    Good Will Hunting (1997) - "I don't love you." 😢
    • Directed by: Gus Van Sant
    • Written by: Matt Damon & Ben Affleck
AcademyAward Winner for Best Original Screenplay 🏆📝
Initially, producer Harvey Weinstein did not want Minnie Driver at all for the role of Skylar, feeling she wasn't cute enough for the part. Because Gus, Matt, and Ben wanted her in the movie, Weinstein ultimately relented, and Driver went on to be nominated for a Best Actress in a Supporting Role Oscar.

This scene displays so well how fear of rejection can shackle a person down. Probably the strongest break up scene, at least in my book.

@@slothmanjay5029 Yes! I completely agree with everything you said. Abandonment was the word I was looking for. I was confusing the word with the Norwegian word, where they are to a degree interchangeable depending on the context.

just how fucked up a mind can get and be in denial just because they dont want to rellive that past trauma all over again by talking to someone about it

I’ve watched this scene a million times and It’s Minnie’s performance in particular that gets me choked up every time. Although Damon is obviously the aggressor driving the dialogue, yet the camera remains focused on Minnie because it’s credit to her mind-blowingly incredible emotional performance that makes this scene so powerful because Minnie makes sure we feel every bit of pain that she is feeling.
It almost seems insulting to call what she does in this scene as “acting”. It’s a short scene, but I can’t imagine there could possibly be a more realistic and genuine example of a dialogue between two conflicting characters in the history of cinema. 👏👏

So they basically improvised the whole scene with a general idea of where they were going. That's pretty neat!

No, they had a script and did some takes. With each take, the script evolved. The actors left out lines, put in lines. Also, the scene we see is likely comprised of several takes cut together.
Of course, some parts or reactions may or may not be improvised, but as you can see from the lines in the script, they stick to their lines for the most part. Not 100%, of course, but let's say, 60-70%.
Improvising the whole scene would be a different approach.
As far as I know, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon improvised dialogue while writing the script. They'd improvise a scene and then transcribe the parts they thought fitting into the script.
Then, while shooting, many directors and actors like to steer away from the script a bit to look for spontaneous reactions and interactions that feel more natural or unexpected.
If you want to see movies that are based in improv, I suggest Lars von Trier's "Idiots", Dumb and Dumber or Blair Witch Project.

If you believe that you wrote/write/will write a 'great scene/dialogue', be prepare ... Actors will smash your words into nothingnes, and waterdown it as must as they can, just to make your 'fony literature' something credible to themselves and the audiences ...
