  • Positioning yourself to catch a wave or round a buoy is one of the most important skills in improving your sup surfing, sup racing or sup foiling. Many people think that in order to become a better sup surfer or sup foiler, they need to think about what they're doing on the wave. This is far from the truth!
You can't improve your sup foiling or sup surfing if you're not catching waves and catching them in a good position. Therefore, foundations techniques like the pivot turn, j-stroke and paddling with your hips (all found in our tutorial series) can help you catch more waves and in a better position. This will allow you to practice your sup surfing and sup foiling in better conditions and help you improve faster.

Cross bow turn....now I have a name for it!! Classic when you paddle back out, if your still standing..

Hey so I see that both of these are totally different methods. You show a different one for each side. But can they be done for the opposite side as well? Is there a frontside and backside for each of these methods? One thing, I wish you showed the whole maneuver at least once all the way through without pausing. I think it would be good to have some more technical info too. For instance, on the second one it would have been good to hear you talk about holding the paddle in the right side stroke position but that you were reaching over to the left side with your hands still in the right position. It was hard to understand what was going on there. But thanks for these videos. They totally help!

9:15 frontside, backside- terms to simplify left/right for goofy/regular ;)

Very useful video. I'm not graceful at cross stepping on my board either. Will try this. Thanks.

I would like to have seen these turns at actual speed. Slow motion was helpful but it would have been great to see the full turn without slo-mo back and forth.
