I know this is a whole year after you uploaded this video (totally subscribing btw) but this specific video has helped me so much in figuring out what I’m going to do. I love composing and performing and absolutely love learning about it, but also am interested in neuroscience (of all things) and I’ve been worried about the workload and future career decisions. What was the process in deciding to double major, and what were the factors that helped you decide? Thanks!💜 Amazing video-plus you’re super cool and I love the pieces I heard in this video!

Thank you so much for your kind comment! I’m so glad this video was helpful for you. I actually know several music/neuroscience double majors.
Math and music were my favorite subjects in high school, and I couldn’t decide between which I wanted to study. So I didn’t! I also really enjoyed the classes I was taking in college, so I stuck with both majors even though the workload has been very heavy.

Hey, I saw that you're double majoring in STEM and music... I am very interested in doing something similar as a Biology/Music double major but am still on the fence, as I will be attending a very rigorous school for STEM in the fall of this year, UC Berkeley, and also do not know whether I specifically NEED a degree in music. I am also considering a music minor though, but fear that I won't receive the fulfillment and immersion into music that a major would provide. Seeing as how you attend a very well-ranking school, I assume the standards and workload are also very rigorous and you could give me some advice for the situation I am in? Thank you!

Congrats on getting into Berkeley! Once you start taking classes, you will start to get a good idea of how much you can handle and what you are most passionate about. As a freshman, I was also unsure of how much time I wanted to spend in each area. I recommend entering into the most rigorous combination of your two interests, which I think would be a double major in your case. This way, you’ll be able to figure out faster how much you enjoy each subject. It’s also easier to move into a less rigorous program than to move into a more rigorous program. Although, this is just what I would (and did) do. Some people would say that during your first semester in college, you should try to not overload yourself since the transition to college is very overwhelming for a lot of people as it is

@@TiaraTanka Thank you so much! Taking the most rigorous approach is definitely an interesting way to go about my situation and I will be sure to weigh it in with my other options once I start school :)

Biohazardous Waste Yes, definitely get other opinions! It worked for me bc originally I was in a more rigorous, 5 year program, but switched into the one I’m in now which is only 4 years. Good luck!

Parametric Maneuvers/Raw Chops with Jay. It might have a different name now and I think it’s only offered every other year

What are some books that are required in your classes? I want to get into composition. I know basic music theory. I know that books won’t really help with composition, but it won’t hurt to check them out!

There were several “textbooks” that were basically a bunch of scores. Those aren’t publicly available. We also studied from The Study of Counterpoint: From Johann Joseph Fux's Gradus Ad Parnassum, The Study of Orchestration by Samuel Adler, and Green and Jones. And then there were also the music history and aural skills textbooks that all music majors are required to get.
