What's always drawn me to Jackson Browne's music I now realize after all these years is the simple honesty driving his worldview. He's a realist. Doesn't deny what's out there, but recognizes and puts it in context and the personal responsibility of standing up, speaking out, and letting go, moving forward into the choice for joy. Thank you!
Yes well said Browne knowing the power within to accept with courage strength and hope, that Joy is understanding truth. Which only costs sharing and listening to gain more of. In stark contrast to mass man consumerism, which promotes instant happy, which always has a price, that loses its shine once you get the bill. That saying the best things in life are free. Browne puts that saying into truth through song, and a resulting joyful noise to those who can hear. This current limbo of happy consumer hopelessness will be replaced with joy of understanding. If, as he was taught, you approach every person as if they were the Messiah (this is NOT strictly a Christian mess age by the way) you will change the world and yourself and the other person in a REVOLUTIONARY way. Just in one moment. And if you take the care to read the whole book and practice this over and over you will find that your soul grows more and more and more sensitive, able to hear God and hear the other person with wondrous clarity. I just read those essays. She did something that seems extraordinarily difficult, but with such ostensible ease: she captured a transformative moment in American history using language that stands the test of time...like Jackson Browne does with his songs
many people may think Jacksons song are somber and dark....perhaps they are not LISTENING TO THE WORDS....He writes from his heart realistically with truth and passion....love you Jackson.... "Let the music keep our spirits high"

If you listen carefully to what Jackson says in that revealing interview at the end of this video, despite the fact that his wife had died just a few months ago a year earlier ( not sure of the dates that are provided) you will hear words and phrases that confirm the reason that he is considered a lyricist and a songwriter and maybe a poet. "When the sand was gone and the time arrived… in the naked dawn only a few survived" seems to connect this album to his previous, For Everyman. Sand was his metaphor for life-time, and for opportunities slipping by. Listen to Colors of the Sun, and Our Lady of the Well.

Bonnie Raitt has not written many songs at all. She covers other great songs mostly. I think she may have written a few.

For those in Occupy, the marches on the RNC & DNC, homeless camps and emergency rooms, picketing the pipelines and standing firm against the slash cutters and mountain-top removers and food manipulaters; the one's that will take back our 1st Amendment and our democracy. They are building an ark, and they will survive.
Its a bit more complicated than that.
