+ScreenPrism -- You describe RavenClaw with an *High-Minded Academic Mind Stuck in the Clouds* trope, which is OLD as time. It's came from Aristophanes who meant it as an insult towards the philosopher Socrates over 2,400 years ago. Academics with his head stuck in the clouds is recognizable in English literally because the name Aristophanes gave the play where he insults Socrates was titled *_The Clouds,_* and it is *old as time* in theater history. Take the oldest known play that exists in Western Culture, and this insult trope was created for a play just 50-years later....Basically, it's over 2,400 years old

I'm not ragging on J.K. or saying that using a recognizable trope is bad, but the history of it is interesting, especially when it was created to be an insult.

Ravenclaws are CURIOUS. Hermione wouldn’t fit into Ravenclaw at all - Ravenclaws break rules constantly just to find out what happens. They’d be constantly blowing stuff up just to see what happens. Its not about being clever, it’s about wanting to learn.

Yess, I've always gotten the best grades whenever I really cared about something - and then I failed classes I couldn't bother to look into. Teachers were probably perplexed, I never fit into any idea of what they expected. They tended to see all of us either as failures or as successes, no in between.
Also, there's a misunderstandment that Ravenclaws do things because they're the logical and reasonable thing to do - which is something that's more a Slytherin trait, at least in my mind. Ravenclaws are not stressing over decisions too much, I think we understand that nothing is definite, everything is a good lesson even if we fail, and who cares what other people think?

    Any Ravenclaws out there?!

  •  Před 5 lety +4864

Hate me but here’s why hermione is not a ravenclaw but Luna is:
Hermione is book smart and has a very high IQ which allows for her to store a superb amount of information in her brain. She however is pretty stubborn, rigid and can’t think outside of what she’s been given via books and doesn’t question what she’s learned. If her knowledge is challenged then she feels angry (due to her low temper) that someone thinks they are right compared to her, rather than becoming curious about pursuing truth and thinking of all the viewpoints and arguments of a topic.
Luna is naturally imaginative, curious, philosophical and open-minded without relying on information given from other people and textbooks. She basically generates her own ideas through observing the world. People with this type of intelligence tend to be eccentric and seen as an oddball, although they may invent radical inventions and think of revolutionary ideas. They also can come off aloof and detached and often function solo more often than in packs of followers or leaders, which is reflected in the symbol of the eagle, which is a solo animal. This is what many don’t like about them, since they don’t abide by the status quo and happily do their own thing.

When I was growing up, I identified so much with Luna, as she showed me that's it's alright to be a little odd, and not everyone sees the world the same way.
Luna thinks with ideas and possibilities, all things that Ravenclaws pride themselves on, and is just as intelligent as Hermione, who fixates more on logic and common sense. I'd encourage everyone to think like Luna, and unleash their creative minds! 💙🐦

Grades are a mark of compliance, not intelligence. They prove someone’s ability to do as they are told, consistently.
Schools are confining, they tell you what to study, they have many rules and require good behavior to succeed. Ravenclaws are not interested in rules, we question them.
To the extent we follow them, it’s only because our real interests just so happen to be in alignment. So, unless a Ravenclaw truly values their schoolwork, it’d be expected for them to have bad grades.

      @silversamurai0267 Před 5 lety +14

@@westonkouryfan69 I think it's less about being underappreciates/underrated, and more about how people who aren't Ravenclaw don't really understand or think about Ravenclaw. There's this strange disconnect between Ravenclaw and all the other three houses that make things silently awkward. Everyone else just thinks, "Yeah, Ravenclaw! The smart house!" and Ravenclaw is over here thinking, "Smart? Tell that to the damn riddle I can't answer! I'm late for class just because I can't explain why a raven is like writing desk, and I stupidly left my homework in the dorm!!! How the hell am I SMART?!?!"
And furthermore, beyond the label of "smart", no one actually THINKS about Ravenclaw. They think of Gryffindor because of Harry, they think of Slytherin because "the bad guys", and now they think of Hufflepuff because of Newt. Even before, they thought of Hufflepuff, because that was the house people made fun of. Meanwhile, there's nothing really "exceptional" about Ravenclaw, that others find worthy enough to talk about. We're not the good guys, we're not the bad guys, and we're not the underdogs. We're just... the smart ones. The students in the background that no one thinks about. Probably studying or reading a book or getting straight A's on an assignment. Ravenclaw is literally the BACKGROUND characters. That's how people see it.
So it's not that Ravenclaw is underappreciated or underrated. We just don't feel SEEN, altogether. As though the other three houses just have more to talk about. Which isn't true. That's what this video is trying to prove. And we're grateful for it. That's all.

