    Hey Mel, don't forget the additional cost (and space required) for the gas locker and having it professionally installed needs to be added on for a fixed gas hob. Plus in some countries you also need to have the install certified every few years too. I use one of the camping ones, but never leave it unattended, and have a windshield for it too. I also have a portable induction hob for when we are on hook up. The pair cost less than GBP50 an dI can use them in or outside the van, plus I can change the layout of my kitchen too if needed. Good info on the safety issue of camping stoves, if you are aware of this and use them accordingly, then I still think they are a good budget option. Keep up the good work! 😎🚐🛠

    • @SirRob7
      @SirRob7 Před rokem

      One reason I'll never use a camping stove again once I build my new van is that once I turned a corner and the stove slid across the back opening the box and turns Ng the dial to the on position. I didn't realise this and only noticed when I thought there was a bad smell around the town I was driving. When I finally stopped to investigate and opened the loading bay there was literally a fog of gas in the back. I sometimes smoke in the cab while I'm driving so thank Christ I didn't light a fag...... Now I never leave the gas bottle in the stove when I'm finished and always secure everything before driving.

    • @linz_in_NZ
      @linz_in_NZ Před rokem

      @@SirRob7 That's more user error, than an issue with the gas stove itself. As it can't happen if its secure and in its box. The one I have will only fit in the box if the lever is up and the trivet inverted, then the lever can't be depressed to activate the bottle. Mine is secured in its box with a bungy cord in its spot in the kitchen cabinet for travelling. As you say, secure everything before driving, and its all good.

    Hi Mel great channel . :)
    I've recently run some heater ducting from the diesel heater to the cab .
    And it's the best thing I've done yet as something even on low it can get to hot in the back having some heat going to the cab helps where if necessary you can crack the Windows a little .
    But the best thing is 0 condensation 0 moisture and 0 ice or frost on cold days plus a nice warm cab 1st thing and no time waisted defrosting Windows if the heater has been on over night .
    Just a thought as you are having problems with condensation and electrics my outlet is next to the driver's seat blowing forward with a closeable vent should I send all the heat going back .

I think if you can cook with electric it’s definitely better than gas but there’s no getting away from the convenience of using gas maybe good to have the choice of the two. Great topic for a video 👍🤗🤓👍

    • @linz_in_NZ
      @linz_in_NZ Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Pauline, I'd buy a portable Induction hob, much more efficient than the old (solid) hotplates for around the same price. Mine will boil the kettle in the same time as the electric jug at home! plus it cools down and can be put away quickly too. With an induction hob and an Airfryer or Instantpot you can cook a whole range of things. Just check the Wattage of them to make sure your Inverter has enough power to run them.

    Hi Mel, great video 👍
    Like that you've screwed down the hob pan support frame to the steel, stops it rattling about or potentially worse flying off in an accident.
    Also, you may want to use the spark generator on 12v, but the hob [NJ Domino-302S] comes with a 240v spark generator, so do you have it plugged into your inverter for it to work?
    I cracked open the hob, and replaced the spark generator with a 12v version. I used a Thetford Spinflo Spark ignition Generator 07000588. Works like a dream on 12v 🍳

    Hi Mel, I love your videos and you seem like a pretty sound fella! Quick one, do you know if the gas shutoff safety feature is 240V as well or is it purely mechanical? I wonder could I install a gas stove like that and bring no power to it and it would still work?

    I am planning to use my gas burner i also use for hiking as my cooking unit inside the van, which i would disassemble each time after cooking. That’s NOT normal. I would clean it out really carefully and bleach it. Leave it somewhere warm or in the house by a heat source (radiator) to really dry it all out.
      If this happens again I would recommend you dispose of it responsibly and buy a new one and maybe store it away when not in use wi the some charcoal bags or rice to absorb the moisture…just an idea x

    • @BigVanSmallWorld
      @BigVanSmallWorld  Před 2 lety

      Normally you would run flexible pipe from gas bottles to copper run the copper pipe as close as possible to the stove and then switch back to flexible orange pipe to the stove using the correct fittings hope this makes sense 👍

    Contentious question: what suggestions do you, Becky, and your viewers have to be excellent ambassadors for Vanlife that's mindful of the environment.? (as opposed to "filthy vanlifers" leaving bags of fecal matter & waste in dumpsters etc etc)
    #mindfulVanlife it's not a very sexy question, but as more people choose or are forced to find alternative accommodation.... It needs to be sustainable, and not a Mad Max subculture ;)

    if I dont want to watch I scroll forward. You even put up wording to tell you what you're talking about. Those camping stoves have a push down lever which pushes and connects the gas canister. If gas then starts to come out then bin it, as its not supposed to do this. I always knock the lever off when not using it, which then disconnects the gas canister

    • @1Polglen
      @1Polglen Před 2 lety

      My is the same I was surprised his canister burner released gas without the engage lever down and the gas knob turned.

    • @1Polglen
      @1Polglen Před 2 lety

      I have a camping stove in my camper as
      a) RV gas tops are a rediculous price in NZ.
      B) they have to be installed by a registered gas fitter and you need a yearly registration check up. This affects your WOF. And if you don't have a valid gas fitness certificate you don't pass your WOF. (I think the equivalent is your MOT?)
      This is the same if you have 250volt wiring or built in hook up. But I think the electrical certificate is every 4 years?
      Rules of a camping stove.
      It's not hooked up. And the gas cyclindar box is only opened when I'm cooking. It is turned off and disconnected at night. The connection hose rolled up and in the locked gas locker when the stove isn't in use. And yes my gas box has a drop out and passed the light test even though like all my build it looks a wee bit wonky. Hahaha.
