That's panning not shutter drag. Shutter drag is simply using a slow shutter in low light conditions to pull in the background ambient light while the flash freezes the main subject. I also suggest using rear sync mode if your camera has the ability.
Hope you don't mind some advice, but here's what I suggest to improve your odds of getting a good shot:
1) Shoot horizontally. Your camera's resolution is high enough that you can crop it into a vertical image. Verticals hurt the composition, though, because the motion is what will direct the viewer's eyes across the photo.
2) Expose for your subject. Since you have someone who can repeat the movement, have them stand where the shot will be and set your exposure manually to their face. This means walking up to them and taking a reading up close. Doesn't matter if your lens can't focus, you just want the meter reading.
3) Can't shoot too fast, but also can't shoot too slow. With 1/15th of a second, you'll get more blurry shots than you will sharp ones. Stay around 1/60th for your shutter speed and adjust your ISO to match. Light is traveling through your lens to get to the sensor. Even though you think you're holding the camera steady, the subtle changes in your and movement of your torso means that light is going to bounce all over the sensor.
4)
I learned this technique in my basic photography course in Singapore. It is called panning shots and it is definitely not underrated. Manual focus, ensure your focus point is set. Recommend using a tripod as well for extra stability. PS: you really do not need to take 400 shots in burst fire mode. :) Move your camera at the same speed as your subject and only fire the shutter once your subject is parallel with your camera. It takes one shot only. Keep practicing though as it is a fun way to create interesting images both during day and night and most importantly, keep creating awesome content guys. You are doing great.
just wanted to say thank you for having the contest, not only did I have a lot of fun I learned a lot and it was really exciting, much love from Vancouver Canada!
This is called as a panning shot
I agree
Correct ,just a new hype with new name
@@Haydenssphotography shutter drag 😂😂😂😂
@@Opticalwander 😂😂😂I know
Exactly. But it 's marketing. Watch it take off now as all the hipsters call it shutter drag. Same thing happened when they started calling burritos...wraps. haha

Final shot looked great! WOW…that’s a lot of attempts (500 photos)…don’t know if I would be as patient. Nicely done…thanks for the tips. 👍👍👍
Thanks for the tutorial
Really love your work😊
Love from India ❤
I think if you had the camera on a tripod and just panned the camera, it might help with the vertical stability of the shots
What approximate aperture I will be shooting at night or during the day to pull this off! ? Wide open ? Stop down ?
ive seen this before but every time i see it i'm still impressed! also where is tommy i haven't seen him in a fat minute??
We do this with motorcycle riders. They love it.
User name checks out
Cool 😎😎😎
good video boys!
Nice video 👏
wait, where's the dragging part? didn't know panning and shutter drag are the same?
That is panning!
nice tuto but still some unclear topics. I am using a a7IV. If I understand, you are using manual focus, and i suppose manual exposure with SS=1/15sec and manual iso for good exposure. correct ?. you set focus in front of you but you seem to use high speed (Hi in drive mode ?) continuous shooting from left to right. correct ? Only one in front of you should be sharp.
How do you follow the bike/car and when do you press the shutter button ?
Shutter drag? Maybe panning?)))
Is that panning technique????
Here just to let you know that your gear links below are out of date! Keep up the good work dudes!!
its called panning its used in motor sport
It is just slow shutter panning... where does this "shutter drag" come from? Is that the new PC name for it?
I have never called this a “shutter drag”
That’s because shutter drag is something else.
On my way to round up friends to try this 😂
Love From INDIA...
ºits called a panning!
Shutter drag photos is one of my favorites! When you nail the shot they turn out o sick!
When is the editing challenge results coming out?

And there it is....the commercial for Sony. Good job, boy; how much did Sony pay you??
"panning shot" is the name a remember
I've tried panning car by my old SLR camera one of six photos turned out really good
I'm pretty sure this is called Panning.
I do it with my phone in normal mode and i can say i don't use continuous shutter still get the best photos. If u wanna see text me @click_the_shot_
I don't think shutter speed matters.
The last proper photo i shot in city was a panning photo 🥺
Not do it on planes that are 2000 feet away, going 160 mph, at 650mm, and 1/40ish. That’s what I do😂
Cool! Where can I see some of your work?

wtf thats a panningshot, shutter drag is when you use a flash to drag light at super slow shutter around a subject.. example someone dancing around light bulbs
didnt realize this video was posted long ago lol it just popped up.
Underrated?? I literally see so many CZcams photographers doing this. It's not as underrated as you may think. Good video though
ONE HEART' ❤️ FOR INDIAN
Yeah... This is panning. Dragging shutter is not the same thing.
That’s not shutter drag. That’s panning. Shutter drag involves long exposure with flash, like this ... m.czcams.com/video/e2jf5Knn0MY/video.html
You need to get your ‘old man’ techniques straight.
Second
I think I’m first
Hi
Lower the mic....boy
... or you just photoshop the effect 😂😂
took you 7 minutes to explain how to lower shutter speed
This is called panning, it was never called shutter drag and this is not an underrated photography technique.
