    Using term like “what pisses you off” “annoy the locals” then coming up with a list of minor inconvenience’s makes it sound like the people of Madeira resent tourists. I have just returned from there, and I found the locals to be very hospitable and great to be around. It’s simple, when you visit be respectful and you will have a great time in Madeira.

      Madeira is famous for it’s hospitality, tourism has been a major influence on our way of life for the last 200 years! I love living here and I’m very proud of my roots. ❤️ This video is made to help our guests navigate, not to make it sound as if we resent tourists, most of us make a living from tourism ;) hope you stick around Cliff, good things coming ;)) cheers ✌️

    I'm from The Canary Islands, Madeira reminds us of our islands, that's why we are comfortable exploring the island and hiking. I highly recommend tourists learn some Portuguese, at least several sentences "Pode trazer a conta? Por favor" , "May I have the bill? Please"

    I am guilty of not knowing how to fill up my vehicle at the petrol station. Thankfully an annoyed local helped me. As a tourist, one thing that annoyed me about Madeira was that it seemed like 95% of the restaurants had the same menus. It was a game to find the few that were different.

    I've been driving in Madeira for half a year, but there is one specific roundabout which always gets me. When coming from the west at VR 1 exit 8 to Sao Martinho there are two parallel streets entering the roundabout. You can't just wait till there is no traffic, because people behind you will get nervous, so you have to enter on the outer lane. If you want to go straight you have to change to the inner lane while you are already inside the roundabout. My wife and I tried to find the perfect strategy there but it's nerve wracking every single time. 😂

    • @Hittheroadmadeira
      @Hittheroadmadeira  Před rokem +1

      I know which one you’re talking about, you need to get into the inside lane. If you’re coming from the highway, you have right of way ( I think because you’re on the “right” side of the other car waiting to get in ) so on that particular roundabout, those who are coming from the highway (west) have right of way. I always go straight into the inside lane but it is a bit of a dance 😂

    It's just ridiculous to hear that tourists should somehow be very considerate towards the locals. Madeira invites us through massive advertising to come and admire its nature and enjoy the weather. We can fly to other places, equally beautiful. But you invite us. You survive because we come to you. Guys, you are very sensitive, and it's quite characteristic of you. I met so many people on the island who don't even try to hide their irritability, especially in the service industry: bus drivers, waiters, sellers, cashiers etc. And now there's a video about how we should not annoy the locals... Come on...!

    • @Hittheroadmadeira
      @Hittheroadmadeira  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I think you misunderstood the message behind this video, it’s meant to help out visitors better navigate the island. Unfortunately drama sells, it’s called click bait. So yes, this is a marketing technique I’m not afraid to use say 2 or 3 times a year… anyway, we’ve had tourism for over 200 years, I think we know what we’re doing ;) sorry you had a bad experience of some sort, there’s bad apples everywhere. Hope we can make it up to you my friend. All the best ✌️🤠

    Cash, I've spent time in Portugal and Europe. I have found it hard to collect up change primarily for tips. I find myself often with too large a denomination for a tip. Also, the bank ATM rules discourage taking out cash. Each time you take out cash there is a fee and a 200 limit makes this add up fast.

    I find these videos just make people feel unwelcome to be honest. It's just Madeirans love pissing and moaning, and they can be miserable people at times. Some of these things I've seen Madeirans doing themselves. But that's an incredibly Portuguese thing. Lots of rules that they don't follow, but insist that every one else does. For example if you come here and choose to hire a car it's much more sensible to drive slowly and risk annoying some miserable idiots than to tear around the unfamiliar roads just to make the locals happy. My advice would be just come and don't worry about upsetting people, just be nice and you'll have a great time. Which I'm sure you would do anyway.

      Hmmm, I want to say yes, but I’m not sure…. I don’t want to tell people they can leave their doors unlocked, as I often do, and then they get robbed and it’s my fault. You know what I mean? But, Madeira is one of the safest places in the world I’m sure, when it comes to crime. You don’t find much car, bike or motorcycle theft but it does happen (very, very rarely) the rest I would say use “common sense” you can walk alone at night where everyone else walks, you can’t walk around at night in places you probably shouldn’t be. Watches, Chains and expensive jewellery is the same as anywhere else, some people like it, some people think it’s not necessary. I don’t think locals would cringe ;)

