Proceeds to give a radio quality performance
Taking this course in chronological order. Thank you for the taking the care to make these so thorough.
I haven't this much fun learning something new in years. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Man, this is such a great thing to learn about. I sometimes spin my wheels when I have to re-record a part where I'm trying to duplicate something I did in a previous take. I'm probably a better player as a result of doing multiple takes as I try to get the "right" take, but this can definitely speed up workflow. Again, thanks, Josh.
Love your tempo in explaining every detail, so that people like me who are not familiar with the program can follow effortlessly. Thanks.
Hi Josh and everyone! After watching this video I discovered that you can colorize your takes which makes them easier to see which one you’re working on and if you right click on the folder you can “unpack” all of the takes if you find one you like that you don’t have to change, you can use it and delete the rest of the takes! Spiffy!🌟👍🏼
Imma be the producer of the year after I’m done watching these videos
THIS has been the one I've waited for! Finally understand how to proper utilise these take folders, THANK YOU!
I’ve been using Logic for a long time, bump into your channel today and learnt a lot.
Also found out that I lost hours, days to achieve suboptimal results compared to what you taught in the lessons.
Thank you a lot, greetings from Brazil.
You’re the man!!!!
Thanks Josh! Now I finally got how to comp my takes, it's so easy. I have had much trouble with it before so I have made it manually from take to take using volume automation. My life is so much easier now, thanks!
Great info and THANK you for putting video numbers and referring to them in each video. It made it easy for me to jump from #18 to this one since you mentioned video #14 for more on swipe comping. So easy to follow!
You guys are heros, every time I need to know something, a creator always is here for us and I can’t believe this stuff is free. If I ever get bags of money I will send some all your way, but in the meantime I need a refresher video on surface control mapping to MIDI controllers! 🙏🙏🙏
To all new users - flattening and merging a take folder is ultimately a destructive edit move. One way around this (and a damn good work flow) is to use track alternatives for different stages; an OG, a comp, a flatten & merge etc. This means you can always resort to the original state of a recording.
Or make a copy of the take folder, and just mute it and hide it for later if needed. We'll get to track and project alternatives in the near future though. Thanks for the tip.
Looking forward for more detailed videos about this
Fantastic tuition, I have really struggled with this and now I finally think I’ve got it, you made it look so easy and very professional so thank you for yet another brilliant lesson.
Excellent again as usual. Heads and Tails editing was a clever new trick for me. Much appreciated.
Well even from this video I could learn a lot, although I thought I knew the most important things about comping. But there were things mentioned that I didn‘t know. Thanks again, always enjoy your videos.
Great job Josh!
My man! You are the hero we all need! Thank you!
Great as usual. Thought about this and I tried it. I added a silent take (input set to a empty bus. I swiped in the silence between and got some great results. Just thought I’d share that thanks for all your inspiration. Cheers
Thank you Josh, very detailed and helpful! Nice chord sequence too.
Awesome! great video - this is the best explanation of this Take Folders....Thank You
Thanks Josh, you're a star! 🌟
Great! Helped me a lot to improve my workflow
Thank you for this Video Josh! U R THE BEST!!
Quite simply, you are the best.
I"ve been doin things the long ways lmfao.. Thank you!! your videos are enlightening fr fr
🔥🔥🔥
wonderful all around..the teaching and working of this you made easy, and that's a trick...btw, keep your head level or slightly downward when reaching for the high note...but your singing performance is great...thx
Fantastic
Thank my friend, this is where I got stuck and avoiding the comping cause it was confusing . Got it now:) BTW boombox is awesome, very convenient. \m/ \m/
just broke my brain with the scissor inside the take folder edit. This is why I watch the videos to the end. lol
niceeeee, thank you
Thank you!
Flawless victory!!!
Still trying to wrap my head around takes. I need to watch this video again and then try it for myself
Amazing video.. all series is great, but for a guitar player that needs to record guitar and voice, the last 2 lessons were really good
🚔🚨MUSIC POLICE🚨🚔
Sir, if I’m not mistaken, those are open-back headphones and recording vocals with them is a crime punishable by a bunch of nerds. EMS is on the way - hopefully you don’t BLEED out before they get here.
I have those same headphones and am definitely guilty of the same crime here and there lol. Can anyone even notice bleed? Like, it’s the song bleeding into the song. Hearing the metronome would be a problem though.
Sorry for the rant. Anyways, I just upgraded to Logic from GarageBand and this is the perfect series for me so thank you! The take folders are easily one of the best quality-of-life upgrades I’ve noticed so far, along with having an actual mixer and aux tracks, busses, etc.
