  • The Single Corner is arguably the most popular checkers opening to play, and for good reason. It's well-balanced, has a tremendous amount of scope, and is usually how most players are introduced to the game.
In this video, I focus on the Maize line within the Single Corner opening. It's a solid variation that has been around for more than 100 years, yet is not seen as much in either online or professional play. There is a lot of interesting play within the Maize line, so I recommend trying it out in your own games -- you may enjoy it!

Thanks for putting the board with the numbers on it in the video. I’m still learning. 👍

You got it -- I'll try to always include a numbered board in my bird's-eye view videos. Hopefully you have found this channel to be helpful in your games!

Thank you for mentioning my channel WinningCheckers. An alternative play at 7.19, red can also pitch 14-18 and get a triple shot, but after white jumps 10-3, it ends up as an even trade and a draw.

Of course! I know you specialize in unrestricted play, and always happy to recommend your channel. You are correct in 14-18 and the resulting 3x3 will clean up the position easily. What's nice about 11-15 (instead of 14-18) is it invites white to advance toward the king row with 10-6, which will lose after 15-18, 22x15, 7-11 and red will win.

That was fun! I’ve always played the maize move not knowing it was sound , but have proceed to lose numerous games. Awesome video. Can you cover more esoteric lines like this ?

Thanks, Thomas! That's really great to hear, and hopefully you can win some games with the Maize line going forward. The 17-14 line as I show in this video is not included in Basic Checkers. Richard Fortman covers the 17-13 line, which is probably more common.

I forced my checkers engine I’ve been making to play these boards and was super happy to see it play the same moves you where continuing with, it did chose some other moves a few times but given its looking 25 moves out it must be another promising line

Really cool, and thank you for sharing! The Maize line is probably secondary to the usual 17-13 line (instead of 17-14). But it sounds like you are developing a strong program! Are you familiar with Ed Gilbert and his Kingsrow engine? He may be able to provide any guidance / share any advice as it pertains to building engines.

@@azcheckers I do believe it’s first choice was the main 17-13 I had to start it after that move. Yes I have been using Kingsrow as a ground truth to tune the evaluation function it was been a very useful tool!

Hi Ryan, seems my last post isn't there maybe I didn't press send. Happy Friday! 😊 Hope you are well and enjoy the prospective of the upcoming weekend as much as I do. I'm trying to play more often on PlayOk. Maybe you have the chance to look at one of my games (exb) and give some advices. That'll be a great way to improve my game. The last one was bad, but that's because of the short time, which I recognized too late. Lately I made some great moves, thanks to your advices 😊 Have a great weekend. Bye, Joachim

Hello my friend, and a very happy Friday to you and hope you can enjoy the weekend ahead! I did check out some of your games from Playok, and I am very impressed to see you deploy many great tactical combinations. I took note of several 2 for 1s and saw you win many games recently. I have noticed the Single Corner opening is played quite a bit, so I may have to cover that opening more, and especially the variation you like to play (I noticed the early 9-14 exchange). I am really happy to see your progression -- keep up the great work!

Boy a lot of moves in this line made me cringe lol., like it was so far from what I would have naturally gone for it isn't even funny. Very tricky wow.
