As a puppet enthusiast dating a Muppet fanatic and besties with 2 other puppet enthusiasts, I now NEED this! I think people would love it! They could also do it as an end of day pickup thing where a puppet maker takes your picture and works on your look alike puppet during the day. But DIY would be so cool!

Apparently, a few weeks before D23, him and his team were told they’d be getting relocated sometime in the new year. In an interview at D23, Frank Oz expressed a clear optimism about the future of The Muppets, SPECIFICALLY because of "new leadership." I doubt he'd say that if he thought for a second his best friend's final project was gonna get bulldozed away. PLUS, lest we forget, the theater seats were JUST upgraded. We need to remember that Muppet Vision 3D is one of Jim Henson’s last projects before he died in 1990 so replacing it with the Monsters, Inc land would be very heartbreaking.
Plus Star Wars Launch Bay is housed in the former Magic of Disney Animation which opened in 1989 until it closed in 2004 and parts of the building is now mostly empty animation rooms so it would make absolutely sense to replace it with Monsters, Inc land.

When I worked at DHS I would hear 3 main complaints from guests, and this was constant: 1. “Why is Rock’n Rollercoaster down?” 2. “Why did they replace the Great Movie Ride?” and “Why is the Muppet store closed/where is muppet merchandise?”. The last being a very popular question from younger folks and especially from folks from the UK. I got it almost every other day. People want more Muppets, I think they would be making a huge mistake by axing the only Muppets related thing in the park, and a horrible act of disrespect to the Jim Henson company and Legacy. I know many people have mentioned it here, but it was Jim Henson’s last project before he passed, but I also want to mention that Muppets Courtyard was already a rolled back version of the promised Muppet land that was in the works when Henson was alive. After his death, the WD company did a lot of disrespectful things in regard to that agreement with Henson and permanently marred the two companies relationships over greed. So, this would seem like the most disrespectful act after all the WD company has put them through. Also, who on earth would want to get rid of both Muppet Vision and Mama Melroses? Seems like a poor choice to me.
Also, I’m not sure how bad it’s gotten recently but many of the buildings in animation courtyard have mold in them. Primarily the building used for The Little Mermaid and the previous Studio Store/Playhouse Disney Shop. Ive heard its so bad that it has to be gutted, so the smart idea would be to squish alot of those buildings, even though it would be sad for us Disney’s MGM Studios fans, but it would be way easier. Also the positioning of Harry Hausen’s in the concept art would fit nicely in the spot that the Playhouse Disney Dance party is in now, which used to be the Soundstage restaurant. Much of that infrastructure for the SSR is actually still there, it’s used primarily for food prep at the moment, but it would easy to push that kitchen staff elsewhere.
In conclusion, let’s hope that they make the more fan oriented/economical decision and leave Muppets be. Keeping my fingers crossed that my favorite attraction stays standing. 🤞

It wouldn’t be terrible IF the Muppets were moved to a more prominent location and, as you say, “plussed” with a new/additional show attraction:
    1. Move Muppets to Animation Courtyard and add a Muppet themed flat ride in the area (Studios)
    2. Muppets to Magic Kingdom in Hall of Presidents (Great Moments show and meet and greets with muppet characters in windows - not walk around)
    3. Muppets to EPCOT at Imagination Pavilion - bringing back Dreamfinder as a kind of Jim Henson type figure and keeping Figment (of course)

And as an aside, get rid of ALL the OLD ANIMATION STUDIOS office buildings inside the park. The animation studios are long gone. Is this a theme park or an office complex? KEEP Muppets and ADD a better Muppet experience where the giant boarded up gift shop sits. Put a dark ride in it for the littles and ADD a splash pad around the fountain. But do NOT remove MUPPETS for MONSTERS. Remove defunct animation studio office space and open up the backside of Sunset Blvd.

I agree that the main problem holding Hollywood Studios back is the fact that Disney is trying to shoehorn new lands into a park full of giant boxy soundstages. Disney needs to start planning NOW for the future, which means all new attractions built today need to be in places that won't get in the way of future expansion. Look at what Universal is doing with Epic Universe--every themed land is built in such a way that it could be completely demolished and replaced without affecting the rest of the park at all.

Plus removing a smaller attraction in a park that already has few attractions would seem stupid, legacy aside, because if we do consider legacy, thats Jim Henson's final works ever, and Disney still clearly cares about the Muppets IP considering the D+ show and the panel they just had at D23, and I've been seeing more muppet merch and muppets on social media as well.