Hi Josh! I highly appreciate all your lessons. There is something I never find but really need. HOW TO ADD A FILE TO EXISTING TAKE FOLDER? (I don't like the idea to unpack it then pack it with the file I edit with Flex Time and comp it again. Please help!!!
Very useful thanks, could have used some lyrics about dragons or something instead of the broken heart stuff but brilliant video cheers.
Mahalo bro!
I would like to be able to use the Takes function in a similar way to how a Looper pedal works. I'd like to play live and have the new take created on its own track AND keep playing. There is an option for audio to "Create new track and mute." but is there a way to have it create new track and not mute? Really learning a lot here and hope someone has some insight.
HI, thanks for the tutorial. Can you explain us the meaning of the input gain knob you setted between 31 and 35?
Quick question, is there a way to disable pitch correction in the sampler? I recently recorded a very out-of-tune zither string by string and want to keep the detuning, but the sampler keeps quantizing the pitch
Looks like that Shift-Control Click for Fade-Ins or -Outs is a right hander trick only. Tried it as left handy (using track pad with left hand and right hand for short cuts) and since there is no control button on the right side of my keyboard (MBP), it's a challengin short cut with my right arm all over my screen. ;)
If you go - Logic - Settings - General - and click Fade tool click zones - you will be able to drag fades In/Out with just track pad. Just hover in top bar in corner of region and hold/drag.
Brilliant series 👍
🙏
You sing pretty darn well for someone claiming not to be a trained singer! Great guitar playing as well, not to mention your absolutely fantastic videos. You've certainly got yourself another subscriber who is yet another Protools escapee thanks to Avid's corporate fascist subscription plans. Keep up the great work and I look forward to watching your other videos as I learn the intricacies of Logic's audio editing and mixing capabilities.
Hey, thank you for all the helpful vids, I've learned a lot from them! I feel like Logic is a bit lacking when it comes to comping. Ya, the swipe comp with auto-crossfades is pretty good for vocals. But what if you are doing acoustic drums and you have 12 takes and 12 mics. I don't like to have 12+ takes to visually grok, I'd rather have them stacked and use keyboard shortcuts to navigate the takes. Logic's slip-edit feature doesn't seem to work with pieces of takes, that is a huge part of my drum time correction workflow in reaper. Perhaps you have solutions for this. Id love to see a video on comping drums and time correcting without any stretching of audio etc.
If you put the drum tracks in a group, you can simultaneously edit any number of channels you want. I comp drums in Logic all the time. I would actually disagree and say that Logic has the best comping functionality of any DAW and I’ve used almost all of them. We will get to this eventually as part of this course.
@@MusicTechHelpGuy That's great, and I hope you do make (another) video about comping and time correcting drums. I've just struggled with it a bit. The grouping of tracks for quantized lock audio is definitely sweet. I think my biggest issue is I haven't gotten comfortable with moving individual drum hits around while comping, ensuring there is no weird flex-time artifacts, and that the "ambient" or room sound isn't disturbed. I rely heavily on "slip-edit" in reaper for this, and while Logic implemented a slip-edit feature somewhat recently, it doesn't seem to work in conjunction with swipe comping, at least I haven't figure it out. So I guess you need to use flex-time in slicing mode, but I feel theres some magic going on with that that I don't understand what it is doing.
Great video! Curious, how come Logic does not offer a comping solution for midi take folders? Is there a good work flow to do something similar with midi files I record?
Great question. Technically speaking, you CAN comp MIDI recordings. You just change the recording setting/preference for MIDI recordings to "Create Take Folder" and then when you have recorded the number of takes you like in the take folder, you can use the scissors tool or marquee tool to split the take folder at the edit points you'd like. Then select each take you want for each section you've split. Quick Swipe can't really apply to MIDI because the MIDI data on the region is just that, MIDI data -- just note ons and note offs. No audio. So cross fades and comp edit/joining points are useless with MIDI data. It WOULD be great if they added the ability to use the scissors or marquee tool on the individual takes, though. But because the MIDI data within each region is based on MIDI beat clock sync values, I don't think that is possible, or at least easy to implement for the programmers. Would be a cool feature though.
@@MusicTechHelpGuy Yes, I have done these work arounds but never understood why the comping couldn't be exactly the same.
I am a long time user of your videos but have never posted a comment before. I really appreciate the fast response. I am sure you have heard this numerous times, but your videos are some of the best tutorials on CZcams! Thanks for everything!
I know you have to have advanced features checked in order to use quick swipe comping. I just upgraded from Logic Pro X 10.6.3 on my old Macbook. Now I can't find quick swipe comping in 10.7.7. on my new iMac. Any thoughts? I am talking to Apple about it.
