Saltaire Volunteer Fire Company's Gamewell Diaphone Horn Test

- The 1210 test of SVFC's Gamewell Diaphone Horn. Apparently the third set of Quick Call II tones isn't rescue, but rather for horn activation as the relay tripped before the DTMF was complete (listen closely). Fair Harbor FD's Model 7t and 5 can be heard, along with a radio test dispatch at the end of the recording.

Scary. Sounds like a louder version of the horn in my elementary school that used to sound during civil defense drills. Still gives me a chill as I can vividly remember going out into the hallways crouching down facing the wall with hands and arms over my head wondering if it could really be an actual attack about to happen instead of a drill.
Our school's leftover civil defense horns were used as part of the class bell system after they weren't needed for duck and cover anymore (90s)
A school in my county has an air horn or something similar that goes off everyday as the school's bell system.
Time for Spongebob to get up

@@LARDLOGO Good morning, Krusty Krew!
Oh yeah his Fog horn alarm clock
Spongbob's alarm clock sounds more like a Swanson 400.
We had one of them on our fire department back in the pre 80's days. It was VERY loud and would peel Paint when fired off. I once heard it 30 miles away!
Thats not possible. Probably another dept's.
That means it would have to be louder than the Chrysler air raid siren to be heard 30 miles away. But the Chrysler air raid siren is the loudest warning device in the world and can only be heard 25 miles away. The official Chrysler air raid siren website states that the Chrysler air raid siren is significantly louder than any other horn or whistle. So this diaphone being heard 30 miles away is bogus. Sorry 😕
Yea....30 ...miles away...
Peel paint off the walls? Did you get that thing from Silent Hill?
@@ThunderboltSirenStudioslemme guess, you got that from AI. Some ship horns are louder than a Chrysler air raid siren and those are still warning devices. That claim is prb regarding a public safety warning device, not just a general warning device
This thing scared me even expecting it
Blacklight8001 lol me too
Same bro!
childhood memories of these in Queens, N.Y. We were playing near one when it went off. Never played there again, lol.
ProSkills216 where in Queens were these?
i think they are referring to the ones all the volunteer companies on Long Island use. since queens borders LI
Michael Patanella
Long Beach had a large one that could be heard 8 to 10 miles away on somedays. queens is a hop and a skip away from LB so I imagine you heard that thing from time to time
thats what I just said ?
Didnt mean for it to be a reply to you. Must have clicked on the wrong person when i hit reply. If you read Proskills comment than my own. It will make alot more sense in that way.
It scared the camera man :D
it scared the shit out of the camera man
Crazy Noah LOL
Don’t curse please
@@sirenmaster1735 what are u gonna do about it?
You cursed S word
Crazy Noah I recorded a vortex with no scanner and I was right under it LMAO
Damn, that's extremely strong! If I heard it in person, I'd be scared to death or my ears would explode!
The three Diaphones that Townsend, MA could be heard almost 10 miles north in Milford, NH (if you listened closely). Ashburnham, MA had them, along with Rockland, ME. The ones in Townsend were phased out in the early 1990's, the ones in Rockland were phased out in 2000, and the one in Ashburnham was phased out in 2006 (give or take 5 years..) All of which would make you jump when you least expected it. Most of them were tested at 8 a.m. and 6 pm.
Funny thing, I used go camping at Bald Mtn. Campground, and I never noticed it, but it is rather funny to think how much the towns are somewhat similar...lol!
I found a pair of diaphones in Peabody MA
We had them on each fire station in Falmouth Maine when I was a kid. If it wasn't the Diaphone it was something very similar. Coded honking for fire calls and also went off at noon and 5pm daily
Apparently in ye olde times, our station had one of these, when asked if we could replace our STH-10 with the horn, the chief said something along the lines of “oh hell no”.
Man, this old Type B sound pretty potent!
Sadly it has been replaced by a model 2 siren
I actually liked how that ACA siren sounds in the distance. Nobody does distant recordings.
Benjamin Fuller Read the description. its a 7AT.
Silly me, it had a similar ratio to most ACA sirens.
@@racer927it’s a model 7t and a model 5 according to the creator
Model 5T and 5
It’s a 10/12 Model 7T
it scared the crap outa me when it did the first blast (watching the video)
How WELL I know this horn and it is still the winner and champion in my book as it sounds better than most of them do these days and YES it IS extremely LOUD!!

