1. Define your expectations
He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, but disenrolled and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1997.
2. Stay true to your instincts
He formed a short-lived, two-man band called Lo-Fi Masters with Clay Cook in 1997.
3. Just do it!
After his appearance at the 2001 South by Southwest Festival, he was signed to Aware Records, and then Columbia Records.
4. Keep changing positively
His two full-length albums-Room for Squares and Heavier Things-did well commercially, achieving multi-platinum status.
5. Pick yourself up
In 2003, he won the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for the single "Your Body Is a Wonderland".
6. Start from zero
Though he started his career mainly performing acoustic rock, he began moving towards the blues genre.
7. Work on your thing
By 2005, he was collaborating with blues artists such as B. B. King, Buddy Guy, and Eric Clapton.
8. You're never going to do it seamlessly
He began touring as a solo artist in 2001. Mayer has toured North America, Europe and Australia with many musical groups.
9. Compromise
Mayer's fourth studio album, Battle Studies, debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart.
10. The Public is always smarter than you
Mayer was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone (#1020) in 2007. He was named as one of the "New Guitar Gods".

I love this! So many people seem to love to hate on John. (It's even rule #10!) And I get he has said some dumb things in magazine interviews. he's learned form his mistakes though. But as seen right here, he also has a wealth of good stuff to pass on. I like his music and get that he's in a weird celebrity status now due to his success and popularity. And he truly is a great guitar player. So gifted and good and tasteful. As Eric Clapton recently said "I don't think he knows how good he is, really!" There you have it. Go watch some Dead & Co. live clips and enjoy! John is playing awesome these days!

John Mayer, produces and writes, the type of music and lyrics, that bring about a feeling of, "we're kindred spirits...that guy & I..." (Smile) I hope that he'll continue, for a VERY LONG TIME, to bless us with his ingenious talent - intuition/intellect/gifting - his ability, to outwardly display the brilliance, of his melodious mind!! Number 7 is my personal favorite. It speaks to purposeful learning. You have to know who you are and what you want to do with your passion in order to direct the massive amount of information you acquire. This way, learning becomes an adventure. #9/10 Compromise/Public smarter. As truthful as it pains me to say it, I think artists have an ego that blurs their expectations of themselves. They might think, "Oh this work of art or this song just makes me burst into tears. The public must know of this." However, like John said, he is practical. He looks at the Top 20 Charts and manages to reconcile artistic creativity with 'pop-hits'. To gear your mindset into thinking that's a skill, rather than compromise, is truly a wisdom-milestone to achieve.

I'm a singer songwriter and I agree x1000 BUT Ive played Come Back to Bed at gigs before and it goes over like a fart in church. Daughters makes everyone (read all the women) sway and sing the song. Johns a smart man.

+Ethan S still doesn't make sense though right. Come Back to Bed has "I survive on the breath you are finished with" and "dont leave me 98 degrees of separation from ya baby" in it. GENIUS songwriting. I find daughters corny and lame and so did John.
Rob Miller Sometimes corny just works. I feel like Come Back To Bed is amazing but it took me a few listens to really appreciate it. Daughters is instantly accessible and that's what a mainstream audience wants, for better or for worse.

Some comments seen to note that our guitar god has not been a social success at times. Well, may I suggest that just maybe, when most of us were out socializing and learning the ropes, the guitar god was working on music in some dark dank studio or cellar. Oh wait, I forgot he was rich, forget that dark dank stuff. But anyway, he was working on music. This didn't come easy. I don't care how gifted you may be, you have to work hard to be this good.
Now, in sharing his music prowess with us, even the haters who do so because of jealousy in most all cases, try showing some understanding on those social missteps. Somehow, I thought this would have been painfully obvious. But my ignorance proves me wrong again.

He's wrong about the public being smarter than the artist. Artists have to dumb down the music to make it digestible for the masses. Thats why songs like gangam style and what does the fox say" have billions of hits and coltraine and miles have thousands.

I agree on many things, but there are some that I absolutely disagree with. When he talks about how you should change your music for it to become more popular, it just makes me a bit angry. Of course, getting the song to be under 4 min and all the other things he mentioned will probably make it more popular, but that just starts to sound like MTV's artists approach to music - that their music is product first, then music, which to me seems kind of disgusting. That's why the term "music" is so fucking broad nowadays. Look at Iggy Azalela and then at, say John Frusciante. It's hard to believe that they both can be referred to with the same word. My personal opinion is that if you want to make MUSIC in the deepest of its meanings - then you have to forget eveything about how long should it be etc., just make it as whatever feels right for you. If you want to make product - think what is going to become popular and then make your limited music based on that.
You're right. But i think it's exactly why he made 'define your expectations' #1 on his list. For uniquely talented and evo-driven professionals like John...high-volume-recognition, admiration, and validation are paramount.
