- In this video, we play with long exposures using rear curtain sync. It's not as difficult as you might think. Follow along in this lighting portrait tutorial that we photographed recently in our studio.
Using rear curtain sync can help you achieve a very unique looking fashion portrait style for your images.
In this step-by-step lighting tutorial I show you how we did it and what off camera flash lighting we used to achieve the final look.
For this shoot, we used the FJ200 from Westcott lighting for the flash photography and the Nanlite PavoTube 6c II for the continuous light photography which is what creates the blur effect.

I have sat here for the last hour watching different videos on RCS photography but your video here was the easiest and most concise one YET. The light finally went on over my head after watching this. Thanks. Now I need to give this a try.
Thanks - I used this for my granddaughter and her bf's senior photos. I am having fun with this.
Awesome job! And this technique is so fun to play with!! Loved her 2nd spin where you told her to end by looking at the light.....perfect!
Thanks so much! 😊
Thanks Sal! I usually shot pretty normal (sometimes boring) stuff. I've been wanting to add techniques like this. Keep 'em coming....
glad you enjoyed and expermient for sure.
very nice explanation of the technique.very useful
TY SO MUCH!!
Amazing!!! The photos are fantastic and the model is out of this world. Beautiful.
Thank you so much 😀
Top Model, Top Pictures!
mate u read my mind i love this style thanks mate
Ty so much. This was fun for us for sure. Will keep playing w this.
Nice shots Sal. I love Rear Curtain Sync. I use it all the time for dancing at Bar Mitzvah's and Weddings and it looks kick ass. Gives movement to a still image. Love your videos. Thanks.
TY so much! really appreciate that.
very useful video
Super dope!! Thanks Sal.
Another AWESOME one!
Thanks again!
Ill have to try and practice this. These photos would be great for Halloween ghostly pictures.
give it a try - you will have a bast!
Gotta try this!
yes!! get at it.
This is a dope concept, great work
Appreciate it!
I really need to try the Rear Curtain Sync out now that you have "lit" the way!
lol i see what you did there!
I love that
Ty ty
From Philippines thank you so much
Excellent explanation ❤
I would give this two thumbs up, but the second thumbs up would cancel out the first thumbs up. Great video!
Wow, thanks!
One of those tricks non photographers are amazed by but rarely has any practical use
Since I shoot 95% action with dancers this is something to think about. Thanks Sal
Yes! You definitely NEED to use rear curtain. You’ve probably wondered why your dancers seem to be moving backwards in some of your photos. This is why. 😉
@@renardmcghee637 Thanks but I shoot with available light only with dancers. I do not have strobes mounted above eye level.
Wonderful video! Love the "Vintage wall" backdrop, would you please share the vendor for that one? thank you
Good Morning Sal, I’ve been trying for years to get rear curtain sync to work. You have cleared it up the process a bit. I have aD500 Nikon. I do mostly outdoor and sports photos: birds, hockey, music concerts, marching band(bagpipes bands) almost exclusively day time lighting and a flash. I have yet to get rear curtain going. Any suggestions will be most welcome?
thanks for watching my man! i would say... the best way to get started is to just start playing with it. if the video helped you understand the basic mechanics of it - the rest is experimentation. ESPECIALLY IN SPORTS!!! This would look amazing for sure.
Can you make a video on how to setup rear curtain sync on a canon r7 with a trigger xpro c and godox tt685
Quick question: do you set the second curtain sync on the flash, the camera, the transmitter or all three?
i set it on the trigger. that tells the lights what to do.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I would have thought that the camera should be on a tripod. The movement effect to come from the model. Doesn't a two second delay lead to camera shake? Great Video.
I'm sure you get some shake during the movement. But the flash will freeze your model in place so she will be sharp.
normally you would... but this really drives the point home how the flash FREEZES the action. start playing with it.
I have a canon R6 with a profoto trigger and using profoto lights. I am unable to get the rear curtain sync to work. The 1st curtain will go (create shutter drag images) but it will not delay and activate the 2nd or rear curtain. Am I crazy or is this not possible to do with this system?
no. you can do it on that system... the key will be figuring out how to put the camera and flash system in rear curtain. profoto 100% supports this.
@@SalCincotta1 the trigger is set for 2nd sync and my camera shows that in the settings as well- I believe all is correct. I am reading that canon only supports a speed light on the hot shoe to trigger. This is a part of an article I found..."Some makers, such as Canon, require a smart flash to be in the hot shoe and turned on to even be able to set second curtain sync". Kinda wanna pull my hair out.
@@andreacostrinoco.9386crap i wish i could better assist... without having it in front of me almost impossible. ive done this with profoto and westcott - no issue. so its gotta be something small... but i have no idea what it could be.
@@SalCincotta1 back in the studio today to problem solve. Hopefully I have good news after today!