    # 4 is not only in Madeira. You are far better off speaking English than Spanish. One has to avoid Spanish (and also Brazilian). # 3 is French in my experience. 09. ya! ja aprendi Jeff! no more google maps, no more waze. Just follow the road! E é verdade, segues os sinais e ás de la chegar. por acaso, a madeira está bem sinalizada. no continente isso nao acontece. acho que o algarve (estou sempre a dizer mal do algarve😂) é pior sitio que eu conheço para um gajo se perder. muito mal sinalizado. eu acho incrível como o algarve, que tem tanto turismo. tem as merdas das SCUT, que sao portagens sem paragens, mas sao boes... e as estradas continuam a ser uma merda. eu tenho pena dos algarvios, que enfim podiam estar apreciar o fruto do que é terem tanto turismo. a madeira sendo uma regiao super dificil pela geografia, tem estradas espetaculares, tuneis que atravessam de um lado ao outro. o algarve podia ser o 3º polo de portugal, grandes cidades. bom clima. o clima do algarve é espetacular. mas pronto, se calhar ha coisas que eu nao sei, nao quero ofender mais ninguém 🤣

    Please bear in mind that thanks to tourists people serving them each day have job. Dont know what was the goal of this video but it is rather inappropritate to point out things like wrong pronounciation, or driving slower than overreacting locals, or being slow tourist enjoying their visit.. Actually half of points apply to any place, and to anyone.. Use more perspective than perception. If tourists werent here, you wouldnt have job. As simple as that. I dont say tourists can do whatever they want, but somenof those points are really inappropriate. It is like saying „tourists, be here and do whatever you can to make us happy, so we can take your money in more enjoyable way”..

      Hi Michal, unfortunately these days “clickbait” is what gets attention, so don’t mind the dramatic title ;)
      The purpose of the video is to help, not to criticise. I’m sorry if you took it that way, or if you had some sort of bad experience, seems there’s a lot of people complaining online these days ://
      As I mentioned before, just trying to help, things like paying for a coffee with a card, speaking Spanish instead of Portuguese are tips for people to have a better experience with the locals, it’s not at all complaining. Tourists pay my wage and if you notice there’s over 100 videos on this channel with free information on loads of different topics, don’t take one “clickbaity” video to heart please 🙏
      Anyway I hope you enjoy Madeira and if you need anything from me, I’m only an email away 🤠 cheers !!

    Let´s be honest.... what you should never do in Madeira... make life difficult for the people who live there... like 1) walking side by side, not leaving any space for people to pass who are in a hurry... 2) demand locals to speak their language (unfortunately common with certain tourists... you wouldnt believe their entitlement)... 3) ask for directions in unthinkable places like pharmacies (wtf?!)... 4) drive around like they have all the time in the world (seriously respect the locals who work and live in Madeira)... 5) live in Madeira, not paying taxes and enjoying Madeira´s health services, payed with locals money (you should be ashamed!!!)... 6) camping in unauthorized places (this makes so mad!!!)... 7) leave trash... 8) criticize Madeira´s culture... 9) e 10) because it´s turning into a real problem, which is buying properties in Madeira to a point that the average house price is so high that even a middle class couple is unable to buy a house ... well, of course people who lives from tourism wont tell you this but this is the reality... its a matter of time until locals start to be less friendly.

    • @Hittheroadmadeira

      Hi Sara, sorry to hear about your housing stress. Yes, real estate has gone up, but not just here in Madeira, all over Portugal, Spain, Germany, United States, United Kingdom, many, many places. One of the only places it’s actually gone down is in South Africa apparently, where the violence and lack of electricity has made life dangerous for our immigrant cousins :(
      I have said it before and I will say it again. The Madeiran people, especially young people, have NEVER been in such a privileged position. 40, 60, 80 years ago you had to leave Madeira to make anywhere near enough money to buy a house, a decent house should I say. There was no work, there was no food and no internet!!
      Personally I think anyone can buy a house, even with a low wage, but most young people won’t because they don’t know how to save money (no excuses) and aren’t willing to sacrifice their time and lifestyle.
      I sincerely hope your next comment on this vlog is one of optimism and positivity, cause you know the only thing you attract when you’re thinking of bad things, is bad things ;))
      Beijinhos and keep your head up Sara ;))

You can’t seriously advise people to trust your cabs on the island, as they rip you off repeatedly, drop you in wrong places because they don’t want to drive up a hill etc. Usually you get a tour guide to help you cut the crap and not lead you into it. Just trust the cabs guys 👌😆

      And criticism dit not even deserved an answer as the previous or following comments, but i'll give you one: i say you are right :) it's kinda poor content but at least he tried, same goes for tourists when "hitting" spanish over the portuguese language, i say: at least they have tried!
      Its like everywhere else in the world, there are ups and downsides of tourism and people will always be people.
      Bottom line: we the madeirians or madeirans, wtv, love tourists and we have been evolving due to all of the cultural exchange and visitors perception over the island life and it's features, and we sure know how to improve it and adjust it to locals and visitors, so you're all welcome.
      I guess Jeff just wanted to welcome you all to the island and while here to join one of his 4x4 tours, and that's great!