The horn must scared the sirens making them cry (Attack mode)
LMAO! Camera operator jumped when this thing went off!
Where on gods green earth did this take place? That thing sounds badass as hell.
This is up in New York.
holy hell......that could be heard in the next state !!!
these used to terrify me as a kid and as a 31 year old still do!
0:10 - The Horn from HELL!!
Yep, they guy who filmed this jumped because of how loud it his.
And make sure to turn your volume down at 0:09
0:11
very healthy sounding gamewell diaphone
Lovely 7t ambiance too.
5T
Here it is actually in pretty good "voice" than I have heard it on other occasions. Sometimes the upper shift note sticks and becomes a single tone "shudder" probably due to valve problems
wow that loud also i hear some other sirens at the end
Imagine if that thing blew out the fire itself. So loud that it knocks the air molecules out.
Fire Island, Ocean Beach back in 1980, when that horn went off in the G-d hours of the night, you'd jump out of your skin, and when it was foggy, it's echo was scary.. peel me off the wall. lol
My ass after having Taco Bell for lunch
Duck: Qauck
Me: Hello Mr duck, do you want some bread?
Duck: Qauck! (Yes)
Me: Well you can't have any
Duck: 0:11
I want one. Two would be even better!
Now that is something that echoes!
0:10
The really long blasts may be due to an old Smith valve that might be "sticking" The 12:00 noon blast for this horn is nearly 5 and a half seconds long, one of the longest I have heard!!
Could be. I like the shorter 1/2 second blasts that are more set for fire. Also you hear the horn having dual tones in the first several blasts as the piston is being slammed by air. As the pressure drops it goes to a steady tone.
Where in Saltaire are these horns located??
Sounds badass as hell.
No need to come save me y'all, the sound of that already killed me 😰☠️
i like how it acts like a siren. even tho it’s not
I thought the federal signal model sirens were a ACA storm model for a minute at the end.
I think I found the worlds largest party horn. Nice video!
Also it would make a great civil defense alarm as well that diaphone horn is louder than the siren itself
Fire Island, Ocean Beach in the 70's and 80's was using a horn like this.. I was right down the block from the fire house, Denhoff Street.. one time it was a very foggy night, and the damn thing went off,, they had to peel me off then ceiling.. so scary that horn
Actually there were TWO versions of the Ocean Beach diaphone the first one being the most horrible and scary of them all. It was a lower tone with a brass piston that had a shift wobble and sickening grunt at the end. This was when the old firehouse was on the corner of
Bayberry and the Midway. It sounded like an angry adult with a microphone scraping a balloon and the initial grace note was similar to this Saltair one. It took three tanks to blow this horn which had a 6 mile coverage and could be heard in the Pines.
The second version was a high toned one with an aluminum piston and less unpleasant. and a new fire house was built on the Midway and Ocean Breeze where it stands now. There is now a regular Sentry siren instead and has been there since 2001.
Dude this loud boi scared the heck out of the Model 5 and 7t that they decided to wail in fear
Jesus that jumpscare. I first was confused, thinking this was a video of the firefighters having some fun with the siren, playing some stylophone-esque tones, and then it suddenly explodes.
Grew up on Long Island near the Lawrence-Cedarhurst FD back in the 70's and 80's listening to one of these, the blasts were a little shorter than the ones in this video but holy hell, if you were standing on the other side of Central Ave across from the firehouse went it went off......you were gonna drop your ice cream, guaranteed. There was no warning at all, just nothing and then......BAMM!
I have been searching for someone's recording of the LCFD horn for years and haven't found it. Would love to hear it again if anyone has it
Most effective sirens out there
Gamewell Diaphone, and there is a Model 5 and Model 7t in the background at the end.
That vid was published on my birthday!!!!
Nice video pendymouse!
Yep, Model 7T and 5
Why did it sound single tone at the start and when it came back it sounded more dual tone
Thats the 7t your hearing the t stand for two tone.
That horn would make a good tornado alarm wouldn't need a whole Army of them you just need one just by how loud it is
That Diaphone completely made you jumped a half a mile and scared the Birds away . Saltaires Diaphone is the winner is sounded like stucked tugboat with a type B Because company2 Diaphone in NewMilford Nj has 2 tones
I live in connecticut and the city that I lived in had 3 of these horns mounted on their main fire station. They sure got your attention when they went off.Now the horns are no longer there as all of the firemen have pagers or cell phones so the horns were no longer needed.
@2010seamus Nope, that was the Quik-Call II pager tones used to activate the pagers of department members, and trip the relay for the horn.
That thing is so damn loud
Don’t curse
need a pair of them as car horns, perhaps people would pull their heads out their rear ends and pay attention :))
I'd save it for someone texting while driving.
How come the first 2-3 blasts have a pitch shift and then aferwards it's just a single tone.
When spongebob gets a new horn
😂the moment it scared you was extremely funny 😂
damn that is loud!
holy moly .. let's start a fund to get them a thunderbolt
Man! That echo!
how loud are these?
Do these diaphone horns use drivers? Or compressed air?
Compressed air
What is the siren in the background
love the echo!

My town has one of these and a model 5 that used to go off but they stopped that in 2005
Where was this angle filmed from?
HOW LOUD ARE THOSE THINGS? Like seriously what is the range on that thing?

Flippin epic
i wonder how many decibels it is when it sounds

@@Davesand2003 that's not possible lmao
@TurgeonFan77132 Probably a sticky valve or weak compressor. They've been repairing it for a while now.
Anybody want to bring one of these to the truck convoy?
New Milford NJ by Company 2 Diaphone has Type B and High pitched so it's both High and low and it's loud trust me I've herd it all the time when I'm home in New Milford NJ
Step aside Chrysler Air Raid Siren, there’s a new loud horn in town
Which street is this Gamewell Diaphone located on?
One time I found some diaphones in Peabody MA
Who pissed off the goose?
In the background I heard either an ACA Allertor, Model 5, or Model 7.
+AwesomeFireFan It's a 5T czcams.com/video/N4d41fjHTd8/video.html

Federal 7T and Model 5
wtf whtis that for a siren it works with compressed air right
funny when it starts u jump lol
What kinda fire whistle is that
Sounds like an SD-10 in the background?

Diaphone scared Allertor into howling!
Model 5T
What street did you get this on
Made the cameraman jump too! What's it like compared to sirens?
Louder than many, actually.
@OWS of the South Not sure, actually. But, I am decently sure that they are decently loud, and also a little more startling.
Was that a ACA Allertor in the background?
Yay
QUAAAAAACK!!! QUAAAAAAACK!!!!
I also hear an Allertor and a Model 5
Trains and Sirens thank yoou
@CL137626 You are correct, you hear both a Federal Model 5 and a Federal Model 7T. See my other videos for them :)
yeah and my 4 year old thought it was hysterical!!