He has an odd sense of humor and people often disrespect him for that because he plays on his oddball features to mask his true strength and wisdom (which is a very smart move in his situation, may I add). The fact that he was raised in a very radicalized and narrow-minded culture and still managed to come around and realize the error of his way on his own, speaks a lot about his open-mindedness and curiosity. And the peak of that must be inventing the redirection of lightning by fusing firebending with waterbending moves. Plus, he is probably the most emotionally intelligent character in the whole cast.

It's very intriguing how the symbols and motifs of each of the houses worked out.
Gryffindor's element is fire and those from Gryffindor are often those who are fueled with a desire or a goal, and this side of them often allows them to become either a beacon of light (harry potter, dumbledore, the marauders) or a devastating fire (peter pettigrew, dumbledore, the marauders). Gryffindors are also known as lions, and like lions they have great strength (physical, magical, mental etc) in them, and while they may be able to work fine alone, they are more powerful together both in a good way and a bad (the golden trio vs the marauders). The red and gold of their house represents their passion and heart of gold, but at the same time it represents their blind frenzy due to their passion, the blood they may or may not spill, and impracticality.
Slytherin's element is water, and as such they are the opposite in almost every way from Gryffindors, apart from their obvious impact on the world. (fire and water are the two most obviously impactful elements) Rather than relying on fiery emotions and passion, they rely on cool ration and calculation.Their way of method is more subtle and thus often requires time to take effect but are undeniably successful one way or another (snape, voldemort, regulus black). Like their symbol snakes/serpents, Slytherins are brutal and ruthless and are naturally soloists. However, due to them being very similar to one another they often end up working together for their goals and when done well they prove to be a force to be reckoned with. (have you seen snakes attacking a single opponent together? it's horrifically incredible and they're not even necessarily working as a team) Despite this, they do have a loving side to them which they show only to their closest, as water is an element that feed life and love. Their green and silver represents their wealth (money, the greens of nature) and social class (silver spoon), but it also represent their envy, greed, and tendency for corruption.
Hufflepuff's element is earth, and like the earth they surely do contribute but are underappreciated. They often end up providing the fundamentals of things, such as upholding and fixing the law (hufflepuffs are the most who work in the ministry, susan bones and amelia bones were the ones who gave harry the chance of proving himself not guilty & skilled), making discoveries and writing a textbook for future generations to learn (newt!!), providing delicious and hearty meals for everyone (helga hufflepuff's contribution), or allowing someone to grow (cedric). Like their symbol the badger, Hufflepuffs are hardworking, friendly unless provoked, and protective of those they deem to be close (cedric protecting harry, newt and pickett, ernie & hannah about justin/hufflepuff/muggleborns). The yellow and black represents their fairness, sunny disposition and perseverance, but also their naivety and unreasonable stubbornness.
Ravenclaw's element is air, and very much like their element Ravenclaws are inconspicuous most of the time. Their expertise and crafts has influenced many's life in the grand spectrum but not many exactly notice their influence and presence (ollivander's wands, trelawney's prophecies, luna's perception, cho's emotional intelligence), and Ravenclaws tend to not care whether they get noticed or not, nor do they care if they are seen strange in the eyes of others. Like the eagles, they strive high for what they want and what they see as the truth, and if they see their chance they do not let it out of their claws, and there is a certain charm and dignity to this (cho, luna, xenophilius, ollivander). The blue and bronze represents the openness and clarity of their mind, flexibility, and widespread influence (bronze was/is used industrially and artistically), but it also means that they can be aloof, misfits, and unfocused.

On another note the color blue could also symbolize Ravenclaw’s individuality from other houses, and their quirkiness because the colors red, yellow, and green are on the traffic light which are the colors of Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin, but blue (Ravenclaw’s color) isn’t on the traffic light. The color blue could also symbolize Ravenclaw’s introversion, because out of those four colors, blue was the last color to be labeled by ancient Greek, symbolizing Ravenclaw’s obscurity compared to the other houses.

Not necessarily. We tend to focus on something in particular that we find fascinating, but we’re not Hufflepuff’s. We are not automatically friendly and accepting of people no matter how odd they are. We are smart and like other smart people that we can talk to. Being extremely strange does not necessarily make you a Ravenclaw, nor does it mean that Ravenclaws will like you. Hermione was originally supposed to be a Ravenclaw and chose Gryffindor and she hated things that we’re illogical or strange. Luna got bullied by her housemates and everyone thought Trelawny was a weirdo and avoided her for the most part. Some Ravenclaw’s are extremely eccentric but most of us are more like Cho, Flitwick and Hermione. We just want to learn everything and focus on whatever we are really passionate about no matter how difficult or odd that subject may seem to everyone else.

