  • The Holy Eucharist: Rite II on The Seventh Sunday of Easter, May 12, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Reverend Cameron J. Soulis, Associate Rector, was the preacher. Assisting: The Reverend Jonathon W. Jensen, Rector, The Reverend Leslie G. Reimer, The Reverend Geoffrey S. Royce, Deacon, Alan Lewis, Director of Music, Jon Tyillian, Assistant Organist.
Musical Notes: Falling as it does between Ascension Day (last Thursday) and the Feast of Pentecost (next Sunday), the Seventh Sunday of Easter has a distinctive if transitional character in the church’s liturgical year. In part, it looks back, with a Collect very much rooted in Ascension-thinking; the readings, rather, seem to look forward to what is to come with the Descent of the Spirit and the carrying forth of the Messiah’s teaching and fellowship.
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) was one of the greatest musical figures of his generation in England. Though professedly agnostic, he contributed enormously to the music of the Church in the twentieth century, both through a lifetime of composition for choirs, and through his musical editorship of one of the great monuments of English hymnody, The English Hymnal, first published in 1906. He was also a dedicated collector and preserver of folk-songs, making field-research a frequent pastime and preserving for future generations (and for his own compositional use) traditional music from various corners of rural England.
