could you make a video on the antonov AN-218? it was meant to replace the IL-86 and be launched in 1994 but it was cancelled due to severe economic conditions, the closest this plane got to being built was a wooden replica of the fuselage but that was also eventually scrapped
This thing is definitly not an Aircraft, that´s for sure. But i feel one could develop it into a Spaceship. Just replace the old Reactor with a Thorium powered one, make it able to Take off and Land on Water and finalize it by fitting it with something more powerfull then a Rocketbooster and you have it

the fact that this is a real concept and not just a 7 year old drawing a plane from memory, makes me think that pretty much anything can be a "realistic" concept

Since you said the plane could fly 41 days straight, I assume this limitation comes from food and water for the people on board and not the nuclear fuel. Now if that thing could strap one or two NERVA egnines onto it, it could probably be used for fly colonists to a new moon-colony, haha.
This plane is positive proof of what happens when a bunch of engineers are downing pints at the pub.
Two ideas to toss into the mix. Could the airframe be modified to be a flying boat. It would solve the runway problem. Secondly if rather than flying point to point, it could be on an orbital flight with smaller jets (707, 777) meeting up with yet. Add in the idea of it being more like an Airship/Cruise ship, with cabins rather than those claustrophobic 20 inch seats, and you might be going somewhere. If you drop it from 18,000 to 9000 or 10,000 ; or even as low as 5000 passengers. It's still pie in the sky though.
Technically you could have less walkways between the seating rows..
You could have arranged it at 3 seats(for the windows) + walkway + 6 seats + walkway + 6 seats + walkway... etc
This would remove 4 walkways and provide more space for even more rows of seats.

and you could easily fit two levels of seats inside the front of the wings like some consepts had.
18.000 Passengers, that’s insane even everyone know this monster CL-1201, it is not enough people at the Airport but only Military personal with 18.000 Troops is enough for Deployment.
Legit could make a pretty good sci-fi movie with all these cool concepts.
The fact this is smaller than the other flying cruise ship yet it holds more than 2x it’s passengers is insane..
Well, that is due to flights usually being rather short, ships can take weeks and sometimes, months to get to their destination.
Having Phantoms hanging off the wings is just the icing on the cake. Lol
There is one way to help maximize space on board, and that is to use the wings. Like a twin reactor system in the wings instead of a single one in the fuselage.
I don't think impracticality is all about size, but more likely when the plane needs to refuel every 41 days, since it's using nuclear reactor, aerial refueling like conventional jets are out of option, not only that, if the plane literally "destroy the runway everytime it needs to take off or landing", the operational costs are too expensive, even if the plane operate as "flying Luxury Cruise Ship"

The 41 day limit is for food and water for the crew/passengers. Given its nuclear reactor it's range is virtually limitless like a nuclear sub or aircraft carrier. Tho the issue of landing for any kind of maintence is still a big issue.
Additionally it would have needed at least one enormous runway to take off from and land if some sort of maintenance is required.
Maintenance ? Oh boy, just imagine the hundreds or thousands of engineers this thing would have required XD

The PANAM aircraft depicted as parked next to it was a 707, but the aircraft in flight with it being called a 707, was not. It was a 135 which Boeing designated as a 717. slightly smaller thana 707.

@@FoundAndExplainedHang on……but the Boeing RC-135 “Joint Rivet” (ELINT?) was the military version of the Boeing 707. To the best of my knowledge, the later versions of the MD-90 series (MD-95) were also known as the Boeing 717 when McDonnell Douglas was merged with Boeing.
The RC-135 “Joint Rivet” was never officially known or designated as the Boeing 717.
If that thing can fly from Australia/Asia to Europe, Europe to USA & USA to Australia/Asia with so many passengers the price of a ticket is cheaper it would beat direct flight competition on long trips even if it had convensional jets.
If that thing can build,
Humanity would have much faster hypersonic jet power by small powerful nuclear reactors that will outcompete this.

