    Libraries, I love them so much! I have a limited income and am currently housebound due to several chronic illnesses. A large percentage of my reading every year is digital library books. Such a blessing!!

      I'm so sorry to hear about your several chronic illnesses. I cannot read ebooks. I get headaches when I have tried. I've only read one on a nook in 2010. LOL It sounds like you have a great library system. My library system is not good. I'd end up buying the books anyway. =/ We have a limited income as well and I am pretty frugal, so that we can enjoy a personal library. Then I share the ones I don't want to keep with others. 🤗 It's a win win.

      @@BookZealots Thank you for your kindness regarding my health. I'm sorry e-readers don't work for you. Bummer. Although, I will say, when reading ebooks, I miss the ability to flip back through what I've read, especially when reading history.
      I have a card in two library systems. One was an early adopter of digital technology so their ebook selection is extremely good. The other, which I use mainly for physical books, is a regional consortium made up of A LOT of local libraries, many of them of the small rural variety. (I'm in rural Ohio.) All the books in all the participating libraries are treated like one huge card catalog. I place a request and the book that is available closest to me is dispatched to my wee library for pickup. There are usually enough copies in the total system that holds are pretty rare. It's this sharing of resources that allows many of these little libraries to remain open. I'm blessed to have both these cards with their benefits. I see people like Cheryl, who are basically in a library wasteland, and feel for them. It just seems unAmerican to not have access to a free public library, even if its resources are thin.
      I'm with you on frugality. If I want to buy a book, used is usually the way I go. It's a bit of a hassle since I have to do it online but I've had pretty good results with Better World Books. When Book Outlet has a sale, they can be a good option, too.
      Heavens, look how long this comment is! I'm off. Have a blessed evening.

      YT ate my long reply so I'll try to be more concise. First, thank you so much for your kindness concerning my health. I really appreciate that. Second, I am blessed by having a library card in two different systems. One is excellent in ebooks and audio books while the other is outstanding for physical books (due to being part of a very large consortium of participating libraries.) I always feel just awful for the folks like you who have poor library resources. Or like Cheryl who have no freely available resources at all.
      Ok, that is all for now. 🤓

      My husband has MS and I understand health struggles. So yes, HUGS 🤗 to you and all you deal with.
      Oh wow! Okay, hooray that you have library cards in two systems and man I'm a little jealous. LOL I will be able to do this when we move though. And I'm looking forward to it. yes! Cheryl has it rough. I think she's worse off than I am. She has better Little Free Libraries though so at least she has that. 💗📚

    Hi, hello and I love this! Very "simple" concepts but it's wild how many people just give their kids a tablet these days and let them on the internet. I don't remember doing this, but my mom told me when I was a kid I used to read to my little brother (I was around 8 he was around 5) and he started his first day of kindergarten already knowing how to read. I used to read the Mo Willems Pigeon series to my son when he was a baby, with the silly voices and all, to try to start a love (or at least like) for reading and I think it's helped to this day. For his birthday and Christmas I'll see what he's into (game or show or whatever) and try to get a novel based around it. I'd say I'm on Team "as long as they're reading I'm fine with it", but yeah I'm sure there are exceptions but I never had to stop my kid from reading something graphic or gross or inappropriate for his age
    But I love TV too! Lol it's just unexplainable at this point, I've always just loved laying down and zoning out and watching a good series or movie. I don't do sports so I guess as a dude that frees up A LOT of time to do other things lol
    Thank you for sharing your review! Take care and have a good one
    Oh and remember when the 50 Shades series took over the world! On one hand it was so cool seeing the world hyped up to read, but on the other hand it was 50 Shades of Whatever lol

