Analyzing an underrated Double Corner landing
In today's video, I cover an underrated and overlooked landing most commonly seen in the Double Corner opening. It can also arise from a number of different openings, but I've never felt it received the attention is deserves compared to other major and notable landings. It has been played in important events (1949 world championship and 2003 U.S. National, for example), and there is a fair amount of published play dedicated to it.
There is also a large amount of scope, allowing for both open and closed positions. As always, I recommend playing out the sequences on your own board. I talk through one of the more popular and tradition lines of play, with many of the moves being interchangeable.

The Slip Cross: a departure from a traditional opening
zhlédnutí 3,5KPřed 10 měsíci
The Slip Cross is a fun and unique checkers opening that unfortunately is seldom seen at the highest levels in the modern game. Although the white side has an advantage, there are still plenty of tricks and traps that red can set. Winning opportunities are at play for both sides, and seeing some of the positions and tactics in this video might encourage you to try this opening in your own games...
Games that motivated me to study checkers (2002 U.S. National)
zhlédnutí 745Před 10 měsíci
Studying checkers published play can seem like a daunting task, and despite access to books online, without any guidance can leave players feeling frustrated and lost. I was in this same position back in 2002. I only had two books in my checkers library, but I also had something else that ended up helping me tremendously: Games from the 2002 U.S. National, which also happened to be the first to...
How to read published play: a helpful guide to studying checkers
zhlédnutí 3,8KPřed 10 měsíci
For many players, studying checkers can seem like learning a new language. There are columns of text, notes and variations, and it can be difficult and frustrating to follow. In this video, I discuss how to read the published play in the following three books: Lees' Guide to the Game of Draughts, Basic Checkers, and Solid Checkers. These three books are classics and are must-haves for any serio...

The openings covered in this video are: The Bronx Express: 9-14, 22-18, 5-9, 18-15; 15-19 Exchange: (9-14, 22-17, 11-15, 25-22, 15-19); 9-14, 23-19, 11-16, 19-15.
An Old 14th variation that leads to a fantastic finish!
zhlédnutí 3,6KPřed 11 měsíci
One of the most popular openings in checkers, the Old 14th, is full of many fascinating variations. The particular line showcased in today's video was a favorite of chess icon Irving Chernev. He remarked in his book, "The Compleat Draughts Player," that it's this variation he shows to chess players to demonstrate the beauty of checkers. It's truly a remarkable game that can be appreciated and e...
A spectacular combination in the Bristol opening (11-16, 24-20, 16-19)
zhlédnutí 4KPřed 11 měsíci
The Bristol opening in checkers is full of tricks and traps, and the specific variation in this video lends itself to some exciting cross-board games. The ensuing play is considerably complicated, so please do not be discouraged if you are unable to spot any of the tactical sequences. As always, I recommend playing out all of the moves on your own board to help with your overall visualization.
Wyllie's Invincible: a winning formula for a losing move

Most professional checkers players do not play weak or losing moves and expect a positive result. The legendary James Wyllie, however, would often confuse his opponents with unusual moves that sometimes were weak and / or losing. But he got results and his status around the world grew as a pioneer and grandmaster in the game. One of Wyllie's many innovations came in the Second Double Corner ope...
The Laird and Lady opening: tricky and trappy, but balanced

I would like you to have numbers on your board. Just a little more help for us struggling newbies.
Where can I get such board and pawn
Can you have multiple kings?
What is the name of this board?
Thanks dude😎😎😎😎😎
Can a king move in any direction or does it have to jump one to move in any direction
I'm 14 years late but am ready to clap my dad.
The second one is kinda wrong because you are forced to eat the double first so the triple in the end is impossible 😭
Thanks a lot for this! I love playing chess but now I'm really into the world of checkers. I'm your new subscriber from Mexico. By the way, where could I find official rules for checkers?? I have seen there are a lot of variants...International Checkers, American Checkers, etc. Thanks again and way to go with your CZcams channel!

Hey Ryans show the video for the draw finisher for Roberts Martins you showed only for the win if wrong played from the king side and was a trap for triple and was 3 to 3 leaving the opponent out of time to take one giving a victory. PLEASE I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE DRAW NOW😊🤝

its very helpful, but isnt it prio kill if its double? i mean if its more than the other way
Good job🤝💯💯
enjoy your tutorials, but when you jump and grab the pieces so quickly I have to keep pausing it. Please slow down a bit. Thanks.
I play with a man who don't start like that, so it is difficult to trap him.
at 6:22, how did not white jump with king ? Is not jumping mandatory?
How I Play we do mandatory moves I realized in the last part the king didn't take the mandatory jump
cool
I am 88 years. You move so quickly I miss what you do. I would like a site where i can practise moves online. Is there one ?

Can the best human players consistently beat the strongest computer programs for checkers?
Hm, this is quite different from what we play here. The accepted variant anyone would play here is that all pieces can jump both forward and backward as well as the "king" can move like a chess bishop. Though most of time it ends in a zugzwang of whoever blows up their position at key points. The video is interesting but unfortunately it wouldn't make sense for me to start playing this quite exotic variation.
on a board with 64 fields you only play on 32 fields, what nonsense
What type of checkers are these? Russian, english, which one?
Seems he got outplayed.
If my opponent misses a jump, then I can take his piece for not jumping. Is that correct? And when I do take his piece for not jumping is it still my turn
Love your videos
My mom she just bought me checker today and you're the day saver !
Can you jump your opponent 6 times in one turn?
