experience, that’s very different from standing with a strap.

    • @leonardgriffieblues5845
      @leonardgriffieblues5845  Před 6 měsíci

      Well, I’ve played SGs with and without a strap, and at one time I performed with one five nights a week. I never had a problem but yeah, if it’s not comfortable then obviously it may be the wrong choice. To be clear, I’m not really an SG guy either having not owned one as a stage guitar since the 80s. My favorite recent SG was the Gibson SG Junior I reviewed about a year ago. That one felt nice and had a lot of character. Thanks for watching.

    Can you play pinch harmonics on it?

    • @leonardgriffieblues5845
      @leonardgriffieblues5845  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I don’t see why not. Not something I typically do but it’s more a function of the hands coupled with the right amount of gain.
      Thanks for watching.

    • @leonardgriffieblues5845
      @leonardgriffieblues5845  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yeah, not really my favorite look either. But that’s obviously a matter of taste and I try to be as objective as possible. Thanks for watching.