You could look at how they handled the Galactic Starcruiser closure for some hints here, where they announced its closing very abruptly to make sure it was in line with the fiscal quarter, despite having ad plans and reservations booked beyond the closing date. This isn't the exact same scenario, but I think the fact that they announced that they were doing this Monsters Inc land without, apparently, knowing where it was going, to the point where they showed off concept art that implied two wildly different locations...sort of implies that they announced a bunch of projects for D23 with the idea that they'd "figure it out later."
Plenty of rides in theme park history get refurbed shortly before they shut down. Sometimes it's because in the process of doing the refurb, they find more expensive problems, and sometimes, someone at the top of the company just makes a call with very short notice. Also, the infrastructure concerns they're thinking of with the office might still be more expensive than eating the cost of the refurb.
Personally, it seems like a pretty obvious choice to keep the Muppets where they are (and give the area more love in the wake of this big public outcry) and put the Monsters Inc land where nobody really goes in the park, but Disney is going to...make the choices that make the most financial sense to them, whether or not it's always super great for the people who visit the parks.

I've already been confident from the beginning that it will be Animation Courtyard, but last night something hit me that made me even more sure: Mama Melrose (and to a lesser extent Pizza Rizzo). I think we all expect Harryhausen's, but I can't imagine them entirely changing the menu and retheming Mama Melrose. Maybe it could be quick service and replace Rizzo but either way I think Mama Melrose has to stay as is. Meanwhile Animation Courtyard doesn't have a restaurant, and if they build out using the space behind and around the Launch Bay there's easily space for it there, and that's adding another dining option rather than just retheming existing ones.

Great video, as always. I think there is a potential great spot for Monstroplis that hasn't been discussed much. If you go past Star Tours and Backlot Express where parades end, there is a pretty big area back there. There are a couple of buildings there shown on Bing Maps as Cast Costuming and Cast Services and then a parking lot. If those labels are accurate, it seems to me like those cast services could be moved elsewhere and then build Monstropolis in that area taking some of the parking as well.

I half the time do not see what the land were Star Wars Lauch Bay is while everyone is diverted to Galexys Edge. Muppits is very good. I think the Monsters Ink ride would match very well to Disneys Animation Court Yard. It would help create more guests to the park and make the Animation Courtyard be almost like another land being built as its fairly empty for guests at present. It would be a big mistake to remove Muppits and put it were Hall of Presidents is as Walt Disney had a dream for Animal Kingdome around the history of presidents mainly President Lincon.

I was thinking they could relocate the Disney Junior show to the old Who Wants to be a Millionaire showbuilding. The inside would probably have to gutted and rethemed, but right now it’s just a waste of space. Then they’d have lots more space in animation courtyard. They could run the Little Mermaid show during construction and when the construction’s done they can retheme it to Monsters Inc. like you said, Jack. I’ve been waiting for you to come out with a commentary on this, because everybody else seems to just whine about it, but nobody else talks about the pros and cons like you do.

Animation academy makes a lot of sense. Behind the Launch Bay building, towards the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster building, is a cast parking lot. Part of that could be sacrificed to make room for the Monsters Inc ride building. That would open up room for a larger outdoor area for Monstropolis and maybe make room for a restaurant. Ok I figured it out. That solves everything. And for my background and insight… I used to work at the Drawn to Animation show back in 2005, and I remember seeing how the Animation tour used to work with the real artists houses in the attached office building. When I worked there the whole building was vacant and empty. Not sure if anyone ever moved in and since production has completely left the Studios I don’t think it is. So here’s my thought.
    1) return the animation tour to its former glory and showcase movie props and show the “art of animation” again. Knowing how popular the animation building at DCA is, this is a no brainer. And I know what you’re thinking… “That’s what One Man’s Dream is for.”And you’re right. Basically MOVE all of OMD to the animation building, putting the theater inside the massive vacant animation studio/office. Which then allows you to…
    2) Tear down/repurpose current OMD location (maybe even Little Mermaid) to act as the “gateway” to Monstropolis. Think Diagon Alley at USO.
    3) Use the massive parking structure as location for roller coaster show building as we know the sight lines for Toy Story Land cover that.
    4) Use the other part of office building as facade or shops for monstropolis.
    5) enjoy all that DHS has to offer with only taking out Star Wars Launch Bay and maybe VOTLM.
