    "The Water is Wide" was one of the first pieces I ever played with both a right hand melody and a left-hand accompaniment. I wanted to write an arrangement of this traditional Scottish tune that hearkened back to that first version my teacher taught me when I was seven. I hope you enjoy listening (or playing!)
    A friend helped me film this video one foggy morning on the north shore of Lake Superior.

    LYRICS
    The water is wide, I can't cross o'er
    And neither do I have wings to fly
    Give me a boat, carry two
    And both shall row
    My love and I
    Love is gentle, love is kind
    The sweetest flower when first it's new
    But love grows old and waxes cold
    And fades away like morning dew
    There is a ship that sails the sea
    She's loaded deep as deep can be
    But not as deep as the love I made
    I know not how I'll sink or swim
    The water is wide, I can't cross o'er
    And neither do I have wings to fly
    Give me a boat that can carry two
    And both shall row
    My love and I
    And both shall row
    My love and I

    Very nice and soothing sounds, which is a fun contrast to the white caps of the waves coming ashore.

      I always felt that "The Water is Wide" is a melody that works really well when played slowly - the strings ring and fill in the space between the notes. It was a bit hard to hear the harp sometimes over the actual sound of the waves while filming, but it was still a fun experience.

    Ah this is so lovely and calming. I especially like that you’re all bundled up for warmth, somehow it contrasts with the peaceful arrangement so beautifully.

    Stephanie Claussen, you are amazing. Your choices of outdoor settings for the videos you make are always remarkable, but this one... oh, my, takes my breath away. I love the sea so much and sorely miss it because nearby here where I live there's none. It touched me so much everything in this video: the music, the way you play it, your outfit - so romantic, as if you were a bride playing to your love overseas and this song were like a prayer for his safe return. I even can sense the scent of salty water in the air. The casted skies, the greywater breaking onto the shore match perfectly with the contents of the song and the gentle, bitter-sweet way you play the harp by the sea.🐚🐚🐚 Truly brought tears in my eyes. Thank you.🌷🌷🌷(P.S.: Your friend filmed this video with great skill!)

It should be more people - and artists too - like you. Such people can change the face of the world - at least private worlds, like mine. And if something/someone can change private worlds, these altogether may change our world likewise.Thank you again and always...🌷🌷🌷May you always be blessed and protected.

    Nice, thanks!! I look and look and do not see the other side. Yah, give me a boat! This tune was my first violin lesson and is very popular on guitar. Since switched to viola G is perfect as play many fiddle tunes a 5th lower now.

    • @StephanieClaussen
      @StephanieClaussen  Před 2 lety +1

      I image it would be beautiful on both violin and guitar (or both together)! I originally learned this tune in the key of C, but transposed to G both for the sound, but also because I felt like it was easier to write the arrangement I wanted without straying too far into ledger line territory.

      @@StephanieClaussen I chord melody to open and close and sing 4 verses. At farmer's market (2.5 hours, mostly seated) it is one I play on viola while walking around to see if my legs still work. :-) It gets more feedback than any other piece.

    • @StephanieClaussen
      @StephanieClaussen  Před 2 lety +2

      That's great! I record the audio at home with a nice mic, but your comment made me think I should share some of the original audio - the waves were SO loud! I had a really hard time telling if I was staying in sync with the track. I'll put a little clip together and share it as a CZcams short if I can figure out how to do that.

    Lovely version of an old ballad tune. The version I grew up with was this: czcams.com/video/YjA9oRAUrhY/video.html
    In Scotland we sometimes use this tune for 'When I survey the wond'rous cross'.

    • @StephanieClaussen
      @StephanieClaussen  Před 2 lety +2

      A lovely version by The Seekers! I had not heard it before. Oh, and I just recently learned that this tune could go with "When I survey." It seems that Scottish tunes make good hymn melodies.

    • @blameless_hyperborean8638
      @blameless_hyperborean8638 Před 2 lety

      @@StephanieClaussen It's not entirely a coincidence. At the time of the Reformation, there was a shift to more corporate worship and the psalm versions that began to appear (eventually forming the 1650 psalter) were mostly done into the Common Metre (8686) and Long Metre (8888) of the ballad tradition so that tunes familiar to the people could be used for them.
