Featured in this clip, "Little Joes," were one of the largest electric engines ever built as part of a 1946 order destined for Russia. Due to cold war politics they were never delivered, but the nickname referring to Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, stuck. Eventually, the South Shore Line acquired three, and the Milwaukee Road, the seventeen remaining. These engines developed more than 5000 horsepower and were geared for 70 miles an hour. Their immense weight and length-almost 90 feet-made them difficult to maneuver on tight curvatures and restricted turns, but the Little Joes were fast. They accelerated much faster than diesels and could duck through sidings quickly enough to allow for a steady parade of passenger trains without interruption.

I can remember the 'Little joes' running the line from south Chicago into Hammond, Gary and East Chicago. What a sight. Even then, as young kids, we knew they were something special. I saw one awhile back at the museum it was sent to in Illinois. Wonder if they could ever return the power to service. Bet it could haul a massive payload even today.

Slight correction regarding the "Little Joe" electric locomotives: The South Shore acquired 3 "Little Joes," the Milwaukee Road 12 and the Paulista Railway of Brazil 5.