I do a lot of stereo recording with guitar amps. Can you quick swipe 2 tracks at once?
Funny. To comp, as in play behind a soloist, comes from the word accompany.
you have good voice too
I bought Expand 2 and Native Instrument's Komplete 4 but there are no sounds in Komplete 4 and only one preset in Expand 2. What is wrong? I am a blind producer using Logic Pro.
I have this issue where my audio is dropping when recording vocals what would be causing that ?
Josh, what mic are you singing through in this video?
JZ BlackHole 2. Its a transformerless condenser mic.
Did the author or someone have such a strange moment? In the session, recording is constantly in the "take folder" mode and suddenly... after a couple of hours of operation, this function is disabled and it is impossible to return it! There is no entry in "take folder" mode. No settings help. It remains to go back to the last saved file or create a new project.) Has anyone encountered an unexpected termination of this function in the project?
Anymore logic videos coming out this week?
Later today, tomorrow, and Friday. Got held up with some family stuff.
@@MusicTechHelpGuy Hope all is ok brotha, looking forward to the videos!
Logic seriously needs to update its auto pitch functionality.
Hey any reason why my shift + ctrl is not fading in / out?
The most common mistake is that you have to hold Shift + Control, then drag from the inside of the region to the outside of the region, or across a joining point of two regions. Also fades do not work on MIDI regions, pattern regions, or drummer regions. Only audio.
@@MusicTechHelpGuy wow man thank you for the quick response. Really loving the series so far.
When I unpack my take folder I cannot do quick swipe comping for some reason. The pointer just moves the take over.
Are you trying to do it with midi or audio? If it’s a software instrument track with midi regions, you can use take folders, but quick swipe comping only works for audio.
@@MusicTechHelpGuy It was audio of 20 guitar takes.
@@MusicTechHelpGuy I ended up deleting all but my last take since I could not do the quick swipe comping.
@@GlennHallLivingWater You probably just had it in editing mode, instead of quick swipe comping. There's a little button you can press to switch between standard editing and quick swipe. I demonstrate this around 17:19 in the video.
@@MusicTechHelpGuy Thank you. I will try that in a little while.
They're not mistakes. Just alternate takes😁
no one has touched on the topic of a poorly functioning sample browser yet, is there any way to make sample playback work as efficiently as it does in ableton, fl studio ??
Loops converted to untagged loops still work fine, but short one shots of drums or other sounds are drama. I miss the logic of such an efficient sound browser as it is in ableton or fl studio, it is very annoying when you sit down to do a beat and you have to dig through a lot of samples.
Where are you digging through samples? The Library has tons of individual kit pieces (samples) if you're okay with using Quick Sampler. Just open the Library (Y), go to Electronic Drum Kit, then scroll down and find the "Kit Pieces" option. There you will find a ton of individual drum samples that can load directly to a software instrument track. No need to even drag and drop. You can also load them into Drum Machine Designer.
@@MusicTechHelpGuy You might have not understood me...
I mean that if I have my samples in folders, they can't be played smoothly in the browser. It does not work as efficiently as in ableton or fl studio ... in this matter, logic has been lame for years ...
@@syndykdj If I have samples in Finder Folders, I just open the folder, select a sample and hit spacebar to preview the sample, then press up or down to preview multiple samples back to back. It involves having a finder window open though, but I don't mind it. But yes, having a sample browser would certainly be nice.
@@MusicTechHelpGuy Opening sample directories by folder is totally impractical... I don't understand why apple hasn't done anything about it for years... In ableton or FL Studio it works perfectly. That's why a few weeks ago I decided to switch to Ableton after many years of working on LPX
bruh, youre a lot of help... but what the hell is your name haha Mr Music Tech Help Guy hahah
and not bad singing lol impressed
My name is Josh Carney. I own a small music, audio, and video production company called Carney Media Group, based around central Florida.
@@MusicTechHelpGuy Keep up the great work Josh!
Is there a reason why you would consolidate your takes? Why don't just leave them like that?
You can certainly keep the folders if you want. There are a couple down sides to that though. (1) you can't add fades to folders, only regions. So what I'll often do is flatten and merge the take folder, then do heads and tails edits to trim up the parts, remove breathes, background noise, headphone bleed, etc. Then add a short fade in and fade out to each region. You can do the trimming and editing with take folders, but not the fades. (2) You also cannot apply things like flex time or Flex Pitch directly to a take folder. So what I typically will do if I want to save the takes, is duplicate the take folder on another audio track, mute it and hide it just in case I need it later, then flatten and merge the original track, and use it as my comped take.
@@MusicTechHelpGuy perfect answer. Thanks! Love this course btw!
