@Lawn Insider, my brother lives in Converse and he is getting cracks reaching as far as 4 to 5 feet deep. Not being from the area, we were panicking about sink holes. I live west of san antonio and am starting to see the ground separate from the foundation. Thank you for explaining this phenomenon for us. Love your videos and we are hoping to get some more rain soon.
Same thing down here, about an hour south of San Antonio with clay soil, entire yard is full of cracks, some places 2”s wide. Can’t afford to put enough water down, with drought. Hopefully Tuesday we will get a shower! 🙏
I'll stick to living in northern Indiana where we have maybe one 100 degree day every few years lol. I'm lucky to have no water restrictions, and water .5 inches every other day, my KBG loves it! 🙂
we finally got rain down here in San Antonio yesterday ... *your cold front day* 😆... but it was a soaker! My rain gauge showed 2.0" over 3-4 hours. Enough to saturate the bermuda lawn down to the roots. Prior to yesterday, San Antonio had received 0.20" of rain this summer, significantly lower than the 3.5" inches on an average year. Also, we dropped below 100 deg daytime high for the first time since June.
So did we! Right around an inch and a half on my gauge. Probably got even more considering it was raining sideways! It was much appreciated. The lawn looked significantly better today from that one good rain.
I'm in the Frisco/Prosper area and I have a ton of cracks around the perimeter of my yard. It's really a bummer because I had the yard looking good. I have been putting iron on my grass just to keep it having some color.
I think I'm going to stop fighting it and let it go. Going to stop spot treating and live with the results. I kind of have to after a $220 water bill. Wife was not pleased.

Next drought might be a good time to check and see if baby shampoo works well to help reduce water retention and cracking. I’m trying it out this year. I know there are other commercial agents out there, but they are expensive
At this point, I could care less about water restrictions. Put topsoil down in those spaces and water a good amount. Even go out and hand water those areas if you're allowed (or not). Places by fence post and foundation need extra attention and is very important to keep those areas from drying out too much. I think not filling those cracks in can be worse than not backfilling a tiny bit.
I just came in from filling cracks in my lawn. It is 11pm in Austin and I’ve been outside with a headlamp, a bag of topsoil, a bag of sand, and a handshovel. My soaker hose has been hard at work around my foundation all summer. I put the sprinklers on in my backyard as needed and I hand water the front yard late at night (I know, I know). The amount of time, energy, and sweat I’ve put into just keeping my lawn from cracking open like a faultline is insane. I don’t even have green grass to show for it.
We got super lucky today in San Antonio it’s been overcast pretty much all day and actually got 2 in of rain (on and off) hope you get some soon too bud!
Here in Leroy, TX, most of the cracks in my yard are around 11 inches. Found one at 18 inches and another at 23 inches! The ground is ready to swallow me up!
"cold" around here IS 93. No holes here in Leon Springs. I'm lucky, I have a septic system and I recapture that water and supplement my once a week watering w/ that. Even have some rain barrels that I fill w/ septic water. Put a pump on that and bam, sprinkler where ever i want it.
I’m not sure how long you water but for what it’s worth, I have a sensor buried 4” deep. I have to run a split watering at 30 mins each on main zones (x2) for an hour total per main zone to get to field capacity at 4” depth (4 a.m. and 6 a.m. runtimes) Fixed heads on shrubs/sides of house run 1/3 of that.
That is almost identical to my watering schedule. Obviously we might have some variance in pressure and what not, but still very similar. A sensor sounds like a good idea.
@@LawnInsider RainBird SMRT-Y is what i have. I do not have watering limitations and it just does it’s thing once it senses it is below 75% Field Capacity (where I have it set at). But the one day you can water, you’d know when you had the soil saturated. Also gives you soil temps which are good for timing Pre-M apps. 👍
What cultivar of bermuda do you have? I have celebration and it does great in drought. Larger rootball. You have more extreme temps than I do but my house seems to always miss the rain. I’m non irrigated.
What are the times that they allow you to water on your watering days? Here in San Antonio its between 7am and 11am or 7pm and 11pm. I was watering at 3 am on my watering day for 4 hours but they started giving fines for watering to early. I'll go measure my cracks later today.
Bermuda grass is very resilient and will bounce back when it get ample water. The cracks will also subside when the rain returns. Texas is known for its clay soil and when clay drys out it shrinks causing cracks along with many other problems.
Now I know why they call it a yard stick
If everybody in central Texas goes and details their vehicles today, it should increase the chance of rain.

Yeah, we need rain bad here in New Braunfels. I also agree with you about watering twice a week and getting an inch down

I’m in the same boat! I recently applied a treatment of Hydretain to help extend the effectiveness of my watering days.

Im in Crowley Texas bro and that's what I got around my whole perimeter on my fence line. Zero rain here for 2.5 months
Bermuda can still hang a bit. St Aug doesn’t stand a chance. It’s been rough. I’m just soaker hosing around the house to save foundation.

Yep i have cracks too, and the same wooden fencing as well. The fences are warping so badly that they might need to be replaced

You all are lucky - our water pressure is so low that about 50% of my rotors won't even pop up...