      Thank you for sharing! I wanted a man's perspective. My husband isn't a reader, he's a worker. LOL And Prometheus is the slide rule guy and reads math books. 😂
      Oh I love the story of you reading to your little brother. And Mo Willem's Pigeon books are AWESOME!!!
      I also love that you get your son books around his interests. I may have already mentioned this, if so I apologize. My older son didn't like reading. It didn't help that I didn't know he couldn't see. (he was technically legally blind. The Big E was blurry. There were screen testing at school, but they never caught it). Anyway, I teased him, who's kid are you? How are you related to me? It's in your genes. You have to love reading. LOL If he could listen to an audio book instead of reading it, he would. It wasn't until his freshman year I caught him in his bedroom reading a biography on Jerry Rice. 😲📚 I chatted with him about it, but inside I was doing back flips and double twists and doing a solid plant. He doesn't read like I do, but he listens to books on audio while he works and lifts weights.
      I know of the 50 Shades, but I thought it was one book, not a series.
      Not too long ago my son in law and I were talking about books. He's not a sports guy, he's a computer guy. But intelligent and less arrogant now that he's older. =) He was talking to me about, "if only there was a book on reading books." I sat up. "There is! I have two copies of it, do you want one?!" I think my enthusiasm took him aback, but he said yes and the next time they came to visit I gave it to him. (I was at his house when the conversation happened). We'll probably have a summer visit soon, so we can chat about it. Sometimes he and I talk more than my daughter and I. (kid interruptions, you know). LOL
      Thank you for watching, sharing and ah, the Pigeon books. 🤗

    You're not the only one that does that, Erion. 😉
    I find a small pile of possibilities tbr helpful for prioritizing and also to avoid overwhelm from having too many choices at any given time. I like how you give yourself grace to go down reading bunny trails.
    I've been contemplating a lot lately on the way my reading was pre-internet and how it is now with GR, CZcams, etc. Some changes have been an improvement but many have not. I've been slowly trying some new approaches and am attempting to find my true reading sweet spot.

    • @BookZealots
      @BookZealots  Před měsícem +1

      LOL Yay. I'm glad I'm not the only one that does that. 🤣📚
      Ah, that's an excellent point you bring up. Overwhelm. I can imagine that is true. There used to be a channel I watched who was contantly bringing in more books and she admitted to beinig overwhelmed but she didn't stop. I don't know how she chose which book to read next.
      I have to go down bunny trails because I learn something and then want to learn more and will just ride the wave, so to speak.
      It's wonderful to see how our reading evolves. Being aware if key and then flexible. It sounds like you're working it all out. Let me know what your sweet spot is when you find it. I'd love to hear about it. 🤗

    What are men doing instead of reading? In my house, the answer would be watching tv, but more specifically sports. That's also one area where cable and even streaming services really make money. They often only put the local sports channels in the larger packages they offer.

      LOL Thank you! I was curious about what men are doing. My husband doesn't read, but he's not a sports guy either. My son studies, but he's also a tool guy. It's nice to hear about other homes. =) Thank you for sharing.

    Long video. I got 24 minutes into it and had to take a break. But I'll listen to the rest later today. I agree about reading out loud to children. I read my youngest son and daughter dozens of middle grade and YA novels when they were young. It was a good family time none of us will ever forget.

      Okay - took a nap and now I'm back. You make a lot of good points including the way people are easily brainwashed by what they see or hear on television - especially some news shows! And it is apparently very easy to succumb to that. I do watch some TV shows on Hulu but avoid the news and always opt for a commercial free service.

      I hope your nap refreshed you. =) My brother watches a lot of movies and always complains to me about the agendas being pushed. Very much like the agendas in children's books. Do you like Hulu? I've heard of some streaming company that keeps movies clean, but we never subscribed to it, but one of my Christian friends loved it.

      @Eldertalk Před měsícem

      @@BookZealots That streaming company could be PureFlix. I've subscribed there too. Problem is I don't watch many movies. I like reality TV shows, and that's about it. I might watch movies that are novel adaptations. PureFlix was started by a Christian actor and there are some good Christian movies there.

      Oh my! I remember you mentioning this in one of your videos. This is ludicrous to me. I certainly wouldn't pay that just on principle. I'd rather use that money to buy my own books. And how far away are these librarys for you to drive to in order to have a card to access their books for $100? Do they even have books you're interested in? I recently found out that in my area, they're now charging for book transfers. When I homeschooled I was constantly utilizing this library feature, because some of the books were hard to find or expensive. One specific book I recall was from the Army base library in Ohio. We thought that was amazing. Today, that would cost me money if they even allowed it. =( Might as well buy the book.

      Great question. I looked it up. What I found was he has read over 7000 books and has them in his personal library and has written 100 books. 🤯 I don't know how many years he started logging books or reading a lot of books. But it's been 17 years since the publication of Read for Your Life and with only 52 books each year that's only 884 books. He's probably been doing this many decades and reads closer to a 100? I think.
