With all pop culture, it has a humble beginning. Back in the far off year of 2012, an artist by the name of Tony Holmsten created an art series called killer is dead.
In it, he featured what can only be descriptive is a Miyazaki era laputa creation that seems to defire gravity.
While impressive, its our next artist, Alexander Tujicov
Who turned it into a 3d model. Its been so popular that hes increased the price up to 500 usd - which credit where credit is due, the 3d is so good that it fooled the world.
Then enters our hero of the story - Hashem Al-Ghaili. As part of some worldbuilding on reddit, he used the model to describe a fantastical flying hotel.
One that could carry 5000 passengers all over the world with luxury that isn’t even found on cruise ships. Everything from restaurants, shopping malls hospitals to even a 360 sky deck.
Such a large aircraft of course, would require a powersource that is equally bonkers. Fusion nuclear power. With near unlimited nuclear fuel, it could fly forever and never have to land.
Which btw, is the same concept behind the equally insane lockheed flying aircraft carrier which i covered on the channel - which you can watch here.
To ensure a safe passage, the plane would use state of the art artificial intelligence to pilot the craft and navigate turbulence - using what the author describes as noise cancelling technology.
Passengers would fly on convered 747s from the ground up to the sky cruiser to dock, and from there, experience the very best that the earth, and sky, has to offer.
The media once catching wind of this, went to town and declared that engineers in germany were working on this concept and that it could by flying within the next 10 years. Outrageously claiming as much as the dubai airline emirates already making orders - something that really puts to show how little research some news organizations do.
Its not the first time that the media has fallen to the hype of a flying sky hotel. Back in 2009, the media was tricked that the Mi-12, the worlds largest production helicopter, had been bought to be turned into a helicopter hotel - or dubbed the “Hotelicopter”. Which I think is a fancinating concept.
So what would it be like if this plane actually existed?
Well for one there are all sorts of engineering questions, let alone the laws of thermodynamics, that we need to take into consideration.
The first is the power source. Fusion energy doesn’t exist, and using nuclear power, even fission, onboard a plane, is a immature technology. I’ve covered in detail the experiments to build a nuclear powered bomber, and while in theory its something possibile, it might not be exactly something you want to do.
With 5000 passengers onboard you would need to absolutely make sure the radiation shelding is up to spec, and that there is a safe way to evacuate all the passengers within 60 seconds on the ground - something that clears aircraft to fly by the FAA.
Other questions raised are about where on earth this would take off to begin with, perhaps out in the middle of a desert somewhere, and how on earth it would be resupplied with food and water. Even the best aspirations require more than just
Lastly, we didn’t even mention the cost to build such an aircraft, nor the new engineering technologies we would need to develop to build it.
But theres one gaping question I have. Would it even be any good to be onboard? If you are like me and have flown long haul across this planet, there isn’t exactly a ton to see once your up in the sky and flying. I’m not saying the view isn’t utterly spectature, but after a while your just looking at clouds. Any landmark or site would be quickly flown by and you would blink and miss it - an advantage that our humble cruise ship has over this aircraft.
And as one redditor put it, "I'd like a zeppelin, but more expensive, more difficult to operate, and more dangerous, please."
But what if we wanted to make a sky hotel? What would that actually look like?
The funniest part is that tye news believed that a random 3d model made by a student for fun was a real planned project
Even flat/level earther picked it up.
And the fact that it was flying with its landing gear down
Bruh 🤣🤣🤣🤣
society I guess
I bet that "sky hotel" it's probably going to be made in 2045
And there are people who say the SHIELD Helicarriers are still actually possible... Even if, they are the WORST possible flying thing imaginable.
this design is much better than the helicarrier
The 747 Aircraft carrier is more feasible
Until you realize they've already mastered fusion power in their universe...
Sorry, buddy, but they're not. We can't build propellers big enough to fly such a thing at this time.
Honestly... just make an Arsenal Bird...
The Airship you showed was EXACTLY what came to mind the second the term "sky hotel" was mentioned. It would be the perfect way to implement it. Airships would also be able to increase the overall profit margin, rather then destroy it altogether. I'd pay to fly in an airship for a week to visit Europe. Who wouldn't?