if you think the size of this plane is absurd you need to watch the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise as they have massive planes that can transport an army of 18 meter tall robots and still have room for the personnel and amenities such as a cafeteria and medical bays, also the planes are shown to land on water instead of a runway.
B.U.F.F. Infinite. The sky train idea with this plane is completely impractical. Forget the VTOL feature destroying runways, the turbulence this thing would generate in its wake would destroy any other plane that got near it.
but what's the problem with nuclear flight happening from zero altitude? if that's just how it was supposed to work as a project, i'm ok with it... however if it's not explicitly stated, i can't see why it can't fly entirely on it's own reactor thus eliminating it's need for any chemical fuel. i mean, outside conditions don't affect the fission process at all (or if it's, for example, about cooling than it may be even easier at lower altitudes due to higher air density and thus it being able to absorb more heat per same volume)
Can someone explain why nuclear power only is available at 16000 ft and a standard jet would be needed for lower attitudes? One would think that it is available at all heights albeit with specific levels of efficiency…
I have an idea for what to do with those fighters simply convert those into escape pods another issue you have to solve is how are you going to refuel the reactor because U-235 decays when used that way shuttles can bring the fuel but how will you get the fuel where you need it safely and also have those shuttles bring food and water so all you need to do is get the plane in the air then you don’t have to worry about it.

Another factor to consider thanks to safety regulations: emergency exits, or lack thereof, in the middle areas. IIRC, FAA requires proof that all passengers and crew can be evacuated safely within 90 seconds. Oof.

I think a much more realistic way to board passengers would be building stupidly huge runways in the middle of nowhere and have the CL-123 take off and land comventionally. These airports could be connected to nearby cities or the rest of the country via a high speed rail line.

@@adastra7939 I have no freaking idea since this thing was never even built. But given the fact it is the largest plane ever designed it’s safe to say it would likely be many times the amount of thrust generated by the Apollo 11 rocket.

So, a couple of things that jumped out at me.
-What about the wings? It's nuclear powered, so surely the wings aren't all fuel tank. You should be able to use that space for more passengers like one of the old junkers aircraft.
-There is no way you are flying this point to point, so why not remodel some of easier to expand airports (Denver, Amsterdam, etc.) to be able to handle one of these planes landing and treat them like super hubs. This is essentially what they did for the 747 and the A380 after all.
-If you are using it like flying cruise ship and loading and unloading it through the support aircraft, it won't need to spend any time below 16,000 feet (except for landing every month or so), so it won't be consuming very much fuel at all.
-I think I heard somewhere that 80% of the world's population lives within 100 miles (~150 km for the civilized) of a coastline. You could get a few of these planes to repeatedly fly around the world tracing the coastline and having the support aircraft break of at appropriate times for the (usually) short flight to the passengers actual destination. Every day 2000 jets cross the Atlantic between Europe and North America. Using this system, you could condense that down to a few giant flights across the ocean, and a bunch of flights breaking off at each end. Once a month or so, you could land the thing at a specially designed base for servicing and stagger the service so you only need one base for every 30 aircraft.
I feel like you didn't really think about the practicalities of this, I'm a bit disappointed.

From a practical commercial angle, it would probably be impossible to find 18,000 paying passengers (or even 9,000) who all want to fly to the same place on the same day in any metropolitan area in the world, making this huge plane completely unprofitable.
The problem with this plane being an airliner, is that as an air,inertial, people would not want to ride on it. Many many of us like window seats. If we don’t have window seats we don’t want it as airliner. It’s one of the biggest reasons why the c5 galaxy isn’t one.

Besides the laborious nightmare of boarding and disembarking all those people in a normal situation--if you can call it normal--imagine an emergency. A huge number of panicking people in a confined space equals big death toll.

Nuclear technology has come a long way since this plane was designed. Pebble bed reactors are much smaller and lighter, and do not require water for cooling, which would make the footprint of the off-limits area inside the aircraft. It's also possible that due to advances in engine technology, nuclear power wouldn't even be necessary. If you use the engines from a Boeing 777, which are incredibly large and ultra efficient ( and produce 115,000 of take-off thrust each), you could probably replace the nuclear turbines with maybe eight of them (?) and have a very long range conventional aircraft that burns regular fuel (Greta Thonsberg just went into convulsions). It looks like that without the nuclear component, you'd gain another 35-40% of usable internal volume.
Was watching realifelore, until I found out it was an hour long, so I watched this, was it worth it? Hell yeah.

By comparison, an 800- to 1000-passenger version of the Boeing 747 Dreamlifter ("1000 Passengers On A 747 - Boeing Dreamlifter Passenger Version", March 25, 2021) with cabin pressurization and windows installed would have been more practical.