Oh wow! As a Ravenclaw, I am deeply flattered. We Ravenclaws are the nerds of the Hogwarts houses. We may seem brave from the outside. However it is more a matter of obliviousness and apathy. We just do our own thing and don't give a darn about what anyone else thinks. At least it is this way for me. Who knows? The video did say that Ravenclaws don't monopolize intellegence. Maybe Gryffindors don't monopolize courage either. Ravenclaws have the courage to be themselves and face solcial stigma. Snape is a Slytherin, and he is the bravest man that Harry has ever known. He was able to hang out with Voldemort of all people and still be a spy for Dumbledore. That is impressive. Somebody should give that guy a great big trophy. Newt Scamander is a Hufflepuff, and he has the bravery to connect with magical creatures, even the scary ones. He was even willing to face Credence in the first movie. Similarly Luna is Ravenclaw, and she is brave enough to face the creepy looking thestrals.

Actually, Hermione was a Hatstall. She was Sorted into Gryffindor only because she chose to be. But I agree with most of your points. I think another classic Ravenclaw quality is appreciating different types of intelligence, from being original and imaginative to being logical and...well, Hermione-ish. Intelligence can't be defined so easily; different people look at it through different lenses, depending on the qualities they value. This can include both people like Hermione and Luna. Which is probably why Ravenclaw houses all the characters who're smart in their own ways, even if they aren't regarded as intelligent at the first glance.
Trelawney, though...I think she was added to Ravenclaw to re-emphasize one of HP's main themes: your house, your bloodline, or any one cookie-cutter category does not define who you are. Trelawney, according to JKR, wasn't very skilled, but regarded herself as God's gift to mankind. Despite the fact that she did spout out the occasional prophecy. Sort of like Crabbe in Slytherin (like, ambitious or cunning wouldn't be the first traits that'd come to your mind when you think of Crabbe, right? He's more of a supportive person.) or Wormtail in Gryffindor, for he wasn't...exactly...the bravest. Personally, I love Luna!

Dumbledore, Snape, Sirius and Harry's mother have deep impacts on who he becomes as a man and what he values, but it was a girl of his own age who dared to question and be different that expanded his understanding and tested the limits of his perceptions in new ways. That Harry was so willing to see things from Luna's viewpoint without judging her also says a lot about him, and shows the bit of Ravenclaw that drives him as a person. I'm Slytherin with Ravenclaw undertones. I value knowledge and individuality a lot, but I also value ambition and achievement.
I think that Slytherins and Ravenclaw are prone to understand each other quite easily, since one values ambition, and you need inteligence and creativity to accomplish your goals. Also, Ravenclaws are most of the time understanding people, and Slytherins are complex and more honest about their dark side. Doesn't mean that we like to be bad, just that we aknowledge the dark aspect of every individual and ourselves, and sometimes we can use that darkness in a possitive way.
More productive way (sometimes, right? sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't 🤷‍♀️)
And I kinda ship these houses together(? 🐍💚🦅💙

@@Simpson17866 hey! I also have a Ravenclaw friend, and we share a common ground in terms of understanding each other and creativity (she studies music, and I'm studing writing). Though both paths differ, we share our same passion for creating art, and sharing our insecurities about the type of life we chose LOL😅.
The only thing that we differ, is in our way to describe "happiness". For her, happiness is a permanent state of calmness and stability. She has a more spiritual and philosofical way to see life in general. Whereas for me, having a goal and achieving it, would be the definition of happiness. And that not only involves the materialistic side, but also relationships as well. Though for me is not that important, it is essential to not end up crazy, since we are social living beings by default.
And because being sociable and having contacts is also useful, especially if you are in the field of arts and creativity, hahaha. We both agree in this one.