That would be great. Unfortunately, that isn't possible at this time. Maybe in a blimp, but not in a cruise ship like the one mentioned in the above video.
anyone who wants to actually visit in Europe before returning home for their 2 week vacation.
Ahh I can’t see it the so called ai fails it falls out of the sky it becomes the biggest aircraft disaster ever and no body got seat belts on it so there’s gonna be some big injuries for the people and that’s before we talk about the nuclear reactor and need a city repair men janitors and other staff to keep it running
I think you guys may be confused. I was referring to the cargo airship they showed that's already in service. If they converted it for passengers and scaled it up slightly, it would be amazing.
@@emillaularsen6255 when the plane falls out of the sky there are bigger issues than wearing seatbelts
Honestly, we could actually bring Zeppelins back and they would be a hit. With today's technology, we have the means to make them so much safer than they were before; The Zeppelins were basically the first sky-hotels. If we brought them back, they would make loads of money and provide a divine flying experience.
watch mustards video on airships. they wont provide you with a nice flying experience...
Brilliant. That's sure to help with the global helium shortage.
Or are you thinking we should fill them with Hydrogen like the Hindenburg?
We stopped using airships a lot due to the fact they don't handle storms that well. The US Navy had 3 of them and storms tore all three to shreds.
@@davidtherwhanger6795 same thing happened to the R101. Largest airship of it time and it held the record till the hindenburg. Maiden flight from Britain to india and it got caught in a squall over France and crashed. Causing Britian to shelve its airship program and scrap the other smaller prototype design the R100
@@robotnoir5299 You must be slow huh? Another person trying to look like theyre smart but it has the complete opposite effect. Brilliant
This reminds me of a cartoon show called Totally Spies where in one episode, there is a massive passenger plane that looks exactly like this.
This comment also reminded me of an episode from Scooby Doo

YES! Please do a deeper dive on rigid airships and "sky hotels". I find the idea of airships past/future to be fascinating.
Me to! I wish i owned an airship! Its such an elegant transport from a more civilised era.
Please do. It reminds me off the old game 'Crimson Skies' where you have Zeppelins as mobile Aircraft-carrier with Hangars and Rooms for the Crew.
@@jenskunze4384 Ahh,yes!A man of refine culture i see! Too bad people dont use airships more instead airplanes and such!
That's going to be very expensive to build
And it's going to suck if it crashes
In the 80s my countries national railway operator was operating ,,cruise trains”.
Basically a hotel in a train going from one city/town to another overnight and then staying there the whole day so that the people can visit it.
That sounds like an incredibly good idea. Especially if it were to operate say Paris-Vienna-Rome or whatever. Have I just reinvented the Orient Express? But the 'staying in the city for a whole day' distinguishes it.
I can already see a Snowpiercer style show and/ or movie where the last of humanity is surviving on this eternally flying plane.
Yea except I feel like parts of the plane falling off or just breaking down would be a lot more serious on a plane than a train that can eject and disconnect cars on command.
This is just wall-e
@@KadenV1 just wall-e on earth
This literally put a wing and jet engine to Cruise Ship, but the concept itself wasn't new, back in 1940's Hughes H-4 Spruce Goose (the biggest flying boat at the time) also have this concept, a hotel-like luxury transatlantic flying boat where passenger get suite rather than seat.
The only thing that keep "giant flying machine" roaring our skies is (1) Earth Gravity (2) costs.
Don’t forget about the Saunders-Roe Duchesses and Queen.

Coulda been called skytanic. Obviously the whole sky hotel would be some type of airship you could abuse lift through sheer size and have much more control without needing excessive power to maneuver and stay airborne with much safer maintenance

Yes an airship mixed with a flying wing would be best.
Killer is Dead is an actual video game that came out like ten years ago. Not sure if this plane ever appears in game, but the fact that a fan rendering of decade-old concept art was able to hoodwink so many people is honestly hilarious.
Imagine how long and wide the runway for take off and landing needs to be 💀☠️
This bulbus designs makes all the Aerial Battleships and Carriers look feasible.
A deeper dive into the rigid airship would be extremely cool
If we want to create luxury air travel, I propose we bring back Zeppelins (albeit without the Hydrogen)
Right off the bat, that thing couldn't exist for the same reason the "Spruce Goose" was made a flying boat instead of having landing gear. Airport Size.
Amazing that it's even a question, it's obviously not possible, it's ludicrous. You'd stand a better chance of building the USS-1701-D.
bruh even the back looks like the OG enterprise saucer lol
@@apac13 You could say the imaginary diners are _"boldly eating where no man has eaten before, on their mission to seek out new starters and new desserts."_ 😂
@@Voltaic_Fire LOL
Exactly.
"All aboard the Sky Titanic"? You missed out on the opportunity to drop Skytanic! 😂
I just watched your Lockheed A380 video (very well-done). You point out that there is a practical size limit and passenger limit for air travel. Videos from Mustard point out the same thing. We may be able to physically build something that monstrous and beautiful, but where would it land? And getting 900 passengers/crew on and off the vehicle would take hours. There is a definite limit to how large air vehicles can be.
3:32 I just realized it looks exactly like a scaled toy. The glass shield is a toy's cockpit
I know obviously the thing wouldn’t fly but to add on to the previous criticisms, It’s using a wing design similar to a biplane wing which is high-drag construction used on FAIRLY LIGHT aircraft and not something as huge as the flying hotel
Pool on a plane? Turbulence just got more fun.
Even if it were fully possible, imagine if something like this were to crash. If it crashed over the ocean or an uninhabited part of the land, the rescue would take weeks, and if it crashed over a city, or even an area that is lightly populated, it could kill thousands or more.
There would be no rescue why you ask? Because its basically Chernobyl but many times worse
@@AliHaider-on7cl F
I’m about to be an airline mechanic, I’ll tell you right now the amount of maintenance a normal plane needs is insane. This would need hundreds of mechanics working 24/7 to keep it in the sky. I don’t see this being realistic for 50+ years, where is it going to land and take off?
Runways 30 feet thick at airports the size of Wyoming, why not? 😂
As an aerospace engineer, I gave up on humanity when I saw an ad for this
That new airship at the end of the video could have lightweight solar panels on the top of it's huge "fuselage"(?), some lightweight LiPo batteries to store energy, and use electric motors. They could also perhaps incorporate retractable panels, which open up to act as a type of sail, allowing the ship to save energy. This airship has potential.
On another note, the idea of a winged flying hotel seems totally impractical, if not preposterous!😄
How are you going to keep it in the air given the global helium shortage? Use Hydrogen like the Hindenburg?
And I'll just ignore the fact that the "employees" as cobalt/lithium mines are often child slaves, so anyone flying in this vehicle is directly benefiting from slavery. Hell, we ignore this moral disgrace for electric car owners, so why not for super-rich air travelers too?
@@robotnoir5299 Yes?
@@mickmuzzmkmz1628 Yes to exploding hydrogen transport AND slavery? Shit. I must be getting old and out-of-touch. I think both of those are bad ideas.
@@robotnoir5299 Mmm hmm...🙄😴
@@mickmuzzmkmz1628 You raise some excellent points there. Truly, you have a dizzying intellect. Alas, for now I'm going to stand my ground and continue rejecting these ideas that, at least in my day, were considered undesirable.
I couldn't get over the bonkers biplane wings with enormous girders connecting them!
I would say planes like the air force one are already flying hotels
True
Just for a one person
This is like something out of Ace Combat. I would go on it.
No, it’s too cartoony to fit in Ace Combat… at lest they followed some science…
Just to clarify here, 6:19 - Fission is well understood and implemented since the 1970s. Fusion on the otherhand is still experimental and we so far have not achieved more energy returned than put in. (I.e. efficiency is less than 100% - current best is around 65% or so from memory.) On top of this, fusion has only been sustained for a few seconds at most, with recent advances getting up to around 20 seconds and record plasma sustained for 101 seconds at certain reactors in China and South Korea (EAST and KSTAR respectively).
Well, it’s progress at least.