@@Simpson17866 *cringy stuff lulz.* At least I'm self-aware 😅👌. I just started to write a fanfic (of a Disney movie) because... IDK, I had the urge to write a fic (for the first time... ever), so I put aside my own project for a little bit. But my own story is something I've been planning for many years, is just that I started taking it seriously until two years ago.
Anyway, I think my story would go around science fiction and fantasy at the same time. As far as I know, that genre is called "Science Fantasy". But hey, it's an embryo in gestation, I'm just beginning to know it myself. I have to give my own laws and magic system to make it consistent, and not disastrous or deux ex machina-like. And study everything, basically. Mainly history and different cultures :'v
*Why do you want to write, anyways? I'm curious :3* In my case, I like to express my thoughts, to provide a different perspective that was presented in something that was shown to me, like a movie or book.
Sometimes I don't feel satisfied with the answers that a story presented me, and I want to explore similar (or different) themes, but with other perspectives and/or courses of action. And also because I'm so passionate about the complexity of our human mind. Why do we call something "inhumane" to describe a horrible thing that a human does? Why is our morality so flexible and rigid when it comes to certain individuals? Is God really good? Is Lucifer all evil? Do we even know who we are, or what we are capable of doing in some specific dark situations? Those are questions that makes me feel helpless for not having a definitive answer, but passionate to continue exploring.
A week ago, more or less, I saw Fantastic Beasts 2 and... I didn't like it. The movie in general was _Meh_ But something very particular inside the film was what made me very angry towards it. 1) Leta's fate, and 2) Dumbledore's actions (or lack of them).
I won't spoil anything, but I'll extend myself if you want or already saw the movie 😊
Sorry for writing a big-ass fucking essay to answer a basic question... I can't help myself 😓

I'm also a Slytherin with Ravenclaw undertones. While I appreciate knowledge for its own sake, I prefer knowledge that can be applied to further my own goals. But I value what Ravenclaws have to offer, and I think they make good partners, providing an alternate perspective that can cover my blindspots and give me options that otherwise might not occur to me. Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs also bring value to the table, but I find the quirky nature of Ravenclaw to be very appealing. I would prefer a relationship with a Ravenclaw to any other...a relationship with a fellow Slytherin would be dominated by the power dynamic. Gryffindors are, well, a bit insufferable and way too stubborn and headstrong about doing what's right for the sake of doing what's right, while I prefer pragmatism. Hufflepuffs are fine people, too, and the smarter ones would also be appealing. A Ravenclaw would be fun to be around, spark my intellect, but wouldn't try to challenge me (in the sense of being a rival, again, something I would always have in the back of my mind with another Slytherin).

Gus was a Slytherin. He was ambitious, focused, calculating, and cunning. He played the long game. The whole time he was really aiming to get his revenge against the cartel, but in the meantime while he worked towards his real goal, he turned the drug trade into a very lucrative business for himself. He treated it like a soulless corporation and was extremely efficient, not caring who died in his climb up the ranks. He was all about the ends justifying the means, and for him the beginning, middle and end all revolved around murder. He wanted his old enemies to die, even after he succeeded in becoming a big shot in the drug trade. This guy was a cold and calculating Slytherin through and through.

Agreed Walt may have been very intelligent and brilliant but he was also really egotistical and too sure of himself for his own good. Plus he had so much pride in his own genius and success that he didn't seem to either realize or care about all the harm he was causing, yet alone how many people he had killed so long as he could make a profit. In fact he later becomes a sociopath who doesn't hesitate to eliminate anyone that gets in his way. If you ask me he was very much a real life "You Know Who".

I was placed in Ravenclaw back when I played Pottermore, what I find interesting today is that the Hogwarts houses all have animal hunters for symbols, however, it's Ravenclaw that has the eagle. While the lion and the badger are fierce hunters they are limited to the land, although the snake can on land and even on water, it's the eagle can hunt on all three elements: air, land and water. In fact, the badger and the snake can be hunted by eagles, the Mexican coat of arms has an eagle catching a snake in its talons and beak, only the lion can rival the eagle in hunting, this is why heraldry featured lions and eagles the most.

I agree. And I'd pay to see the hat sort Sherlock. If it took longer than ten seconds, I think Sherlock would flip out and start ranting at the hat.
"Come on, now, get on with it and decide already. I researched all the houses and their attributes after I got my letter and I have the most utility in Ravenclaw...which you should know by now, since it's already been ten seconds. And if I knew where I belonged right off, you'd think a magic hat would know it even faster. Which leads me to surmise that you're not very good at your job. Maybe I should sort everyone in your stead, and make faster work of this 'ceremony'?"
And two things could happen after that: the hat sorts Sherlock into Ravenclaw just to get it over with and end his rambling, or it purposefully sorts him into Hufflepuff where he'll be in eternal hell surrounded by people who are so chipper and nonjudgemental about everything. ;-)

I think that's because I've always been in a similar personality range to Luna, sticking out like a sore thumb and considered very different from the crowd and "eccentric." I think Luna and I would understand each other at a very intimate level, and I could imagine having amazing discussions with her about the world around us.