This concept is extremely expensive to the point that only wealthy celebrities and wealthy people will be able to afford it if such project ever materializes.......
You should 100% do a video on airships!!
Fr
Yes please I'd love to hear about old Zeppelin hotel plans please!
I'd love air ships to come back to popularity and use the advancements of modern technology, engineering, material science, motors, design, methods of operation, and safety measures understanding.
Thank you for putting out this video. I was getting sick of seeing this concept being taken seriously by people. As a 3d model, yeah it's well constructed and all but that's the only credit I can give to it.
A real sky hotel will most likely be an aerostat like an airship. Perpetually flying, never landing. Guests will have to be taken to and from it with smaller aircraft
This is the type of aircraft that you see on a clickbait “TOP 10 LARGEST AIRCRAFT” video thumbnail
I also like how at 6:50 he says "to evacuate the passengers in 60 seconds on the ground"
I don't think I'd want to evacuate any plane anywhere but the ground... But that's just me...
I can think of two examples of this concept in games, and neither is particularly optimistic. The Aigaion from Ace Combat 6 is a nuclear-powered flying aircraft carrier that serves as the game's requisite superweapon. It's a massive flying boat that looks like a cross between a whale and a manta ray, with a pair of partially-open flight decks along it's centerline and storage inside of it's massive forward wings. The other example is the Cradles from Armored Core: for Answer, which are even larger and are designed to serve as flying safe havens above the irradiated and desolate earth for the elites of humanity. These things look like demented tri-planes without a fusilage or tail, powered by nuclear reactors to stay airborne indefinitely, and I would estimate that you could cram a small city's worth of people and amenities into each one.
YES, VIDEO ON THE GIANT ZEPPLIN THING
Do a video on the soviet unions aircraft cruisers, specifically the Kiev class and Moskva class
Airships “can” be done again. Media has fear mongered many over the Hindenburg incident. But that tech was limited by manual controls of Hydrogen gas valving and poor materials. A.I. could do far better and with our current weather alert systems almost guarantee a smooth voyage.
Fun fact: Hydrogen gas has practically twice the lift capacity of Helium and is a renewable resource.
Only downside to such Humongous aircraft is the facility required to build/house them. The Hindenburg if on-end was as tall as the Empire State Building. And the hangar was bigger than that and of course we’d want to double that size if built again. What airport could possibly house this type of vehicle.
The FAA actually requires 90 seconds for the maximum time needed for a successful evacuation
And he just finished talking about journalists doing no research.
Time for another Found And Explained Banger! Keep em up mate. o7
"Flying aircraft carrier" automatically makes me think of Ace Combat 7's Arsenal Bird.
Now just imagine how the media treats the rest of the news - and you start to see whats wrong.
Imagine how many A&Ps you would need to hire to maintain something like that...
Leave it to Saunders Roe lol. We want The Duchess and The Queen
Yeah , i think he will make a video about them someday
I definitely want a video on that Cruise Blimp
the media really needs to research what they are talking about
A real "sky hotel" would probably be a giant airship...
Well can’t believe those media outlet would believe something looks like “designed” by a 8 year old…

The 1930 Zeppelin hotel concept reminds me of the types of airships common in the Airborn trilogy, especially the onboard airport thing, though in the books that ambition is scaled back to a sort of shuttle system with only a capacity for like one or two small monoplanes
Airborne also had abundant magic bullshit gas lighter and more stable than Hydrogen making airships a lot more practical.
6:07 BTW for clarification fusion energy does exist. For instance the sun is basically a giant fusion reactor. Of course nobody has actually successfully been able to sustain a constant fusion reaction. Still funny that they thought it would go in a plane.

Even if we have the technology to build a feat like this, this would be absolutely impractical. First of all, planes and jets going hundreds to thousands of miles per hour go that fast for a reason. To get from one faraway place to another as fast as possible. In the ocean, you have a lot more room, a lot more creativity, makes a lot more sense in exploring a region or even if going around the world enjoying the journey in the ship itself a heck of a lot less that can go wrong on a cruise ship in the ocean or any body of water than a cruise jet.
